Oman to enforce mandatory Licensing for Logistics Sector from September 1
Muscat – In a move aimed at enhancing labour market regulation and boosting professional efficiency, the Ministry of Labour has announced that all designated professions in the logistics sector will require a Professional Practice License starting 1 September 2025.
The directive applies to both Omanis and expatriates working in the specified professions across various logistics-related fields. As per the announcement, no work permit will be issued or renewed after the implementation date unless the approved license is submitted.
License applications must be submitted electronically through the Sectoral Skills Unit's official platform for the logistics sector via https://lssu.ola.om/sign-up.
The Ministry has emphasized that establishments not complying with this mandate will face legal and administrative consequences, and that the decision is binding on all businesses and individuals operating in the Sultanate's logistics sector.
This step forms part of the Ministry's ongoing effort to ensure that professions are practiced according to approved standards and to strengthen the Sultanate's workforce capabilities.

SALALAH: Oman's Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning has unveiled plans for Future Salalah City, a landmark urban development project that will span over 7 million square metres and provide 12,000 housing units designed to accommodate around 60,000 people. Announcing the project during a field update in Dhofar, Ahmed al Kamyani, Director General of Lands at the Ministry, said the new city has been carefully planned to integrate with the natural landscape, particularly given its location along the scenic Al-Tawiyyah coastal strip, which includes sensitive ecological areas such as coastal lagoons (khors). 'The city is being developed according to high environmental and urban planning standards,' al Kamyani stated. Future Salalah City is part of the Ministry's broader strategic planning initiatives under Oman Vision 2040, with a focus on sustainable urbanisation, coastal protection, and economic diversification in the Dhofar Governorate.

Oman invites name suggestions for a unified app for EVs
To promote sustainable mobility in the Sultanate of Oman, the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology (MTCIT) has launched a public survey to select the name of the unified national application for charging electric vehicles. The application will be a unified national platform that includes all electric vehicle charging operators in the Sultanate, under the supervision of the Ministry. Its goals are to facilitate users' access to all charging services in the Sultanate through a single application. Integrate all operators under one umbrella for a seamless and unified experience. As the first hydrogen station in Oman was launched this year, MTCIT plans to replace government vehicles with electric ones. There are also plans to implement a green corridors project for trucks powered by hydrogen. Future expansion of the application will include Gulf countries within the framework of cooperation in the field of green mobility. The suggested names for the application are EVNet OM - (Electric Vehicle Network Oman), a technical and professional name that reflects the national identity and the unified charging network. NEVO - (National Electric Vehicles Oman) An official and abbreviated name that carries a national and electric connotation, EV-Go OM - (Electric Vehicle Go Oman) - a direct marketing name that reflects readiness and mobility, ECO - (Electric Charges Oman) - a combination of environmental and functional meanings and EV Connect OM - (Electric Vehicle Connect Oman) A name that expresses the connection between users and stations within a single network. The participants in the survey can give another name suggestion for an app, apart from indicating plans, whether they own an electric vehicle or have any plans to purchase one within the next year. It may be noted that MTCIT has launched and implemented initiatives and projects towards net-zero emissions in areas such as legislation, governance, investment, and pilot projects. Achievements have been made in the use of biofuels in public transport, enhancing the infrastructure for electric vehicle chargers with more than 150 chargers installed by the end of 2024, implementing smart systems to reduce emissions, launching pilot hydrogen-powered vehicles, and converting port equipment to electric power. The number of registered electric vehicles exceeded 1,500 in the Sultanate in 2024.

65% Omanis in private sector earn less than RO600
Muscat – Omani nationals employed in the government sector continue to earn significantly higher wages compared to their counterparts in the private sector, according to 2024 data from National Centre for Statistics and Information. Out of 740,877 Omanis insured in 2024, 392,011 work in the government and 348,866 are in the private sector. Despite this near-even split, a stark contrast emerges in wage distribution. The private sector has a heavy concentration of Omanis in the lowest wage brackets. A total of 138,632 private sector employees earn between RO325 and RO400 monthly, representing nearly 40% of all Omanis in the private sector. In contrast, 5,077 government employees fall within this bracket, which is 1.3% of all those employed in the government sector. The disparity persists across other low-income bands. A total of 47,713 private sector employees earn RO400-RO500, compared to 11,047 in government. In the RO500-RO600 bracket, 40,387 are in private jobs versus 30,090 in government. Combined, more than 65% Omanis in the private sector earn less than RO600, whereas less than 12% government employees fall into this category. At the higher end of the wage spectrum, the imbalance is reversed. In the RO2,000 to RO2,500 range, 4,987 are government compared to 7,797 private sector employees. Among those earning RO2,500 or more, 16,172 are in the private sector while 5,689 are in government. This suggests a narrowing gap at the very top but a broader divide across the lower and middle wage tiers. Gender disparities are also evident. Of the total 740,877 Omanis insured, 215,671 are women and 525,206 are men. Male employees dominate all income categories, especially the higher wage brackets. Sector-wise, Omanis in the private sector are spread across different fields. The construction sector employs the largest number of Omanis – 76,573 – followed by manufacturing (57,627), wholesale, retail trade and repair of vehicles (56,543), agriculture and fisheries (47,929), and transport and storage (47,428) making the top five sectors employing citizens. For expatriates, the construction sector is the largest employer (439,924), followed by wholesale, retail trade and repair of vehicles (277,247), those employed by households (272,542), manufacturing (183,134) and administrative and support services (134,275), making the top five sectors employing expatriate workers.
