Mexican mayoral candidate, 3 others shot dead during live broadcast of campaign rally
In a deadly incident captured live on camera, a mayoral candidate and three other people were gunned down in the Mexican state of Veracruz on Sunday night during a campaign event, the state governor said. The local media identified the slain politician as Yesenia Lara Gutiérrez, who was part of Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum's Morena party, and was the mayoral candidate of Texistepec. In a video posted online during a Facebook Live broadcast by Yesenia Lara, people were seen running and screaming after gunshots were heard at a procession of motorcycles and supporters carrying Morena flags. The Facebook Live footage, where at least 20 gunshots were heard being fired behind the camera, was still available on Lara's Facebook page the following day. Earlier, the crowd was seen smiling and cheering for Lara as the mayoral candidate greeted the residents while she paraded through the streets of Texistepec, surrounded by supporters. Referring to the June 1 elections, the president said 'We're coordinating, particularly with the Secretary of Security, and with all the support needed during this electoral period from Veracruz and Durango.' The state's attorney general office said that Lara was killed in the shootout along with three other people. Another three people were wounded in the incident. Authorities said that an investigation was ongoing in the matter and promised justice would be served. Veracruz Governor Rocío Nahle in a post on X said, 'No position or office is worth a person's life. We will find those responsible for this cowardly murder of the Morena candidate and supporters in Texistepec.' Attacks on politicians have been more often than not a common sight in Mexico due to violence linked to cartels, corruption and the multibillion-dollar narcotics trade.

Mexican Mayoral Candidate Gunned Down Along With Three Supporters As Politicians Keep Being Targeted
Yesenia Lara The mayoral candidate of a Mexican city was gunned down on Sunday during a campaign event as deadly violence against politicians continues to soar in the country. The politician in question was Yesenia Lara, who was the candidate of President Claudia Sheinbaum's ruling Morena party. She was running to be the next mayor of Texistepec, in the eastern state of Veracruz. Videos of the incident show people running away as gunshots can be heard at the rally, which involved a motorcycle caravan and people carrying Morena flags. Three of her supporters were killed as well, while three others were wounded. Veracruz Governor Rocio Nahle reacted to the crime, saying "no position is worth a person's life." "We will find those responsible for this cowardly murders of the candidate and Morena supporters in Texistepec; 4 dead and three wounded," she said in a post on X. Last week a municipal councilwoman in Jalisco and head nurse at the Teocaltiche Community Hospital, Cecilia Ruvacalba, was shot and killed by three armed individuals. According to witness accounts, three masked gunmen entered the hospital during the early hours of May 9 and immediately opened fire. Responding officers found Ruvalcaba's body with at least two gunshot wounds, while investigators recovered spent shell casings and a bullet near the scene. The Jalisco Attorney General's Office said the investigation is ongoing as authorities work to identify and locate those responsible. In late April, Teocaltiche City Council Secretary José Luis Pereida was fatally shot outside a seafood restaurant near the city center, allegedly by cartel gunmen. Law enforcement officers have also come under attack. Last month, two officers — including Teocaltiche's police chief — were killed by suspected criminal organizations. In February, eight additional officers went missing under similar circumstances. Last October, Chipacingo Mayor Alejandro Arcos was decapitated in an attack by criminal groups.
