'Cycling naked is nothing compared to tumour pain'
"I would happily go cycle naked around the capital 100 times in a row than go through having my brain tumour again."Those are the words of Stephen Lewis, who will take on the World Naked Bike Ride in London with his partner on 14 June. The couple from Newark in Nottinghamshire will be raising money for the mental health charity Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) because of their struggles after Mr Lewis's diagnosis and treatment of a brain tumour. The 38-year-old, who works as a train driver, says he had his work and life upended by the cholesterol granuloma between his brain and eye socket, and still deals with the aftermath two years later.
"When I first had symptoms I wasn't overly sort of bothered by them," Mr Lewis said.He had started to experience double vision in 2023 and saw an optician, who assured him it was normal for someone his age.But after feeling that something was not right in his body, he sought out an MRI scan which revealed the tumour."I remember the room turning into like this tunnel, and Shayne was sat to my left, and I completely shut down."He was asking all the right questions, but I remember at that point, I sort of went into this self-preservation mode, and because of the nature of it no-one truly knew how to operate."
'Mentally exhausted'
After visiting hospitals in Nottingham, Sheffield, and Lincoln, a surgeon in Leicester figured out how to proceed with the removal, Mr Lewis said.He was told the tumour might be cancerous, and there was no way of knowing until it would have been taken out.Mr Lewis said that was when doctors told him to consider writing his will.It turned out the tumour between his eye socket and brain was a cholesterol granuloma, which is a type of benign cyst.Despite the successful removal, the ordeal left Mr Lewis feeling at his "lowest" afterwards."I held myself up strong the whole time, being strong for everyone else as well because it upsets so many family members, especially my mum," he said."Perhaps after it all, because I had done that so hard, maybe my brain was mentally exhausted from it, and I finally felt the true nature of what I went through."
He feared the tumour would stop him from working as a train driver, which had been his "goal in life".Despite his recovery progress, he can currently only work up to three days a week because of his medication, although he said this should be only temporary. It was one of his partner's friends who invited the pair to take part in the World Naked Bike Ride to commemorate the overcoming of the health scare."I thought, not a chance," Mr Lewis recalls of his initial reaction. "Then I sat on it and thought, you know what, if I could go through what I went through with my brain tumour, then I can do anything."I figured as well, because of the impact that all this has had on my mental health, I'd like to sort of strip away the stigma."
He said there were lingering elements of the railway industry being "male-oriented", which made it important to encourage people to talk about their mental health."I thought by doing this bold move, it'll gain people's interest, and it has really," he said."It's raised a lot of conversations, certainly with colleagues, talking about their own mental health stories, so in my eyes it's really worked."The route of the World Naked Bike Ride will see the pair cycle through some of London's busiest areas bearing it all.Cyclists from across the world will depart at 14:50 BST on 14 June from Regents Park.

Doctor warns of 'highly toxic' effect of popular natural remedy - after it puts toddler in a coma
Ingesting tea tree oil could result in life-threatening organ damage, seizures and even a coma, a GP has warned. According to Dr Sermed Mezher, a UK based doctor, swallowing tiny amounts of the essential oil can result in serious poisoning 'within a minute'. In an Instagram video that has so far been viewed over 2.1million times, Dr Mezher explained the risks in response to a video of a young boy who ended up in a coma after swallowing it. Dr Mezher said: 'Swallowing tea tree oil can be highly toxic due to its potent chemical composition, which includes terpinen-4-ol, cineole, and other volatile compounds.' Terpinen-4-ol is the most abundant compound in tea tree oil—extracted from the Melaleuca alternifolia tree—which posses antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties. However when ingested, the oil can rapidly affect the nervous system, leading to drowsiness, loss of coordination and seizures. In 2022 alone, the US poison control centre treated more than 2,200 cases of toxicity linked to tea tree oil. 'One of them was a 23-month-old boy who drank just 10mls which put him in a coma for five hours until he thankfully recovered,' Dr Mezher explained. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Sermed Mezher (@drsermedmezher) He added that its supposed benefits for skin health may also be bogus. 'Tree oil has been sold as a miracle cure to multiple skin conditions, and yet there's very little evidence that it works,' he said. A 2023 study found that tea tree oil has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that helped treat teenage and adult acne—though researchers cautioned it was not possible to draw conclusions on its safety. The poison control centre treated twice as many cases of toxicity caused by tea tree oil compared to any other essential oil, including cinnamon, clove and eucalyptus oil. 'I don't know about you, but I am not keeping this at home,' Dr Mezher cautioned. As well as attacking the nervous system, ingesting the 'horrifically toxic' product can also irritate the gastrointestinal tract, causing nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. 'Tea tree oil is also harsh on the liver,' Dr Mezher added. 'The body struggles to metabolise its toxic components, potentially leading to organ damage with repeated or high-dose exposure.' 'Because tea tree oil absorbs quickly into the bloodstream, poisoning symptoms can appear within minutes to a few hours. 'If ingestion occurs, immediate medical attention is essential to prevent serious complications.' The NHS warns against trying to make someone who has swallowed something poisonous and is unconscious sick, and recommends instead putting them in the recovery position until an ambulance arrives. Tea tree oil, a common ingredient in many skincare products, has previously been linked to a number of superbug infections including MRSA—a type of bacteria that is resistant to treatment and causes life-threatening infection. US scientists discovered that repeated low-dose use of the essential oil made the MRSA bacteria, as well as and salmonella, more resistant to antibiotics. Professor David McDowell, from the University of Ulster, warned that people who use tea tree oil on their skin repeatedly to treat acne, could be 'stressing' the bacteria on the skin rather than killing it—increasing their resistance to antibiotics. 'Although tea tree oil may be an effective antimicrobial agent when appropriately used at high concentrations, its application at low concentrations may contribute to the development of antibiotic resistance in human pathogens,' he warned.

Fetterman rocked by latest staff upheaval amid spiraling health concerns
Another key staffer has departed John Fetterman's office amid the Pennsylvania Senator's reported mental health issues. A blockbuster New York Magazine feature last month painted the Pennsylvania Senator as not well and behaving erratically since being treated for depression. Further tales have been published since, including an old video of Fetterman behaving poorly on a plane and driving a staffer to tears with an outburst during a meeting with union representatives. Fetterman has consistently lashed out at the story as a 'one source hit piece' but in its wake, several staffers have left him. That continued Tuesday as Fetterman's Chief of Staff, Krysta Sinclair Juris, announced her departure. Juris replaced Adam Jentleson, who Fetterman has identified as the 'one source' who went on the record about his alleged experiences with the Senator in the magazine piece. The Senator painted her departure as amicable in a statement. 'I'm grateful for Krysta's work. She's been an invaluable member of the team for over two years and I wish her all the best.' Cabelle St. John, Fetterman's former deputy chief of staff, senior adviser and scheduling director, is taking over the job from Juris. 'Cabelle St. John has been a trusted advisor since day 1 in the office. I'm lucky to have her taking over as my Chief of Staff and I'm confident she'll do a great job,' he said. The news comes after the latest criticism of Fetterman was published this past weekend, suggesting he is an absentee Senator during a debate with Republican Dave McCormick. The Philadelphia Inquirer - one of Pennsylvania's more prominent home state newspapers - told him to step aside. In an opinion piece published by the paper's editorial board Sunday, Fetterman was told 'to serve Pennsylvanians, or step away' due to what the board believes is a neglect of his duties as a U.S. Senator. Fetterman was bashed for missing votes, and for his lack of travel around the Commonwealth. Fetterman responded that the votes he has missed have been 'procedural' in nature, adding: 'At this point I'm hearing I'm doing that job, I'm defending on all those things and all of those important votes, I've always been there.' 'We all know those votes that I've missed were on Monday. Those are travel days, and I have three young kids and I, those are throwaway procedural votes that there were never determinative. They were important. That's a choice that I made,' Fetterman concluded. The bombshell story in New York Magazine features several concerning accusations about Fetterman's behavior, including not taking medicine prescribed after he spent time in a mental health facility in 2023. Only one staffer would go public with the claims and Fetterman has personally denied them. Some of the anonymous staffers shared marital strife and political disagreements with his wife Gisele. Former Chief of Staff Adam Jentleson is the most public face of the story, titled 'The Hidden Struggle of John Fetterman.' One year after Fetterman's release from the traumatic-brain-injury and neuropsychiatry unit at Walter Reed Hospital, Jentleson wrote a letter the division's director who treated Fetterman there. 'I think John is on a bad trajectory and I'm really worried about him,' Jentleson wrote in the 1,600-word email with the subject line: 'Concerns.' He added that the senator 'won't be with us for much longer' if he doesn't change his behavior, with Jentleson claiming these are 'the things you said to flag, so I am flagging.' One of the things he was told to flag: that Fetterman purchased a gun, though Jentleson admits the senator 'takes all the necessary precautions, and living where he does I understand the desire for personal protection.' Jentleson is referring to the hard-scrabble small town of Braddock where Fetterman served as mayor and still lives. Fetterman is accused of everything from the physical - 'not taking his meds' to eating fast food multiple times a day - to the mental - lying, 'self-centered monologues,' 'conspiratorial thinking; megalomania' - among his issues. The senator is also allegedly obsessed with social media despite admitting it was an 'accelerant' of his depression and driving 'recklessly' to the point that staffers refused to ride with him and a police officer said it was 'a miracle no one died' after one accident last June. Jentleson also argued that 'every person who was supposed to help him stay on his recovery plan has been pushed out.' The former chief of staff later said in an interview a year after writing the letter that he's telling his side of the story because he believes Fetterman's trajectory has taken him out of consideration to lead the Democrats going forward. 'Part of the tragedy here is that this is a man who could be leading Democrats out of the wilderness but I also think he's struggling in a way that shouldn't be hidden from the public.' Quite the opposite, as The Intercept recently reported that Fetterman's campaign is bleeding money and losing small-dollar donors ever since his meeting with Trump. The author, Ben Terris, spoke to Fetterman ahead of publication and got a text message from him asking: 'Why is this a story? He added that the number of staffers leaving is typical for Washington and he is the 'best version' of himself right now. Fetterman also denied claims that towards the beginning of his first term, he had to be spoken with for 'an hour' with staffers 'trying to trying to convince him, to talk him out of some crazy fantasy' that he wouldn't be allowed in the Senate. He also said there is no truth to accusations that he began to 'sour' on his own party after bipartisan efforts to prevent him from wearing his trademark hoodie and shorts to the Senate floor. Things became somewhat more complicated when asked about arguments over Gaza and meeting with Donald Trump with his wife Gisele, herself having come to the U.S. as an illegal migrant. Fetterman called their disagreements 'very common in political marriage' and said Gisele 'has her own voice. Gisele, for her part, told New York Magazine that Jentleson is trying to harm her husband and lied to her about his health.

Love Island star's secret connection to previous finalist is revealed ahead of their arrival in the villa
Love Island has confirmed the full line-up of contestants set to enter the villa for the 12th series on June 9, for another season of love triangles, bedroom trysts and messy breakups. After joining the popular dating series in January 2023, Maya Jama will once again be at the helm, as the ITV2 show celebrates a decade on screens and promises to have 'more twists and turns than ever before' in honour of the anniversary. This year's crop of hopefuls include a Declan Rice body double, a firebreather and a Maura Higgins lookalike. But one of the new Islanders may have an edge on his fellow castmates, as he boasts a connection to a previous finalist. According to The Sun, Dejon Noel-Williams is pals with 2023 star Tyrique Hyde, who made it all the way to the final with then-girlfriend Ella Thomas. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Dejon, who plays football semi-professionally alongside his job as a personal trainer, is also the son of former Premier League striker Gifton. Ex-Watford and Stoke striker Gifton, 45, began his professional football career in 1996 and last played for Codicote in 2017 before retiring. And during his time at Watford from 1996 to 2003, he was teammates with none other than Micah Hyde, who is the father of Tyrique. The two stars played together at the club and looked to have been good friends, with their sons Dejon and Tyrique being the same age. The two boys also both followed in their fathers' footsteps by becoming footballers themselves. And in his role as a personal trainer, Dejon also counts Tyrique as one of his clients, with the duo often sharing videos of them working out at the gym together. Ahead of his villa entrance, Dejon revealed that he 'met all kinds of famous people' because of his footballing father and even remarked on a meeting with David Beckham. He said: 'When I was younger it was weird because he was just my dad, but we'd go to a game and fans were asking for photos. I've met David Beckham, he was really nice.' Dejon, from London, boasts 11,000 followers on social media thanks in part to his regular shirtless gym snaps and in 2021, represented the Grenada national football team. His bio reads: 'I go beyond the gym -helping you build Strength, Confidence & Discipline for life.' Asked what he was looking for in a girl in the villa, he said he wanted someone who 'is beautiful on the inside and out, looks after themselves and is healthy'. Tyrique shot to fame on the 2023 series with his romance with Ella being heavily tested with some dramatic ups and downs. They exited the villa together, but shortly after announced they'd split in November 2023, before trying to give it another go. But, in February 2024, MailOnline exclusively revealed Ella and Tyrique had parted ways permanently - after six months as a couple. A source told MailOnline: 'Ella and Tyrique have decided it's time to go their separate ways. 'They have such love for each other, but they often struggle to get along and as viewers saw in the villa, they're always arguing.' Tyrique and Ella exited the villa together, but shortly after announced they'd split in November 2023, before trying to give it another go, before parting ways permanently in February last year (pictured in September 2023) Meanwhile, Dejon is not the only footballing connection in the upcoming series, as fans of the lower leagues may have spotted a star dubbed 'The Surrey Zidane'. Harry Cooksley, 29, is a midfielder for Southern League Premier South side Farnham Town, while also working as a gold trader and model. But more interestingly, his pastimes include being a body double for Arsenal and England star Declan Rice. Harry revealed: 'So when he does a shoot, any body close ups will actually be me.
