Eastern Cape health dept probes baby death after clinic visit
According to a Facebook post, the mother rushed her infant to the clinic on Sunday, 11 May 2025. Clinic staff allegedly told her that Sundays were reserved for injury-related cases, not babies.
They reportedly advised her to return on Monday or visit a different clinic. Tragically, the baby died on Monday morning, 12 May 2025.
Health MEC Ntandokazi Capa immediately ordered an investigation into the incident.
'No health institution has the right to turn away any patient. Any staff member who does so will face internal disciplinary action,' said the MEC.
The Eastern Cape Health Department spokesperson Siyanda Manana confirmed that the department's Customer Care Directorate is handling the case. The department will release the outcome of the investigation once it is complete.
The Department of Health has blamed young doctors for refusing to take up posts in rural hospitals.
This follows reports that nearly 1,000 doctors remain unemployed after completing their community service, due to government funding shortages.
In response, several doctors have hit back, accusing the department of misrepresenting the situation and failing to offer them positions after they completed their internships and community service.

Tendai Ndoro dead at 40: What Happened to the football star?
The news of the passing of former Orlando Pirates striker Tendai Ndoro has left many devastated. The football star was reportedly found dead in his South African apartment at the age of 40, according to Soccer Laduma. His sudden passing follows a battle with illness earlier this year. According to the publication, a source confirmed that he was found dead at his apartment. 'Yes, unfortunately, he was found dead in his apartment here in South Africa. I am still in communication with someone close to his family.' Former Zimbabwe international midfielder Edelbert Dinha was one of the first to arrive at Ndoro's residence after hearing about his passing this afternoon. 'Eish, my brother, it's very sad and I'm not feeling good at all right now. I am actually at the scene as we speak. We are still waiting to hear the full story of what happened, but what I can confirm is that we heard about his passing this afternoon and rushed here to check. Apparently, he had already been gone for about three days,' said Dinha to the publication. He said the former Orlando Pirates star was alone at the time of his passing. 'Some of his uncles and aunts are here as well, having rushed to attend to the situation as soon as they got the news. Peter Ndlovu is also here, which is comforting because it shows that we are all standing together to support one of our own during this painful time. Sadly, Tendai was alone at the time of his passing, but as I said, we are still waiting for the full details of what really happened,' said Dinha. In May 2025, Ndoro had a successful operation to remove a tumour under his armpit. He revealed that his illness was not linked to diabetes, as per various reports. During that time, he posted a video from the hospital, reassuring fans that his condition was not as serious as many had feared. 'Hello guys, I'm okay. I'm in the hospital, undergoing treatment for a tumour that developed under my armpit. It's not diabetes. I'm sick, yes, but it's not that serious,' he said. Following the surgery, Ndoro announced its success and expressed gratitude to God for helping him through the recovery process. 'Congratulations to myself for the successful surgery I had this afternoon. It went well; the tumour in my hand was removed. Glory to the Almighty God for keeping us alive,' he said. Does Takealot sell weight loss wonder drug Ozempic?
E-commerce site Takealot has rubbished viral reports that it is selling Ozempic, the wonder weight loss drug that has taken the world by storm. The injectable – which contains the active ingredient Semaglutide – is only available via a doctor's prescription. On the X app, several users have posted claims that Takealot was selling Ozempic to the public without a prescription. One – ApheleleJody – even posted a screenshot of a picture of the words: 'Semaglutide: Once a week weight loss injections'. However, Takealot quickly shut down the speculation. Clarifying that the image was merely from a book about weight loss, and not the Ozempic itself. 'It's purely informational, not medical advice or a substitute for professional care. Happy shopping', the e-commerce site posted. While Takealot has disputed claims it sells Ozempic, another e-commerce site, Zulzi, confirms it does. The grocery and pharmacy online shop – which dispatches as little as 15 minutes – has repeatedly claimed that it stocks and delivers the pricey weight loss drug. As a disclaimer, it added on its X account: 'Just to be clear – Ozempic is prescription-only. We've got a qualified doctor + pharmacist onsite at our Paulshof offices. Consult, get your script, upload it in-app & we'll deliver in minutes'. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1. Cupcakes of Hope spread hope one cupcake at a time
SWEET treats with the power to help raise funds for children fighting cancer – this is how NPO Cupcakes 4 Kids with Cancer gives back to the community's most vulnerable. Also read: Cupcakes of Hope raises funds for childhood cancer The NPO is partnering with paediatrician, Dr Melissa Chettiar, on September 2, to sell delicious cupcakes at Kingsway Medical Centre, Suite 104 on the first floor. She explained that statistics from the SA Registry for Cancer record a rate of around 1000 new cases per year of childhood cancers in children under 16, pointing to a disturbing rise in cases. She said she has had cases where she diagnosed young children with cancer. 'These are heartbreaking cases. I just want to create awareness among the public, so I partnered with Cupcakes 4 Kids with Cancer last year, and again this year. It's an amazing initiative that raises funds for parents of children with cancer for transport and medical costs. This money is a tremendous help for parents, because chemotherapy, radiotherapy and other treatment is so expensive. Many parents cannot afford it,' said Melissa. She said that she supports such initiatives 100% and hopes the rest of the doctors at Kingsway Medical Centre can support it as well. Cupcakes are sold at R20 each, 4 for R60 or 6 for R100, and proceeds go towards funds for transport and medical costs for children with cancer. For more information, contact Shyanne Kanayee on 079 343 2791 or Adel Naidoo on 072 090 8877. What to look out for: It is important to pick up early warning signs, as the earlier the diagnosis, the better. Lumps or swellings on the body. Easy bruising and bleeding of the gums. Bleeding in or swelling of the joints. Headaches, loss of vision. A healthy child who starts having difficulty walking. Unexplained fever or weight loss over a period of time. It is important to visit a general practitioner or paediatrician for an early assessment if your child exhibits the above symptoms.
