City police nab three inter-state burglars involved in bag lifting from cars
Nashik: City police on Tuesday arrested three men accused of bag lifting were arrested on Wednesday.
On May 13 the trio had allegely stolen a bag with Rs1.5 lakh from a car after breaking its windshield.
A complaint was filed with Indiranagar police. Crime branch unit 2 officials visited the spot and checked CCTV footages of the area which revealed all three bike-borne men following the car to Chetananagar, Indiranagar.
The police then checked CCTV footages covering a stretch of over 90km from Nashik to Malegaon to apprehend the suspects. With the help of technical analysis, names and addresses of the trio were ascertained.
The accused are identified as Sameul Parera (57) of Ghodbunder, Thane West, Harish Gudeti (35) of Nellor, Andhra Pradesh, and Abhijeet Prasad (30) of Daund, Pune.
For two days, the police kept a watch on the trio in Ghodbunder before nabbing them. Upon questioning, the suspects confessed to committing the crime. The police seized the cash along with a four-wheeler and a two-wheeler they used in committing the crime.

Assam: Gaurav Gogoi demands probe into illegal coal mining, alleges Sonowal removed for opposing syndicate
Jorhat (Assam) [India], May 25 (ANI): Congress MP from Jorhat, Gaurav Gogoi, on Saturday called for a detailed investigation into alleged illegal coal mining and syndicates operating in Assam and Meghalaya. Addressing a press conference at the District Congress Bhawan in Jorhat, Gogoi claimed that a 'coal mafia' is thriving under political protection and linked it to changes in Assam's leadership. Gogoi told ANI, 'Yesterday in Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a Rising North East summit where he spoke of private investment. I wrote to him the same day highlighting the ground reality in Assam and Meghalaya -- the illegal coal syndicate.' He referred to an Enforcement Directorate action from April, claiming it revealed how coal illegally mined in Meghalaya is transported into Assam using forged documents, with alleged bribes of Rs1.5 lakh per truck. 'This money is hoarded at various spots in Guwahati,' he said. The Congress MP said no significant action had been taken by the governments of Assam or Meghalaya. 'This reminds me of the Umrangshu incident where nine labourers died in an illegal rat-hole mine. A subsequent probe revealed 245 such operations in Assam. This could not happen without political protection,' Gogoi alleged. He added, 'There has been no serious investigation into the coal syndicate. No serious arrests. The Assam government remains silent. So does Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.' Gogoi further alleged that former Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal was removed for attempting to dismantle the syndicate. 'Sonowal came to power promising to end the coal syndicate. But perhaps his actions did not sit well with Himanta Biswa Sarma and his colleagues, leading to his removal despite leading his party to victory a second time.' He also criticised the Prime Minister for not visiting shelling victims in Poonch. 'It's unfortunate that the PM is addressing rallies in Bihar while people in Poonch suffer. A special session in Parliament should be convened to discuss these issues once delegations return from abroad,' Gogoi said. (ANI)

Cop caught taking bribe in dowry case
Lucknow: The UP vigilance department on Thursday arrested sub-inspector Shani Singh of Rohta police station, Meerut, red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs1.5 lakh. The bribe was allegedly demanded to manipulate a dowry-related investigation in favour of the complainant. Officials said the trap was laid following a complaint by a serving officer of the Indian Armed Forces, currently posted at RHQ North East, Kolkata. The officer alleged that Singh demanded money to file a closure report in a dowry harassment case involving the complainant's family. According to the complaint, the officer's son, Aditya Kumar Tomar — a bank manager with Nainital Bank in Haldwani — married Vanshika, daughter of Yogendra Singh from Dalampur village under Rohta police station, on Feb 18, 2024. Vanshika lived with her in-laws for two months before allegedly leaving the house on Apr 22, without informing anyone. She is said to have taken her personal jewellery and some valuables from the in-laws' house and left with her father. Despite filing complaints at Kankarkheda police station and with the SSP's office, the family received no response. The complainant took leave from duty and came to Meerut to present evidence to Singh. On May 18, Singh visited the complainant's residence and allegedly offered to "help" in the case. A follow-up meeting was held on May 19, during which Singh reportedly demanded Rs3 lakh to file a final report (FR) in the complainant's favour. After negotiation, the bribe amount was reduced to Rs1.5 lakh, with the officer allegedly warning that non-payment would result in a chargesheet against the family. Refusing to succumb to the extortion, the complainant approached the vigilance department. A trap was laid and Singh was caught red-handed while accepting the bribe at the complainant's home on May 22. The bribe amount of Rs1.5 lakh was recovered from the accused, and an FIR is being registered against him at Kankarkheda police station under relevant sections of the law.
