Mexican mayoral candidate, 3 others shot dead during live broadcast of campaign rally

Indian Express13-05-2025

In a deadly incident captured live on camera, a mayoral candidate and three other people were gunned down in the Mexican state of Veracruz on Sunday night during a campaign event, the state governor said.
The local media identified the slain politician as Yesenia Lara Gutiérrez, who was part of Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum's Morena party, and was the mayoral candidate of Texistepec.
In a video posted online during a Facebook Live broadcast by Yesenia Lara, people were seen running and screaming after gunshots were heard at a procession of motorcycles and supporters carrying Morena flags.
The Facebook Live footage, where at least 20 gunshots were heard being fired behind the camera, was still available on Lara's Facebook page the following day.
Earlier, the crowd was seen smiling and cheering for Lara as the mayoral candidate greeted the residents while she paraded through the streets of Texistepec, surrounded by supporters.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed the attack on Monday and said that she wasn't still aware about the motive. Referring to the June 1 elections, the president said 'We're coordinating, particularly with the Secretary of Security, and with all the support needed during this electoral period from Veracruz and Durango.'
The state's attorney general office said that Lara was killed in the shootout along with three other people. Another three people were wounded in the incident. Authorities said that an investigation was ongoing in the matter and promised justice would be served.
Veracruz Governor Rocío Nahle in a post on X said, 'No position or office is worth a person's life. We will find those responsible for this cowardly murder of the Morena candidate and supporters in Texistepec.'
Attacks on politicians have been more often than not a common sight in Mexico due to violence linked to cartels, corruption and the multibillion-dollar narcotics trade.

Country musician Conner Smith fatally hit pedestrian with truck. No charges now, but probe ongoing

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Country musician Conner Smith fatally hit a pedestrian while driving his truck in Nashville over the weekend, and he currently faces no charges as an investigation continues, police said. Metro Nashville Police said Smith, 24, hit Dorothy Dobbins, 77, Sunday evening while she was crossing the road inside a marked crosswalk. Dobbins, a retired attorney, later died at a hospital. The Tennessee Bar Association posted on its website that Dobbins had been out walking her dog when she was hit. Police say Smith showed no signs of impairment. They believe the 'preliminary contributing factor' appears to be that Smith did not yield the right of way to the pedestrian. Smith's attorney, Worrick Robinson, said his client is cooperating with the investigation. 'His heart goes out to Ms. Dobbins' family during this incredibly difficult time," Robinson said in a statement. Dobbins was a leader in the city's legal aid and family law communities, where she practiced for over 40 years, according to posts by the Bar Association and the Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands. She played a 'foundational role in opening Nashville's first domestic violence shelter,' according to a Facebook post from the Legal Aid Society, and she wrote the state's first order of protection legislation. Smith was a 2024 new male artist of the year nominee at the Academy of Country Music Awards. He released his first full-length album, 'Smoky Mountains,' in 2024. The Nashville native has had gold-certified hits with 'Take it Slow' and 'Creek Will Rise,' according to his label, Big Machine. Smith had performed at Nashville's CMA Fest over the weekend.

Man Convicted In 1994 Graduation Party Massacre In US Arrested In Los Angeles Raids

A 49-year-old Vietnamese national, convicted in a notorious gang-related mass shooting, is among several illegal immigrants arrested by ICE in a weekend raid across Los Angeles that triggered violent protests. Cuong Chanh Phan was convicted of second-degree murder for his role in a deadly 1994 shooting at a high school graduation party in Southern California. According to the Department of Homeland Security, after being thrown out of the party, Phan returned with gang members and opened fire with semi-automatic rifles on a crowd of 30 people. Two teens, Dennis Buan, 18, and David Hang, 15 - were killed, and seven others were injured. A manhunt involving over 120 officers led to Phan's arrest along with eight other alleged gang members linked to the attack. "This criminal illegal alien is who Governor Newsom, Mayor Bass and the rioters in Los Angeles are trying to protect over US citizens," the Department of Homeland Security said in a statement issued on Monday. "It is sickening that Governor Newsom and Mayor Bass continue to protect violent criminal illegal aliens at the expense of the safety of American citizens and communities," said Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin. Phan's arrest was one among dozens made by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during a targeted operation in LA over the weekend. Several of those detained were convicted criminals with charges ranging from sexual assault to gang activity and murder. Another major arrest was Rolando Veneracion-Enriquez, 55, a Philippine national, who was sentenced to 37 years in prison for assault with intent to commit rape and sexual penetration with a foreign object in Pomona, California. As news of the arrests broke, protestors gathered across the city to oppose the detentions, even surrounding a downtown ICE detention centre where they believed the detainees were being held. Chaos escalated until President Donald Trump ordered the National Guard to intervene. An ICE source told The NY Post, "That's who they're protesting for, the actual criminals that are being arrested, the sex offenders, the terrorists, all that. You have criminals, gang members, terrorists, child molesters, and sex offenders that are being arrested, but since people don't know the background of the case or what's going on, everybody's innocent." "The public sees it as everybody's innocent, which is not true," the source added. Other individuals arrested include Armando Ordaz, 44, a Mexican national and alleged Bratz 13 gang member convicted of sexual battery; Delfino Aguilar-Martinez, 51, convicted of assault with a deadly weapon; Lionel Sanchez-Laguna, 55, with convictions for firing at an inhabited dwelling, domestic battery, child cruelty, assault with a firearm, and a DUI; and Victor Mendoza-Aguilar, 32, convicted of drug possession and assault with a deadly weapon. ICE reported that others detained had criminal convictions for drug dealing, robbery, grand larceny, and transporting "illegal aliens."

Mexico president rejects Trump aide's claim that she encouraged protests in LA: ‘Have always been…'

Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum on Tuesday rejected an "absolutely false" allegation levelled against her by US senior official Kristi Noem that she encouraged the protests against immigration raids in Los Angeles. Sheinbaum took to X to respond to US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem's allegations of "encouraging violent protests". The Mexican President on Monday condemned the violent acts during the protests against the immigration raids in Los Angeles and asked US officials to respect the rule of law while policing migration. Meanwhile, Noem told reporters at the White House, "Claudia Sheinbaum came out and encouraged more protests in LA, and I condemn her for that." "She should not be encouraging violent protests that are going on," Noem added. She said that while people are allowed to peacefully protest, any violence "is not acceptable and it's not going to happen in America". Sheinbaum took to X to respond to the allegation and said, "A few moments ago, in response to a question from a media outlet, the United States Secretary of Homeland Security mistakenly mentioned that I encouraged violent protests in Los Angeles. I inform you that this is absolutely false." She posted a video of her statement from the press conference on Monday and said that in it, "I clearly condemn violent demonstrations. We have always been against them, and even more so now in the high office I hold." Sheinbaum also reaffirmed Mexico's position to be the "defense of honest, hardworking Mexicans who support the United States economy and their families in Mexico". "I am certain that dialogue and respect are the best path to understanding between our peoples and our nations, and that this misunderstanding will be cleared up," she added. Earlier on Sunday, Sheinbaum had defended Mexicans reportedly detained in the immigration raids in Los Angeles and said that migrants "are not criminals". She backed the migrants living in America and said, "Mexicans living in the United States are good men and women, honest people who went to the United States to seek a better life for themselves and to support their families. They are not criminals! They are good men and women!" The situation in Los Angeles remained grim amid the deployment of Marines and the National Guard against the backdrop of the protests against the immigration raids.
