Camilla laments library closures in visit to Edinburgh community hub
Her words were echoed by celebrated Scottish crime writer Sir Ian Rankin, who praised the resources his local centre provided when he was growing up, saying: 'Without libraries I wouldn't be here.'

The Queen, who has a passion for reading and officially supports a number of literary organisations, also chatted to Gone Girl author Gillian Flynn, and told her: 'I'm very partial to crime novels.'
In an impromptu speech, she said her visit 'has just reinforced my belief in what wonderful places libraries are, literally from toddlers to pensioners – they manage to inspire a love of reading of books'.
She added: 'To actually see a new library like this… I wish a lot of other people would follow your example and open more libraries all over the country, because I think, sadly, a lot of them have been closing down.

'So to see something as wonderful as this being reopened is all to the credit to all of you who've made it happen.'
The BBC reported in September that more than 180 council-run libraries have either closed or been handed over to volunteer groups in the UK since 2016 after the corporation submitted freedom of information requests.
In contrast, City of Edinburgh Council has made a commitment to its 28 public libraries to continue developing the resources as thriving community spaces.
Sir Ian, famed for his series of Inspector Rebus books, is also Deputy Lieutenant of Edinburgh, and said following the royal visit: 'Libraries are an easy cut and I can understand why councils do it – it's an invisible cut, almost.
Camilla's visit also marked the launch of a five-year initiative by the Edinburgh International Book Festival in partnership with Edinburgh City Libraries (Lesley Martin/PA)
'But it's such a crucial thing – libraries are crucial for every generation, from the very beginning to the very end.'Sir Ian added that to 'be a reader is to be a citizen of the world as fully as you can be'.
Camilla's visit also marked the launch of a five-year initiative by the Edinburgh International Book Festival in partnership with Edinburgh City Libraries.
Called Paper Trails, the project supported by Sir Ian will operate in five local libraries, including Ratho Library, to promote literature in local communities, including using the mobile library service to bring authors and artists into care homes.
The director of the Edinburgh Book Festival Jenny Niven was also part of the event, alongside Sir Ian Rankin (Lesley Martin/PA)
The community of Ratho was served by a mobile library while the permanent facility was rebuilt, opening in the spring, and Camilla toured a similar mobile unit and joked with Sir Ian when she spotted some of his novels on the shelves.
She quipped 'I'm sure they go down very well with the readers,' before donating a collection of books.
During her visit, the Queen also sat down with a group of children from a nursery which shares its premises with the library and also met a group of budding authors and poets from the Citizen Collective Young People's Writers Programme.
She told them: 'I can see I've met you at very early stages in your career – good luck.'

Sophie Ellis-Bextor says AI cannot copy human connection in music
The Murder On The Dancefloor singer, 46, said she is 'sure AI will have a place' in her industry, but that it will be 'very hard' for it to mimic imperfections. Ellis-Bextor was presented with her award on Wednesday by Nordoff and Robbins, the UK's largest music therapy charity. She told the PA news agency: 'I think there's something about the human connection in music that is impossible to mimic. 'I think the nuances and complexity of a human heart are something that only we have the hold the key to, really. 'So I'm sure AI will have its place actually. But I think when it comes to imperfections that we hold, it's very hard for something to mimic imperfections. 'We're very good at doing that, so I think, I think we've got that safe actually.' The singer was awarded alongside Rick Astley, who received the outstanding achievement in music award; Noah Kahan, who was handed the best male award; and band Idles, who were named best live act. Amarillo singer Tony Christie, who received the icon award, was diagnosed with dementia four years ago but has previously said he will not let the illness stop him. He told PA at the London ceremony that he discovered he had dementia after struggling with crossword puzzles. 'All my life I've been good at crosswords and things like that,' the 82-year-old said. 'Suddenly, I was struggling with crosswords.' The singer said that after his diagnosis, his doctor told him it is beneficial that he is in music, as listening to songs could help slow his deterioration. 'It makes people listen,' Christie said. 'Instead of sitting there quiet and worrying about it, they listen to music.' The O2 Silver Clef awards celebrate artists who touch the lives of people through their music and the event helps to raise funds for Nordoff and Robbins to provide music therapy for vulnerable people across the UK. Mika, who was given the global impact award, told of what Nordoff and Robbins means to him. 'I had loads of issues growing up,' the Grace Kelly singer told PA. 'I was kicked out of school. I was super dyslexic and bullied and so I hid in my own world. 'The only thing that pulled me out of that was music. 'So it kind of was a therapy, without even me realising it was happening and that changed my whole life. 'After being kicked out of school, I started working, I started doing music, I felt like a person again, and from then, I never left.'

Police investigate Bob Vylan over ‘death to IDF' call at gig before Glastonbury
In video footage, Bobby Vylan, whose real name is reportedly Pascal Robinson-Foster, 34, appears to be at Alexandra Palace telling crowds: 'Death to every single IDF soldier out there as an agent of terror for Israel. Death to the IDF.' The pair had supported Iggy Pop at the London venue on his tour on May 28, a month before Glastonbury. Bob Vylan performed on the West Holts Stage at Glastonbury (Yui Mok/PA) A Met Police spokesperson said on Wednesday: 'Officers are investigating comments allegedly made during a concert at Alexandra Palace earlier this year. 'The decision to investigate follows the emergence of footage which appears to have been filmed at the venue on 28 May 2025.' It is not clear when the investigation was launched. The probe comes after it was revealed Bob Vylan will no longer play Radar festival in Manchester The duo were due to headline the Saturday slot but no longer appear in the line-up. A statement posted on Radar festival's Instagram account said: 'Bob Vylan will not be appearing at Radar festival this weekend.' It has since updated its website, changing the Saturday slot to 'Headliner TBA' (to be announced). In response, the group shared the festival's statement on their Instagram story, adding the caption: 'Silence is not an option. We will be fine, the people of Palestine are hurting. Manchester we will be back.' The rap group had issued a statement on Tuesday claiming they were being 'targeted for speaking up' after Avon and Somerset police began its investigation. The BBC has also faced criticism for livestreaming the set and has since apologised, describing the chants as 'antisemitic sentiments' that were 'unacceptable'. It later emerged BBC director-general Tim Davie was at Glastonbury while the performance was being livestreamed. A BBC spokesperson said: 'The director-general was informed of the incident after the performance and at that point he was clear it should not feature in any other Glastonbury coverage.' On Monday, the group were banned from entering the US, ahead of their tour, with deputy secretary of state Christopher Landau revoking the duo's visas for their 'hateful tirade at Glastonbury'. They have also been pulled from their upcoming performance at a German music venue. Bob Vylan are expected to perform at the Boardmasters surfing and music festival in Newquay, Cornwall, in August.
