Kendrick Perkins is picking 'skinny Luka' Doncic to win NBA MVP
Gone is the layer of blubber that enveloped his body over the last few years and hindered his efforts to get back on defense and stay in front of his man on that end of the floor. Now, his muscles are defined, and it is exciting news for Lakers fans and a nightmare in the making for the rest of the NBA.
ESPN personality Kendrick Perkins gave Doncic credit for transforming his body and taking all the criticism the superstar has received to heart.
'Luka and the Los Angeles Lakers, they broke through the internet today because they're one,' Perkins said. 'They're one now. You see them? We ain't looking at the chubby, fat Luka, the beer-sipping Luka. We ain't looking at medium Luka. We looking at skinny Luka. I saw his jawline. I saw veins popping out of his ears. The man is in shape. and it's going to be a problem this year for the rest of the league.'
In fact, Perkins proclaimed that the 6-foot-7 guard is his "early pick for MVP."
'The man is skinny,' Perkins added. 'By the way, he is my early pick for MVP. If we saw what we were getting out of Chubby Luka, imagine what we about to get out of damn skinny Luka. We about to get the best version of Luka Doncic.'
It remains to be seen if the Lakers will win enough games for Doncic to have a real shot at the league MVP award, an award he hasn't won. But his quality of play and performance will be the most important thing.
He already has career averages of 28.6 points on 46.8% field-goal shooting and 35% 3-point shooting, 8.6 rebounds and 8.2 assists a game. If he was able to do that while fat, out of shape and banged up, it is scary to imagine how much better and more refined he could be while in terrific shape.
His shooting efficiency and free throw shooting have lots of room for improvement, as does his ball security, and he can play better man-to-man defense. Improving in those areas would help the Lakers get closer to championship contention.

Should the Nets still keep tabs on Bucks' Giannis Antetokounmpo?
The Brooklyn Nets have made it clear since last offseason that they are trying to rebuild the franchise through the draft, as evidenced by their five picks in the first round of the 2025 NBA Draft. Brooklyn would presumably like to improve on its 26-56 record from the 2024-25 season so there is a possibility that general manager Sean Marks could keep his options open. While Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo is more likely to remain in Milwaukee than he is to request a trade this offseason, there is some reporting that could give other teams reason to continue monitoring Antetokounmpo's status. "Sources tell me there's still nothing set in stone about whether Giannis Antetokounmpo will stay in Milwaukee or whether he will be leaving," ESPN's Shams Charania reported on Monday. The Bucks have made various moves to surround Antetokounmpo with the best team possible given the circumstances, but Charania's report could indicate that the "Greek Freak" isn't quite sold as of yet. With that being said, there is still a possibility that Antetokounmpo is dealt before the beginning of the 2025-26 campaign so let's take a look at what the Nets could do to potentially bring him to Brooklyn (h/t B/R's Grant Hughes): The Mock Trade Nets Receive: Giannis Antetokounmpo. Bucks Receive: forward Michael Porter Jr., 2027 first-round pick (top-1 protected), 2027 first-round pick (via NYK), 2029 first-round pick (top-1 protected), 2029 first-round pick (via HOU), 2031 first-round pick (top-1 protected). Reason For/Against The Nets Doing This Trade Over the past couple of years, it has been made clear through a myriad of reports that the Nets are fond of Antetokounmpo and seemed to prefer trading for him as opposed to other players considered to be less than untouchable. Brian Lewis of the New York Post reported during the 2024-25 season that Brooklyn was still interested in Antetokounmpo so the latest reporting could potentially reinvigorate that interest. The argument for trading for Antetokounmpo is simple: the Nets would be getting one of the best players in the league and is still just 30 years old. Antetokounmpo would be far and away Brooklyn's best player heading into next season if this trade went through and he would still have players like Nic Claxton, Cam Thomas (assuming he re-signs), and Egor Demin to share the floor with. The argument for passing on trading for Antetokounmpo is also understandable given that the Nets would be giving up their own first-round picks in 2027, 2029, and 2031 as long as those picks aren't first overall. It's hard to see a team like the Bucks do this trade with any kind of protections on the picks especially since Antetokounmpo is still in MVP-level form and you wouldn't give up Antetokounmpo while not being able to draft the best available players over the next few seasons. Verdict While the idea of acquiring Antetokounmpo is understandably enticing to any team in the NBA, the Nets have to think about the long game during this rebuild. Getting Antetokounmpo would ensure that Brooklyn is going all in on a team that would presumably compete for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, but is probably not good enough to compete for a championship. While Thomas, Claxton, and Demin are still young, Antetokounmpo is most likely towards the end of his prime, assuming that he doesn't age as well as Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James. Even if Antetokounmpo ages gracefully, he has three years left on his contract with the third year being a player option. So, the Nets would presumably have two years to convince Antetokounmpo to not only want a trade, but to sign another contract that would take him through the end of his career. Marks has already gone all in once during his tenure as GM and Kevin Durant, James Harden, and Kyrie Irving did not work out for a variety of reasons, some outside of anyone's control. Marks said at the end of the season that the Nets will keep their minds open as they progress through the offseason, but ending the rebuild for Antetokounmpo may not be the move. Brooklyn would most likely not do this trade, at least not how the mock trade suggests.

2025 NFL Odds: Public Backing Aaron Rodgers, Steelers Over 8.5; To Make Playoffs
Aaron Rodgers hasn't taken one snap as a Steeler yet, but that hasn't stopped bettors from backing him and Pittsburgh to make some noise during the season and into the playoffs. At BetMGM, the Steelers' 8.5 is the second-most-bet Over regular-season win total. They're behind the Seahawks, whose win total is 8.5 as well. Also at the book, bettors like the Black and Yellow to earn a postseason bid. In that market, Steelers +140 to make the playoffs is second in tickets and third in handle. Could bettors' faith in Pittsburgh be because Mike Tomlin has never had a losing season as head coach or because Rodgers — the four-time MVP — is under center? Let's take a glance at a few more Steelers odds at BetMGM as of Aug. 6. Super Bowl+4000 (bet $10 to win $410 total) AFC Championship+2000 (bet $10 to win $210 total) AFC No. 1 Seed+2200 (bet $10 to win $230 total) AFC Super Bowl Winning Conference-115 (bet $10 to win $18.70 total) AFC North Division Winner+550 (bet $10 to win $65 total) AFC North Second Place+290 (bet $10 to win $39 total) Rodgers comes into his Steelers tenure after two years playing for the Jets. In his debut with New York, he tore his left Achilles tendon just four snaps into the first game of the season. Year 1 with Gang Green was over before it ever really began. In Year 2, he passed for 28 touchdowns and 3,897 yards, but the Jets missed the playoffs, finishing with a 5-12 record. Then, in February, the Jets announced they were moving on from the 10-time Pro Bowler, and in June, the Steelers announced they were signing him to a one-year deal. Will the Tomlin-Rodgers tandem spell success for the Steelers, ultimately helping bettors who've backed them to cash in? Well, according to FOX Sports NFL writer Henry McKenna, that answer is complicated. "The Steelers have plenty of talent. Coach Mike Tomlin, Rodgers, DK Metcalf, T.J. Watt, Cameron Heyward, Darius Slay and Alex Highsmith could take this team to a championship. Technically," McKenna wrote. He continued: "Rodgers is a destabilizing force set to meet his match in Tomlin, one of the NFL's steadiest leaders. But chaos wins every time. Check out Murphy's Law. "It's possible to imagine Rodgers overwhelming Tomlin. And maybe everything falls apart in Pittsburgh, leading to a total cleaning of house. That's the wild thing about Rodgers. There might be no player with greater risk. And at his age, the rewards are less obvious." Want great stories delivered right to your inbox? Jayson Tatum takes in Patriots-Commanders joint practice without a walking boot
Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum was in Foxboro on Wednesday to take in the joint practice between the New England Patriots and the Washington Commanders. He did so without a boot on his right foot or a noticeable limp as he walked around the sideline. It looks like Tatum is doing well in his recovery from the torn Achilles he suffered three months ago in the NBA playoffs. He was moving around well as he watched Wednesday's practice, which is a welcome sight for Celtics fans patiently awaiting his return. The Celtics will not put a timeline on his recovery, though the expectation is Tatum will miss the entire 2025-26 season. But he's ditched his walking boot and doesn't appear to have a hitch in his step, sure signs the 27-year-old is making progress. After practice, Tatum had a chance to chat up Washington quarterback Jayden Daniels and several Patriots players. That included New England quarterback Drake Maye, who we are happy to report doesn't have any bad blood with Tatum despite their college allegiances. Tatum was a star in his one season at Duke. Maye made a name for himself at the University of North Carolina. In theory, the two should despise each other. That is not the case though. Maye is now a Boston sports fan, and he has loved watching Tatum in Green. "Yeah, shoot, he's a Duke guy, but what he's done for Boston," said Maye. "And obviously, I told him it was a heartbreak what happened to him. I look forward to seeing him come back." Maye previously met Tatum ahead of Game 1 of the 2024 Eastern Conference Finals against the Indiana Pacers, when the C's star gave him a signed jersey. Maye was rocking the jersey as he took in Boston's Game 1 win courtside at TD Garden. Maye played some hoop himself in high school, but won't compare himself to Tatum. "He's got probably a way bigger bag than I do," said Maye. The QB did share a funny story about his older brother, Luke, going up against Tatum. Luke was a member of the Tar Heels during Tatum's only season at Duke in 2016-17, and was tasked with guarding him for one of the heated Duke-UNC showdowns. "His first start was in Cameron [Indoor Stadium] against Duke, and he was guarding Jayson his first start," Maye recalled. "So it was pretty cool." Tatum scored 19 points and pulled down nine rebounds that game, but shot just 5-for-14 in the contest. Maye scored eight points for North Carolina, though Duke was victorious, 86-78. The Blue Devils also beat the Tar Heels in the ACC Tournament that year, but UNC got the last laugh as they won the NCAA Championship while Duke was knocked out in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
