Dauphin Island Causeway restoration project: What to know about phase 2
It aims to create safer roadways and natural habitats for marine life in Mobile Bay.

Erosion along State Highway 193 going into Dauphin Island is jeopardizing the road from being washed away. This can create a dangerous situation for residents when hurricanes strike.
The goal of the project is to help make it safer to travel to and from Dauphin Island for the tourists and the nearly 1,900 residents.
'This roadway we are standing next to is the only ingress and egress from Dauphin Island, so during a hurricane, it's the only way to get out,' Mobile County Deputy Environmental Services Director Matthew Jones said. 'This project will help protect that roadway.'
The plan includes restoring the marsh habitat between Bayfront Park and Cedar Point.
The 3.5 mile long project will be filled with 800,00 cubic yards of dredge material and will cover close to 100 football fields. It will also create a habitat for marine life.
'This shoreline has been steadily eroding over the years, and this project will restore the shoreline back to where it was in 1917,' Jones said. 'That breakwater that you see will provide protection that will help to prevent marsh that we are building from eroding in the future.'
Dauphin Island Mayor Jeff Collier said the work is a welcome sight for people on Dauphin Island.
'We've been supportive of this project from day one,' Collier said. 'And we applaud the different agencies and entities that came together to make it possible. And the benefits are going to be tremendous.'

The Causeway Shoreline Restoration Project is now in phase two and consists of putting piping in place to allow for the pumping of dredge material.
The entire project is set for completion by fall.

ALL ABOARD: Amtrak returns to Mobile after 20 years
MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — A homecoming 20 years in the making, as city and state leaders gathered in downtown Mobile Saturday to welcome Amtrak's special arrival. Amtrak's Mardi Gras Service, the first passenger train to return to the Port City in more than two decades, made its first run from New Orleans to Mobile. This historic launch was recognized the true Mardi Gras way — with music, bands, and plenty of celebration. 'It was a big celebration the entire way here,' Amtrak President Rodger Harris said. 'A couple of years ago, we were concerned that, you know, maybe we didn't have enough planned for these festivities, but it's been thousands and thousands of people everywhere we stopped,' Harris said regarding the big community turnout for Amtrak. 'First of all, they were really happy that the trains are back,' he said. 'But secondly, they're using this as an opportunity to celebrate in the community.' After the festivities in Mobile, News 5 got the chance to ride along on the return trip to New Orleans. All future riders will have the choice between Coach and Business class seats, with beautiful views of the Gulf Coast throughout the journey. The train makes four stops in Mississippi, with a full trip taking about three and a half to four hours. Tickets start at $15 each way for adults. Alabama Congressman Shomari Figures said he hopes to see the service continue to grow across the Gulf Coast. 'We want to first and foremost, make sure that this line is as successful as it can possibly be,' Figures said. 'Making sure we're supporting it as a community, making sure that we're doing what we can and support it federally.' 'Making sure that the cities, not just in Mobile, but every city that's impacted by this between here in New Orleans are doing their part,' Figures continued. Mobile welcomes tourists via Mardi Gras Amtrak line
UPDATE (7:15 p.m.): — Mobile saw the arrival of 137 new tourists on Monday morning as the Mardi Gras Amtrak line arrived for the first time in years. The passengers weren't just from New Orleans. 'I've come all the way down from Boston to ride this train,' Evan Bouwens said. Bruce Prehn and three of his friends traveled from Tallahassee. Hassaan Qazi, an Amtrak enthusiast, told News 5 about his trip and why he wanted to come down. 'I try to go to Amtrak inaugurals wherever they expand service,' Qazi said. 'I'm based out of New York City. I flew in specifically for this train, and I'm really, really excited to be here. This train has not been here for just under 20 years, and I'm really excited you folks are getting this train back.' Christine Fisher is also from the Northeast, where she rode trains often but had been missing the leisurely rides since moving to New Orleans. 'Since living in New Orleans, I've really been missing trains, so I jumped on the first chance to come out to Mobile, explore a little bit, and just make a day out of it.' Fisher then told News 5 her plans for the day. 'I'm going to hit at least one or two restaurants, a bar, walk around, and see downtown,' she said. 'I'm very excited to explore.' Tourists aren't the only ones who are excited. Small business owners are thrilled about the opportunity to see some new customers. 'I'm told we've got some guests right now that are inside Heroes having some lunch,' Heroes Sports Bar and Grill owner David Rasp said. 'I just think that any kind of movement and activity is going to bring about sales opportunities.' Tourists who arrive on the Amtrak may get to experience a few more Mobile attractions than those who drive to see the city. 'It forces you to get out on foot and maybe experience things that you might not have done normally,' Michael Dorie from Visit Mobile explained. Rasp agreed. 'This area [Downtown] has, besides bars and restaurants, we have some nice retailers. We have some great art galleries, we have bookstores, and we have retail. We have a lot for folks to do,' he explained. 'And I think you've got to get out of your vehicle and take a walk to experience that.' UPDATE (12:14 p.m.): The east-bound train that left New Orleans this morning arrived in Mobile just before noon. A cheering crowd of people, including members of Visit Mobile and local businesses, was there to greet people coming off the train. However, as you might be aware, an interim schedule was put in place while several infrastructure projects are under construction. While work to complete six Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements (CRISI) projects, bridge automation, and other work is ongoing, related delays may occur. As our CEO Joe Hinrichs noted earlier this year: 'Passenger service wouldn't be possible without the leadership of federal, state, and local partners. The collective effort reflects our ongoing focus on strengthening the communities that are part of our rail network and our workforce.' UPDATE (10:00 a.m.): In an email response to News 5, Amtrak Spokesperson Marc Magliari said the start/stop of the first Amtrak train was due to 'freight train interference.' Magliari also sent his comment to the CSX media team, and we're waiting on a response from them as well. UPDATE (7:03 a.m.): Amtrak's Mardi Gras line is on its way to New Orleans but not without some hiccups on the first day. The train started moving right on time at 6:30, but the cars barely cleared the platform before they came to a full stop. The train waited for a freight train to pass in the opposite direction and resumed travel after about 15 minutes. First day issues notwithstanding, people gathered well before dawn to get aboard. 'I watch a lot of Amtrak videos on YouTube, and this is the closest Amtrak that I've been to in 18 years. So why not?' said Harold Arnold from Pensacola. He said he was going to do one day round trip and return to Mobile late tonight. Others came from even farther away. Young YouTuber Evan Mueller travelled with his mom from Tampa yesterday to ride the train this morning. 'Content. I love content. And that's what I do. Except even though my upload schedule is a little bit terrible,' said Evan Mueller. ORIGINAL STORY: MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — It's all aboard Amtrak in Mobile today. The first regular trip of passenger rail service between Mobile and New Orleans leaves the port city this morning. It's something that's been talked about for 20 years and today's the first day of a new era. One of the good parts of the Mardi Gras line is that since the west-bound train starts in Mobile early in the morning, it's the stop that's most likely to leave on time. Saturday, Amtrak held a special trip between NOLA and Mobile to welcome the new train service. While today's train is likely to be packed, it remains to be seen if this has staying the excitement and the newness of the train wears off, will people still be drawn to it and use it? Today, there's hardly a question. It's a maiden trip for the new line's regular service. The train has four stops in Mississippi before reaching its destination in New Orleans.
