Impaired driving checkpoint in Shasta County results in zero DUI arrests

According to SCSO, the deputy conducted this checkpoint in an effort to reduce the number of impaired drivers on the road. Due to the checkpoint, about 544 vehicles were checked.
SCSO said that DUI Saturation Patrols were also conducted in the surrounding area which led to six traffic stops being made,11 were evaluated for DUI, and two were cited for other violations. No DUI arrest was made during the checkpoint.
'The Shasta County Sheriff's Office would like to remind the public that impaired driving is not just from alcohol. Some prescription medications and over-the-counter medications can interfere with your ability to safely operate a motor vehicle and ultimately result in a DUI,' said SCSO. 'Additionally, while medicinal and recreational marijuana use is legal to use and possess in the State of California, driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal.'

SCSO stated that if you plan to drink, use cannabis, or take any medications that can have an impact on your ability to drive just stay home. Drivers charged with a first-time DUI can face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties as well as have their license suspended.
'The Shasta County Sheriff's Office reminds citizens to always report suspected impaired drivers on the road,' according to SCSO. 'The Shasta County Sheriff's Office is committed to reducing the number of dangerous and drunk drivers on the road, and these checkpoints are just one of the ways we are working to keep Shasta County safe.'
SCSO stated that the funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Highway Patrol Cannabis Tax Fund Grant Program.

A man who took a taxi to a mountain trailhead after a car crash has been missing for two weeks, California police say. Lesner Noe Velasquez Cardenas, 21, 'was last seen by a taxi cab driver on Thursday, May 29, 2025, where he was dropped off at a trailhead to Avalanche Gulch on Mount Shasta,' the Redding Police Department said in a June 10 Facebook post. Deputies learned Cardenas had in fact returned home after the crash but went missing sometime later, according to police. Police said they took over the investigation June 4. Detectives learned a cab picked up Cardenas near a Wells Fargo bank about 2 miles from his apartment shortly before 2:30 p.m. on May 29, police said. After confirming Cardenas' identity, the cab driver told detectives he took him 'to Mt. Shasta where he dropped him off at the trailhead to Avalanche Gulch,' police said. Cardenas had backpacking gear and 'made statements about trying to beat a friend's time to complete a hike,' according to police. At the time of his disappearance, Cardenas had a cellphone 'but it has not been in service since' the afternoon he disappeared, police said. Working with the Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office's search and rescue team, police said they scoured the area June 6 and 7. The California Highway Patrol also searched by air, police said. Despite search efforts, Cardenas was not found, according to police. Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 530-225-4200. Redding is about a 160-mile drive north from Sacramento.

‘We just want to know that she's safe' — Mother of missing West Jordan teen speaks out
WEST JORDAN, Utah (ABC4) — The mother of the has spoken out about her worries about her daughter's disappearance. Sophia Rojas, 15, was last seen on June 3, and she has had no contact with her friends or family since, according to West Jordan police. She was last seen wearing a grey suit and pants. Police believe that she may be with an adult, and she may be lying about her age. PREVIOUS COVERAGE: Family, police seeking information on missing 15-year-old girl from West Jordan Her mother, Porscha Chavez, spoke to about her daughter's disappearance. 'She took off in the middle of the night, and I haven't heard from her or seen her since,' she said. Chavez told that Sophia left a note, but that the first sentence of the note didn't sound like her. The note said, 'Don't jump into getting the police involved.' The rest of the note said that she had a place to stay, not to worry about her, and not to be mad, that she would be back eventually. Chavez believes that she is with an adult because she left in the middle of the night on a school night and none of her usual circle of friends have heard from her. Sophia also has a history of talking to adults online and lying about her age, Chavez said. Chavez took Sophia's phone away in February for that reason. 'I do feel like she's possibly been groomed. I think that she feels like it's not gonna happen to her, and that she'll be okay, and she has the teenager mindset of nothing's gonna happen to her and she knows everything and she's fine,' she said. Chavez told that she is able to see that Sophia has a different phone signed into her Google account, and Chavez does not know where that phone came from. She is able to see that it is logged in, but she cannot see its location. 'Come home,' she said. 'We just want to know that she's safe, and we want her back home safely.' Man arrested for drunk driving, Stafford deputies say
STAFFORD COUNTY, Va. () — Deputies said a man was arrested for drunk driving. The Stafford County Sheriff's Office (SCSO) said on June 10 at around 10:45 p.m., deputies were at the intersection of Warrenton Road and Cambridge Street waiting for a red light. While they were waiting in a clearly marked cruiser, a Kia ran the red light. Deputies conducted a traffic stop on the Kia. The 51-year-old man showed signs of intoxication, SCSO said. At least one person hurt in crash on Fairfax County Parkway The deputy asked the driver how much he had drunk, and he said they had two beers. He then admitted to having four beers, SCSO said. Deputies detained the driver and found cans of empty beer in their car. He was charged with driving under the influence with a blood alcohol content between 0.15 and 0.2, drinking while driving and failure to obey a traffic light.
