Toyota is sticking with ICE and manuals indefinitely
Toyota already offers several choices when it comes to rowing your own gears. The GR86, Supra, the outside-the-US-only GR Yaris, and the GR Corolla hatchback all offer a six-speed manual transmission and fully rely on petrol power. The good news is that the brand will continue to favor fans of the manual transmission, at least for the foreseeable future.'There is still room to satisfy dyed in the wool performance car lovers,' said Sean Hanley in an interview with Australian outlet Carsales. Hanley is VP of Sales and Marketing for Toyota in the land Down Under, and he's sure there's still a thriving market for enthusiast-focused vehicles that rely on internal combustion and good ol' self-shifting fun.
'Combustion engines and manual transmissions will be around for a long, long time,' he says.
Hanley was specific in mentioning that it would be the brand's GR sub-brand that handles most of the heavy lifting here, which makes sense given the existing product line. We're not sure there's much clamoring for a manual Highlander, after all. He also highlighted a special Yaris M Concept that touted a mid-engine configuration, which has led some to deduce that the legendary MR2's return is as sure a thing as it has ever been.
While he was clearly aligning himself with traditional enthusiasts passionate about 'that snap, crackle and pop we all love so much," Hanley says the brand is far from discounting electrification entirely. He claims that engaging and performance focused EVs will 'no doubt' appear in the future, though no specifics were given past that. Hanley also stated that GR is considering expanding their performance parts catalog as another area to grow the brand.Hanley even gave a nod to hydrogen as the potential fuel of the enthusiast's future. He made a remark alluding to the fact that internal combustion engines could include hydrogen-fueled ones. Toyota and BMW are the two brands most frequently associated with hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (HFCV), but automakers like Hyundai and Honda have skin in the game, too.
His hydrogen sidebar is even more intriguing when you consider that Toyota has already paired a manual gearbox with a hydrogen burning mill. The fascinating GR Corolla H2 Concept is a competition race car sporting a converted liquid hydrogen fueling system. Liquid hydrogen is easier and quicker to pump than its gas form, but poses some unique challenges. Most of them revolve around storing and pumping something that only exists in conditions under -253 degrees Celsius (-423 Fahrenheit).
Rumors abound about the future of Toyota performance vehicles. From the ever-persistent allegations of a returning Celica to a joint project with Mazda and mythical MR2 successor, there's no shortage of speculation. The product roadmap is really anyone's guess, because Toyota certainly isn't saying anything specific. But as long as there's a manual transmission in it, we're happy to patiently – and eagerly – wait.

Toyota Tundra recall: Is Toyota's most expensive truck reliable or plagued with issues?
Recalls often cause car buyers to question the reliability of certain makes and models, especially mass recalls. No automaker is perfect, and some of the best-selling cars, trucks, and SUVs have been recalled for everything from infotainment issues to major mechanical issues. Toyota just recalled models of its only full-size truck, the Toyota Tundra. The Tundra is its largest truck and the Tundra Hybrid is its most expensive pickup, starting at $58,005. Toyota's recall extends to over 440,000 Tundra and Tundra Hybrid models with model years ranging from 2022-2025. Is Toyota's recent mass recall indicative of a major reliability issue with the Tundra, or is it business as usual in the auto industry? Drivers have their favorite car brands and preferences, but experts have made serious research efforts to determine which brands are the most reliable and the best for vehicle longevity. Toyota's luxury division Lexus ranked second for predicted reliability and Toyota ranked third, according to Consumer Reports member surveys. Automotive research company iSeeCars said, "Toyota has perhaps the best reputation for reliability due to its wide range of models that have performed well over the past few decades" in a research piece regarding the reliability of 2025 cars. A vehicle reliability study conducted by J.D. Power also found Toyota to be one of the top-three highest-ranked car brands. Numerous automotive publications and review experts place Toyota near the top of most reliable mass-market car brand lists. The pickup truck vehicle class is arguably the most capable vehicle class due to the typical body-on-frame design of trucks, ground clearance and the utility of their beds. Some of the best-selling trucks in America like the Ford F-150 are known for their toughness and versatility. The Tundra nameplate has a long history of reliability based on ratings and studies. A study of the vehicles most likely to last over 250,000 miles conducted by concluded that the Tundra has the highest percentage chance of lasting over 250,000 miles (36.6%). It was followed by four other Toyota models, making the top five vehicles most likely to last over 250,000 miles all Toyota models. While the Toyota Tundra nameplate is reliable, recent model years have been under scrutiny since the 2022 model year's redesign. Consumer Reports gave the 2022-2025 Tundra models low predicted reliability scores. The Tundra nameplate may be synonymous with reliability for many drivers, but recent model years could threaten its reputation if recalls and complaints continue to pile up. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) states that 443,444 Tundra and Tundra Hybrid model years could potentially have reverse lamp assemblies that may not "illuminate when the vehicle is operating in reverse". The estimated percentage of vehicles with the defect is 1%, according to the safety recall report. The report also states that "for the purpose of this report 1 means unknown" and clarifies that "not all vehicles in this range were sold in the U.S.". So, while a large number of Tundra models are being recalled, this recall is primarily a cautionary measure to avoid accidents, based on the findings of NHTSA's safety report. The Toyota 4Runner, Land Cruiser and Tacoma Turned Hell's Revenge Into a Piece of Cake
Three Toyota off-roaders vs. one challenging trail Despite being fairly new to off-roading, I was able to safely traverse all the obstacles and different terrains I encountered in all three Toyotas I drove. The Land Cruiser and the 4Runner TRD Off-Road Premium are the two vehicles that can be pitted directly against each other. Both vehicles are SUVs and ride on Toyota's TNGA-F platform with the same suspension setup and hybrid powertrain. I also drove the Tacoma TRD Pro, which bears many similarities to its siblings but in truck form. Hell's Revenge hits you with a stunning challenge right off the bat: a narrow uphill path — also called a fin — that welcomes you at the trailhead. From the parking lot, the hill looks intimidating, but once you initiate the climb, you instantly begin to enjoy the ride and appreciate your surroundings. Every obstacle we encountered shouldn't be taken lightly because the consequences can be severe. Soon after descending, we came across uneven ground with rocks and boulders on both sides and a narrow path that served as the ideal route to avoid damage. All three trucks put their suspension systems to work and wheeled through this without any fuss. As we kept motoring along, we came across boulders and steep hills we had to carefully climb to reach higher points and continue. The Toyotas once again got up and over with ease. The Land Cruiser's 32-degree approach angle came in handy in these instances because it avoided hitting most obstacles altogether. The 4Runner's significantly lower approach angle — 19 degrees — was noticeable as I tapped the front skid plate more than once. Departure angles on all three vehicles were sufficient, but one thing that irked me was the rear mud flaps on the Land Cruiser. Every single time we had a steep descent and came to flat ground, the mud flaps would make contact. Of course, those can be removed, and I highly suggest you do so if you plan on taking it off-roading. The Tacoma is longer than its SUV siblings, but it still managed to get through tight spaces and turns with the only issue being the trailer hitch that kept scraping on steep drops.

This Might Be the New Toyota FJ Cruiser
It's been almost two years since Toyota teased the shadowy silhouette of a small, boxy SUV during the Land Cruiser 250's debut. There have since been a handful of hints that the automaker is still developing that smaller off-roader, but now we potentially have our best look yet. This might be the new Toyota FJ Cruiser. The lone design image comes from a filing at the patent office in the Philippines . Toyota filed for the patent way back in January 2024, but Top Gear Philippines only recently stumbled upon the design. It looks very similar to the shadowy silhouette teased in 2023. The rear looks awkward from the provided angle, and the D-pillar appears massive compared to the rest of the vehicle, which would create equally huge blind spots. The rear bumper cladding also looks a bit too chunky at the back, but it does seem to have a spare tire mounted on the liftgate, alluding to its ruggedness. The vehicle looks plain in these patent images, admittedly, likely representing the base version. There are no fog lights and no roof racks. The wheels also look quite small for something supposedly suited for Moab. But the teaser (that we lightened in Photoshop) shows an appealing-looking addition to the Toyota lineup nonetheless. Shortly after Toyota teased its small off-roader, the automaker filed a trademark for the Land Cruiser FJ name . There's still a lot of mystery surrounding the vehicle, which is likely to borrow styling cues from the Compact Cruiser EV concept. However, a report suggested the SUV would feature gasoline and hybrid engines instead. All these hints will hopefully add up to something incredible. We don't doubt there's a market for a smaller off-roader with some of the kit and capability of the larger Land Cruiser .
