AIIMS Raipur first government institute in Chhattisgarh to perform successful kidney paired transplant
RAIPUR: AIIMS Raipur did its first Swap Kidney Transplant also known as Kidney Paired Transplant (KPD) to become the first amongst all newer AIIMS and first government institute in Chhattisgarh to perform such critical transplant.
The achievement reflects the institution's aim on innovative solutions for patients struggling with advanced Kidney disease, under the guidance of the ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
It is estimated that Swap Kidney Transplant led to a fifteen percent increase in the number of transplants. National Organisation and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) has recommended to all the states and union territories for its implementation of Swap donor transplantation and it has also decided to have a 'uniform one nation one swap transplant programme'.
In Swap transplant, a patient with renal failure who has a living kidney donor, but is unable to donate a kidney due incompatible Blood Group or HLA antibodies, receives a kidney transplant by swapping with another incompatible pair. This results in both the pair receiving successful kidney transplants.
In Chhattisgarh, two End-Stage Renal Disease patients, aged 39 years and 41 years from Bilaspur, were on dialysis for three years. They were advised to undergo Kidney Transplant. Their wife came forward as Kidney Donor. However, the blood group of the wife did not match with their husband. While the first pair of husband and wife had blood group B+ and O+ blood group, the second pair had blood group O+ and B+.
To overcome this challenge, the team at AIIMS Raipur arranged a swap transplant, wherein each donor donated her kidney to the other recipient, ensuring blood group compatibility and enabling successful transplantation.

Union Health Minister JP Nadda inaugurates 1st edition of 'Conclave on Best Practices' at AIIMS Nagpur
New Delhi [India], June 13 (ANI): Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Jagat Prakash Nadda, virtually addressed the first edition of the Conclave on 'Best Practices' on Friday. The two-day conclave was organised by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Nagpur. According to a release from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the two-day Conclave seeks to showcase exemplary practices adopted by various AIIMS institutions, focusing on patient-centric care, operational efficiency, digital transformation, and academic excellence. AIIMS institutes from across the country (AIIMS Bhopal, AIIMS Jammu, AIIMS Bilaspur, AIIMS Jodhpur, AIIMS Nagpur, AIIMS Deoghar, AIIMS Patna, AIIMS Gorakhpur, AIIMS Guwahati, AIIMS Raipur) , along with the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) division and the Ministry of Defence, collaborated in the conclave. CG inks MoUs with 5 major bodies to align healthcare services with global standards
Raipur: Chhattisgarh govt on Thursday signed an Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with five prominent national and international institutions to bring state healthcare system, in line with the global benchmarks and strengthen service delivery across all regions. The agreement was formalized by Health Minister Shri Shyam Bihari Jaiswal at Mahanadi Bhawan in Nava Raipur during a ceremony. Jaiswal said, "With this collective effort, we aim to position Chhattisgarh as a leading state in national health indices and deliver services that are efficient, transparent, and compassionate. "Among the five institutions United Nations Development Programme which will provide strategic and technical assistance to state immunization programmes. AIIMS Raipur will support improvements in maternal and child healthcare , Center for Catalyzing Change will bolster adolescent health and awareness under National Adolescent Health Programme, Bihar Voluntary Health Association will implement targeted health interventions among marginalized lot and NIMHANS will oversee the expansion and reinforcement of mental health services in the state. Action plans with WHO and UNICEF were discussed focusing on disease surveillance, nutrition, child and maternal health, and broader public health resilience. Secretary of public health Amit Kataria, commissioner and cirector Priyanka Shukla were present.
