Mailbox break-ins and thefts prompt arrest of two suspects in Rocklin
( — The Rocklin Police Department posted a public service announcement on Monday about mailbox break-ins and mail theft, and two days later, on Wednesday, officers were alerted through a CCTV alarm monitoring. According to RPD, the CCTV alerted that the suspects were breaking into the cluster mailboxes at an apartment complex in Rocklin. Officers responded to the scene and found the suspect vehicle leaving the scene and detain two people. New literacy pack aims to boost reading skills for students across California
( — State Superintendent Tony Thurmond and Governor Gavin Newsom announced on Tuesday the release of the California Literacy-Biliteracy Professional Learning Pack. California Department of Education stated that this would be a comprehensive suite of resources designed to improve literacy instruction and support educators across the state in improving student outcomes, especially for younger readers. The Literacy Roadmap highlights our multifaceted approach to improving literacy for California's students, including current and proposed initiatives,' Governor Newsom said. 'When added to our other investments in literacy coaches and reading specialists at high-needs schools and professional development for teachers, we are doubling down on our commitment to ensure no student falls behind in their reading.' The new Professional Learning Pack includes two crucial literacy guidance documents, CDE stated. The first is set to be the California Literacy Roadmap's Literacy Content Blocks for English-Medium Classrooms, which is focused on transitional Kindergarten through Grade Five. The roadmap provides instructional recommendations that educators can use to support students as they develop across all areas of literacy and bitliteracy, according to Newsom. The blocks will reflect an intentional approach to literacy that will promote sequenced initial instruction, appropriate practice and reinforcement, intervention as necessary, and meaningful application in English language arts. 'Literacy is foundational to lifelong learning and academic success,' said Superintendent Thurmond. 'With this release, California takes a significant step forward in providing educators with the tools they need to foster strong literacy and biliteracy development from the earliest years of learning as we move the needle on student achievement, particularly for our youngest readers.' The second document is Preschool through Third Grade Learning Progressions for Language and Literacy Development, which will outline key developmental milestones and offer examples of play-based, inquiry-based instruction to support early literacy in both English and students' home languages, according to CDE. 'In California, we're focused on an approach to literacy that supports evidence-based instruction and high-quality professional learning,' said State Board of Education President Linda Darling-Hammond. 'The Literacy Roadmap and the Literacy Learning Progressions provide teachers with key resources and tools they can use to support every child in learning to read with comprehension, write with expression, and explore the world of books with excitement.' Cervantes' toxicology report shows no measurable amount of drugs, alcohol
( — The toxicology results for Senator Sabrina Cervantes (D-Riverside) were 'negative for any measurable amount of alcohol or drugs,' according to the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office. Video Above: State Senator Sabrina Cervantes speaks out on DUI allegations Cervantes was cited in Sacramento last Monday for suspicion of DUI after being involved in a car crash. 'We have reviewed all the submitted evidence, including police reports, witness statements, and laboratory results,' office officials said. ' Based on our ethical duty and the burden of proof in a criminal trial, the Sacramento County DA's Office declines to file any charges in this case.' Cervantes made a statement after the allegations, claiming her innocence and accusing Sacramento Police Department officers of accosting her. The Public Information Officer for SPD claims there were no indications Cervantes was accosted after reviewing officers' body camera footage. In a statement released by SPD, officials claim that Cervantes declined to perform a Standardized Field Sobriety Tests, after officers observed signs of intoxication from the senator. State launches new, interactive tool that ranks heat in every ZIP code
( — California has launched a new online tool that helps people understand the severity of heat waves in their area and provides them with resources to hopefully prevent heat-related illness. Gov. Gavin Newsom announced CalHeatScore on Thursday, saying it's the first heat-ranking tool in the nation and one of the only in the world. Defense Intelligence Agency IT Specialist arrested for allegedly sharing classified information It works by updating a daily heat score based on forecasting for every ZIP code in the state. The area gets a score of 0-4, zero being the lowest heat threat and four being the highest. Each ZIP code is also given information about its most vulnerable populations based on demographics, like the elderly and children. There are also resources for people, like tips for spotting the signs of heat-related illness and a list of the cooling centers closest to where you're at. CalHeatScore was developed by the California Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment. Newsom said the tool comes at a critical time, after the Trump Administration cut some funding for the National Weather Service at the beginning of the year. The tool also comes following a 2021 recommendation from the California Department of Insurance's Climate Insurance Workgroup that the state create a platform like this. In addition to CalHeatScore, Newsom also announced more than $32 million in funding for 47 communities across the state to help with extreme heat mitigation efforts.
