Barely half of this generation has seen ‘Jaws,' as Spielberg classic celebrates 50 years
Their cinema knowledge bites!
Barely half of Gen Z has seen the original summer blockbuster 'Jaws' compared to nearly 90% of people who came of age when the classic flick hit the silver screen.
Steven Spielberg's pulse-pounding shark thriller — which first struck fear into the hearts of beachgoers exactly 50 years ago Friday — has only been viewed by 53% of 18- to 29-year-olds, according to a jaw-dropping new Gallup poll.
By contrast, 88% of people over 65 years old have sunk their teeth into the flick, which held the No. 1 box office spot for 14 weeks and was the first film ever to rake in $100 million.

Pollsters cited no specific reason for why the generation that brought you the word 'cringe,' Crocs-as-fashion and TikTok activism wasn't hip to the movie — but its 2 hour, 10 minute running time might be a hint.
Overall, 91% of people ages 50 to 64 and 78% of 30-to-49-year-olds reported seeing the spine-tingling flick, which centers on a massive man-eater that unleashes chaos on Long Island beach town.
When the movie was released on June 20, 1975, it made giant waves in the US with viewers saying it scared them away from the water and increased their fear of sharks.
The film was such a hit with young people at the time, a whopping 40% of 18-to-29-year-olds said they'd seen it by the end of summer 1975, according to a Gallup poll taken that year.
3 A total of 78% of Americans reported seeing 'Jaws' as of May 2025.

At the time, 18% of viewers called it 'the most frightening movie' they had ever seen and 35% said the movie increased their fear of swimming in the ocean, according to the poll.
3 The classic movie stoked fears about sharks and swimming in the ocean.
AP
The more recent poll, conducted in May ahead of the movie's anniversary, notes a total of 78% of all US adults have seen 'Jaws.'
It's ultimately not clear if a 53% viewership among Gen Z adults is high or low for a 50-year-old film without more cinema data to compare it to, pollsters said.

TikTok's Owner Wanted to Publish Books. Not Anymore.
When 8th Note Press launched in the summer of 2023, the small publisher had a big advantage over other new presses. It was started by the Chinese technology company ByteDance, the owner of TikTok, the wildly popular social media platform where viral endorsements can transform books into best sellers overnight. That was not enough, it seems, to build a successful publishing business. In late May, 8th Note Press began informing writers that it was shutting down and returning publication rights to the authors. News of the press's demise, which was reported earlier by the The Bookseller, came as a shock to authors who were swayed by the possibility that 8th Note could help engineer best sellers with elaborate marketing campaigns on TikTok. Instead, 8th Note has started taking down digital editions of their books, effectively unpublishing them. The literary agent Mark Gottlieb, who sold the debut novel 'To Have and Have More' to 8th Note, said the company was doing 'irreparable damage' to its authors by shutting down so haphazardly. While publishing imprints frequently come and go, the books and authors they publish are usually moved elsewhere within the parent company, rather than being taken out of circulation entirely. If a book is published then quickly disappears, it can be difficult to resell it to another publisher, Gottlieb said. 'They're wrecking careers in the process of doing this,' he said of 8th Note. 'If you're an author and this is your first book, what the history is going to show is that your book published and quickly went out of print.' 8th Note's precipitous fall was surprising, given its parent company's vast resources and reach. Just last year, the press seemed poised to expand. Last October, its executives announced a partnership with the publisher Zando to put out print editions of its books and distribute them to physical bookstores. The plan was to release 10 to 15 titles a year, with a focus on romance, romantasy and young adult fiction. Later, the imprint indicated to agents that it was expanding into science fiction and fantasy. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

Why Mckenna Grace and Mason Thames Are Sparking Dating Rumors in NYC
The Handmaid Tales' Mckenna Grace, 18, and How to Train Your Dragon's Mason Thames, 17, are playing love interests in the film adaptation of Colleen Hoover's Regretting You, but their off-camera rapport is sparking romantic rumors, too. Fans first questioned whether they could be dating when a TikTok of them sharing a playful staged kiss went viral in April 2025. Since then, they've been seen spending time together off set. On June 14, they were even photographed walking hand-in-hand in New York City. Although neither actor has explicitly confirmed they're romantically involved, they've spoken about the experience of working together and hanging out outside of work. Thames, in particular, had glowing things to say about his co-star: 'She is one of the most driven people I've ever met in my life,' he told Seventeen in June 2025. 'Every day I'm on set with her, I just want to be as good as Mckenna. She's such a sweet person, and getting to do this movie with her is so cool.' Here's a full breakdown of their relationship history so far: Grace and Thames made their first public appearance together at Netflix's Incoming House Party event. At the time, news had just surfaced that they would co-star in Regretting You. On April 7, Grace shared a TikTok clip of herself and Thames lip-syncing to a well-known 500 Days of Summer audio. The video ends with the two leaning in for a kiss before falling out of frame. Commenters quickly jumped to conclusions, wondering if the clip was a soft launch of a real-life romance or simply promotion for their film. On April 18, the two were spotted together at the Miami Heat vs. Atlanta Hawks NBA game at State Farm Arena. On May 5, Grace posted an Instagram carousel that included a photo of her and Thames. 'This is my jam!!🍓🎶🦈💕🎬,' she captioned it. In a June 13 interview with Seventeen, Thames addressed the viral kissing TikTok, saying, 'I didn't really know what to expect, but it was really funny. I had a lot of friends text me. It was hilarious.' He added it was Grace's idea: 'She was like, 'This is a TikTok—do you wanna do it?' And I was like 'Yeah, let's!' And we posted it, and then…Jesus.' While he didn't confirm or deny a romance, he acknowledged that the fan speculation about his love life has been strange to take in. 'I've always sort of been off the internet,' he said. 'I've always kind of kept everything to myself and been very personal. Having people speculate so much, especially having mutual friends texting me and asking…it's wild. I'm still not used to it.' He spoke a little about his adventures with Grace outside of work though, noting they once visited an aquarium. 'She has an aquarium playlist in her AirPods,' he recalled. 'So she had one in her ear, and I had one in mine while we looked at sharks.' He said that he hopes Grace has learned from his humor: 'I'd like to think I'm a funny person,' he said. 'So, you know, I'd like to think I make her funnier. Even though honestly, Mckenna is one of the funniest people I've ever met. She'll just says some stuff, and it catches me so off guard.' On June 14, Grace and Thames were photographed walking hand-in-hand through Soho in New York City, just as How to Train Your Dragon opened in theaters. The sighting further fueled dating rumors:
