Calls for Zohran Mamdani's deportation; Trump's border czar says 'game on'
Republicans and affiliated groups are seeking a federal investigation into the citizenship status of Zohran Mamdani, who won the Democratic primary for the New York City's mayoral post, with some calling for his denaturalisation and deportation. Mamdani, son of Indian-American filmmaker Mira Nair, found himself at the centre of a political firestorm following his primary win ahead of the November New York City's mayoral election.advertisementAnd amid calls for probe and deportation US President Donald Trump's border czar, Tom Homan issued a warning to Zohran Mamdani saying that immigration enforcement will "double down and triple down on sanctuary cities". Homan added that if immigration enforcement officials can't arrest people in jail, they would "find them" in neighborhoods or work sites, adding, "so game on, we're coming".Mamdani, who has been an assembly member since 2021, became an American citizen in 2018 shortly after graduating from college. He has also faced Islamophobic attacks due to his political views and stance on US foreign policy.
Tennessee Republican Congressman, Andy Ogles, has urged the federal government to revoke the US citizenship of New York City mayoral candidate Mamdani and initiate deportation proceedings against him.Ogles shared images of a letter he wrote to US Attorney General Pam Bondi, urging the Department of Justice to examine whether Mamdani's US citizenship should be revoked on the basis that he may have obtained it through "wilful misrepresentation or concealment of material support for terrorism".advertisementIn response to the Democratic primary poll outcome, the New York Young Republican Club, a Manhattan-based GOP group for members aged 18 to 40, issued a "call to action" on X. The group was founded in 1911."The radical Zohran Mamdani cannot be allowed to destroy our beloved city of New York," the club wrote in the post, tagging the White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller and Donald Trump's Border Czar Tom Homan. This comes days after the American President called Mamdani a "100% Communist Lunatic".The group urged President Donald Trump to invoke the Red Scare-era Communist Control Act to revoke Mamdani's citizenship and "promptly deport him".The Communist Control Act of 1954 is a Cold War-era law passed at the height of anti-communist hysteria. The law, which technically remains on the books, declared the Communist Party illegal and allowed for the stripping of rights of individuals deemed part of a communist organisation. The club also called on White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller and Trump Border Czar Tom Homan to take action against the 33-year-old Ugandan-American Democratic leader.Following Mamdani's victory, Miller claimed New York City is the "clearest warning yet of what happens to a society when it fails to control migration," The Independent reported.advertisement"The entire Democrat party is lining up behind the diehard socialist who wants to end all immigration enforcement and abolish the prison system entirely," he added.THERE WILL BE ANOTHER 9/11 IN NYC: FAR-RIGHT COMMENTATORFar-right commentator and political operative Laura Loomer, in a post on X, said that New York City would face "another 9/11" if Zohran Mamdani were to become mayor.New York City Council Member Vickie Paladino described Mamdani as a "known jihadist terrorist" and "communist" in a radio interview, calling for his deportation despite his American citizenship, according to a report in The Guardian.New York Representative Elise Stefanik, Trump's one-time pick for UN ambassador, sent fundraising emails branding Mamdani a "Hamas terrorist sympathiser" before the race was even called. The backlash intensified in conservative circles, with the American President's son, Donald Trump Jr reposting a message on social media. The post read, "I'm old enough to remember when New Yorkers endured 9/11 instead of voting for it", adding his own comment: "New York City has fallen".'NYC NOT AN AMERICAN CITY ANYMORE'Marjorie Taylor Greene, US Representative for Georgia's 14th congressional district since 2021, also joined in by sharing an AI-generated image of the Statue of Liberty covered in a burqa. The image depicts a digitally modified version of the Statue of Liberty, veiled in a black burqa.advertisementRight-wing commentator Matt Walsh decried New York's immigrant population, lamenting how New York isn't "an American city any more" because of its population being 40% foreign-born.The backlash was sparked by Mamdani's promises, his views on Israel, and support for the Palestinian cause.Mamdani, whose father is Ugandan academic Mahmood Mamdani, is married to Rama Duwaji, a Syrian-American artist. In Tuesday's heated Democratic primary election event, New York City Mayor Eric Adams slammed the 33-year-old, calling him a "snake oil salesman" following Mamdani's victory over former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who was seeking a political comeback.MAMDANI'S POLITICAL JOURNEY SO FARSince 2021, Mamdani has been representing Astoria, Queens, in the New York State Assembly. His victory in the mayoral primary indicates that his ideas are becoming more popular in the city. His campaign has plans, like establishing city-run grocery stores, freezing rent increases in rent-stabilised housing, and providing free city buses. These ideas would be funded by a $10 billion tax increase on businesses and wealthy residents, Mamdani said.advertisementMamdani has been vocal about international issues, especially regarding the Israel-Palestine conflict. His firm pro-Palestinian position has drawn sharp criticism from pro-Israel organisations. His supporters view him as a bold and much-needed progressive voice for New York City.Mamdani was born in Kampala, Uganda, to parents with roots in India. New Delhi: Minister of State for External Affairs Dr. L. Murugan receives 268 Indian nationals repatriated from Israel under Operation Sindhu upon their arrival in an IAF C-17 flight from Sharm-El-Sheikh, Egypt, in New Delhi. (Photo: IANS/X/@MEAIndia) New Delhi: A total of 4415 Indian nationals – 3597 from Iran and 818 from Israel – have been evacuated so far using 19 special evacuation flights during Operation Sindhu, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Friday. The evacuated Indian nationals included more than 1500 women and 500 children. The flights, including three C-17 aircraft of the Indian Air Force, also brought home 14 OCI card-holders, nine Nepali nationals, four Sri Lankan nationals and one Iranian spouse of an Indian national. As tensions escalated in West Asia, the government of India had launched Operation Sindhu on June 18 to evacuate Indian nationals from conflict zones in Iran and Israel. On June 17-18, Indian Missions in Tehran, Yerevan, and Ashgabat coordinated the evacuation of Indian nationals from Iran through land border crossings to Armenia and Turkmenistan. Special evacuation flights commenced on June 18 and facilitated the return of Indian nationals to New Delhi. The majority of evacuations were carried out through Mashhad, after Iran opened its airspace for evacuation flights under Operation Sindhu on June 20 on New Delhi's request. 'We thank the Government of Iran for this gesture. A total of 3597 Indian nationals — including students, workers, professionals, pilgrims and fishermen – from more than 15 Indian states – were brought back to India from Yerevan, Ashgabat and Mashhad from June 18-26 using 15 special evacuation flights,' the MEA stated. The Israel leg of Operation Sindhu commenced on June 23 with the Indian Missions in Tel Aviv, Ramallah, Amman and Cairo facilitating the movement of Indian nationals across land borders to Jordan and Egypt. A total of 818 Indian nationals were evacuated, including students, workers and professionals. They were evacuated from Amman and Sharm al Sheikh from June 22-25 using four evacuation flights, including three IAF C-17 aircraft. 'The Government of India is deeply committed to the safety and well-being of its citizens abroad. Under PM Narendra Modi's guidance, Operation Sindhu is another demonstration of this commitment. We thank the Governments of Iran, Israel, Jordan, Egypt, Armenia and Turkmenistan for their support during Operation Sindhu. Indian Missions will stay engaged with host Governments and the Indian community in Iran, Israel and the wider West Asia region,' read the statement issued by the MEA. It added that, in view of the re-opening of the airspace, evacuation operations were halted on June 25 and further actions will be taken based on the evolving situation in West Asia.

'Let's stand with Zohran': Bernie Sanders, Muslim members of Congress call out racist attacks against Mamdani
Muslim members of Congress called out the anti-Muslim, racist attacks on Zohran Mamdani. Rashida Tlaib, Ilhan Omar and other Muslim American members of Congress extended support for Zohran Mamdani as he came under a vicious attack after emerging as the winner of the Democratic primary of the New York mayor election after Andrew Cuomo conceded the election. Mamdani has been called 'little Muhammad', 'snake oil salesman' as the Republicans called for his deportation. Apart from the Muslim American members of Congress, Bernie Sanders issued a statement of support for Mamdani. "The vile, anti-Muslim, and racist smears from our colleagues on both sides of the aisle attacking Zohran Mamdani cannot be met with silence," the statement issued by Tlaib, Omar, Andre Carson and Lateefah Simon read. "These hateful, Islamophobic, and racist tropes have become so entrenched and normalized in our politics. We know these attacks all too well. At a time of increased violence against elected officials, we cannot allow the attacks on Zohran Mamdani to continue. They directly contribute to the ongoing dehumanization and violence against Muslim Americans. We unequivocally reject the normalization of anti-Muslim hate and fearmongering and call on elected leaders across our country to speak out," the statement read. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like If you have a mouse, play this game for 1 minute Navy Quest Undo Bernie Sanders said the establishment went into panic after Mandani won. "Billionaires are raising money against him; Trump is ranting; Islamophobes are on the loose. They know what we know: Candidates who stand boldly with the working class can win not only in NYC, but anywhere. Let's stand with Zohran," Bernie Sanders said. Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Harmeet Dhillon threatened to investigate Zohran Mamdani over his proposal to tax 'whiter neighborhoods' in NYC if he becomes the mayor. 'Racial discrimination is illegal in the United States – period. Full stop! The illegal discriminatory scheme described by Mamdani would violate federal constitutional and statutory norms, and might even violate New York law," Dhillon said on the Benny Johnson show. NYC elites hatch 'Stop Mamdani' plan New York City business owners met with incumbent mayor Eric Adams to hatch a plot to stop Mamdani's rise. The plan was around Adams becoming an independent mayor candidate and not a Democrat. Several business owners expressed concern about Mamdani's policy platform, especially his tax policies, and how they could impact their businesses going forward. Whitney Tilson, a former hedge fund manager, told the NYT that Mamdani is a "Trojan Horse" who is 'totally unqualified to be mayor of one of the world's largest, most complex cities. "
