'It's with great sadness we have to post the passing of Wayne Lewis on June 5, 2025,' Atlantic Starr wrote on Facebook. 'Please keep the family in your prayers and respect their privacy #waynelewis #restinpeace #flyhigh Sunrise 4/13/1957 Sunset 6/5/2025 #restinpeaceWayne.'
Lewis served as a vocalist and keyboardist for Atlantic Starr, which he co-founded in 1976 in White Plains, N.Y., alongside his brothers David Lewis (vocals, guitar) and Jonathan Lewis (keyboards, trombone), as well as drummer Porter Carroll Jr., bassist Clifford Archer and percussionist-flutist Joseph Phillips.
Other early members included lead singer Sharon Bryant, trumpeter William Sudderth III and saxophonist Damon Rentie. Bryant and Rentie were later replaced by Barbara Weathers and Koran Daniels, respectively.
Atlantic Starr became a fixture in R&B throughout the late 1970s and 1980s. The group signed with A&M Records (and later to Warner Bros. Records, among other labels), releasing their self-titled debut album in 1978, followed by their sophomore effort, Straight to the Point, the next year.
The band achieved its first top 10 hit on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart with 'Circles' (No. 2) from the 1982 album Brilliance. Their biggest commercial success came in 1987 when 'Always,' from 1986's All in the Name of Love, reached No. 1 on both the Billboard Hot 100 chart and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs.
Atlantic Starr earned a total of three top 10 hits on the Hot 100 and 11 top 10s on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. 'My First Love' in 1989 was their only other No. 1 on the latter chart.
In recent years, Atlantic Starr continued to perform with Lewis and current members Jonathan Lewis, Melessa Pierce and Shammah Carter. The group's most recent album, Metamorphosis, was released in 2017.
Following the announcement of Lewis' death, fans flooded social media with heartfelt tributes and condolences.
'His band gave my generation so much listening pleasure,' one fan wrote. Another shared, 'Nooooo I am devastated seeing this. My condolences to all family and friends.' A third commenter added, 'A great songwriter. Atlantic Starr was better once he became leader. He will be missed.'

Kaytranada & Justice Are Going on an Arena Tour This Fall: Here Are the Dates

Kaytranada and Justice are going on a co-headlining North American arena tour this fall. The 13-show run will launch on Oct. 17 in Vancouver, B.C., then hits arenas across the U.S. until it wraps in Miami, Fla., on Nov. 16. The run includes one currently unannounced show that's blurred out on the poster and is happening between an Oct. 22 in Oakland and an Oct. 28 show in San Diego. (One is tempted to speculate that this show will be in Los Angeles.) The Tame Impala collab from the duo's 2024 album Hyperdrama won the Grammy for best dance/electronic recording and gave Justice its first ever radio No. 1 in February. On July 16, Justice also released a remix package of 'Mannequin Love,' also from Hyperdrama, with fresh edits by The Dare, Braxe & Falcon and Hudson Mohawke. This autumn tour falls into the timeline Justice told Billboard about in March, when the duo's Gaspard Augé said the French duo would likely tour the lauded show debuted at Coachella 2024 this December. Following this, added Xavier de Rosnay, they'll likely 'pick a date and then dismantle everything' related to the live production 'so that there can't even be the temptation of saying yes to anything else.' Both artists also have plenty of solo tour dates on the calendar ahead of this fall run. Kaytranada's upcoming schedule including standalone shows and festival sets at events including HARD Summer and Breakaway Carolina and Justice's summer schedule including festivals primarily in Europe and Australia. Tickets for the run go on sale on Friday, July 25. ‘KPop Demon Hunters' Tops the Billboard 100 With Huntr/x's ‘Golden'

KPop Demon Hunters has swiftly become one of the most delightful and empowering surprises of the year in animation. Now that the Netflix and Sony Animation-certified banger is taking over the world, it only makes sense for its catchy music to reach greater heights. Billboard just announced that 'Golden' from KPop Demon Hunters' hit soundtrack has reached #1 on the charts. The Huntr/x track for a while there was only slightly behind the Saja Boys' 'Your Idol' from the same soundtrack—but just like in the film, the kick-ass trio overcame the bad guys and surpassed them to hit the top of the charts. So yeah, that Honmoon? Sealed. As per Billboard, 'Golden' is the ninth song from the Korean pop genre to dominate the Hot 100. Additionally, it's also the most recent No. 1 performed by a fictional ensemble from a film, the last being Encanto's viral 'We Don't Talk About Bruno,' which enjoyed a five-week stint at the coveted spot in February and March 2022. And what's even cooler: this is the first all-women group to lead the charts since Destiny's Child in 2001. Huntr/x are those girls. Recently Stephen Kirk and Jenna Andrews, a songwriting duo that contributed to KPop Demon Hunters, talked to the Hollywood Reporter about the film's success: 'I certainly had no expectation. I was just like, I love K-pop, this sounds like a fire idea, let's just see where it goes. And then for it to come out, go number one on Netflix, and then [have] the soundtrack explode, it's just such a blessing,' shared Kirk. Andrews added, 'I mean, the truth is, most labels would [not be interested in] soundtracks. Because soundtracks just don't really stream, they don't really go; it's about the movie, and they go away, right?' she said. 'I think with this particular one, because it was K-pop, I think we both thought it probably will do something, but to this extent, no. Definitely not.' KPop Demon Hunters is now streaming on Netflix. Want more io9 news?
