Ukrainian plot to assassinate Russian defense industry leader derailed
In a statement on Tuesday, the FSB said that a Russian national had made contact with a representative of an unnamed pro-Ukrainian terrorist group via Telegram. He was ordered to travel to Bryansk Region which borders Ukraine, to recover a drone-dropped cache containing firearms and explosives, the agency said.
The weapons were intended for use in an assassination attempt on the head of a defense industrial facility in Belgorod, the FSB said. The suspect is now charged with high treason and faces up to life in prison.
The FSB also released a video in which the man confesses that since June 2024, while serving with Russian forces on the conflict frontline in Ukraine's Kharkov Region, he relayed to Kiev data on the whereabouts of Russian army personnel and hardware as well as positions of electronic warfare and air defense systems.
In addition, he confessed to coordinating Ukrainian missile and artillery attacks and transmitting photographs and contact information of Russian military personnel.
The footage released by the FSB also shows the agency's operatives driving up to the suspect in a minivan in a rural area. Within moments, the man, who is carrying a large backpack, is seen being pinned to the ground.
Another part of the video shows a forest stash containing what appears to be explosives and a handgun.
Russian authorities have accused Ukraine of organizing multiple sabotage and assassination attempts on Russian territory in recent months, including attacks targeting military commanders and other high-profile figures.

Trump envoy arrives in Moscow (VIDEO)
US President Donald Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, arrived in Moscow early on Wednesday morning. He is expected to discuss the settlement of the Ukraine conflict with senior Russian officials. Witkoff's plane landed at Vnukovo Airport, where he was welcomed by presidential investment envoy Kirill Dmitriev, who is also the CEO of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF). The two were later seen strolling in Zaryadye Park in central Moscow near the Kremlin. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov earlier said that a face-to-face meeting between Witkoff and Russian President Vladimir Putin could not be ruled out. Witkoff arrived in Moscow days after Trump threatened to impose sanctions on Russia unless significant progress is made in the settlement process. The US president signaled that the restrictions could include 100% tariffs and secondary sanctions targeting Russia's trade partners, particularly in the oil sector. Since Trump's inauguration, Witkoff has held several rounds of negotiations with Russia. His last visit to the country took place in late April. The talks revolved around the Ukraine conflict, US-Russia prisoner swaps, and bilateral ties. On Monday, Ukrainian media reported that Witkoff's visit to Moscow would coincide with talks between US Special Envoy for Ukraine Keith Kellogg and officials in Kiev. US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker has expressed hope that the visit would pave the way for 'a breakthrough' in negotiations over Ukraine. As Trump has repeatedly pushed Russia and Ukraine to work out a peace deal, the countries held three rounds of direct talks in Istanbul in May, June, and late July. While the sides have failed to reach a breakthrough, they agreed to several major prisoner swaps. Russia insists that a sustainable peace deal must include Ukraine's commitment to stay out of NATO, demilitarization, and the recognition of the new territorial reality on the ground. Kiev has rejected the terms.

Trump doubles US tariffs on India over Russian oil
The US will be imposing an additional 25% tariff on Indian imports, the White House has said, pointing to the nation's continued purchase of Russian oil. The move would bring the total levy on one of America's key trade partners to 50%. President Donald Trump had previously accused New Delhi of 'financing' the Ukraine conflict through oil purchases from Russia, vowing to slap the South Asian nation with additional penalties for its defense and trade ties with Moscow, on top of the 25% tariff he imposed last week. 'I find that the Government of India is currently directly or indirectly importing Russian Federation oil,' Trump said in the executive order published by the White House on Wednesday. According to the document, the tariff is to come into force 21 days from its publication, i.e. in late August. The Indian Foreign Ministry slammed the move, calling it 'unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable.' India's trade with Rusia is based on 'market factors' and aimed at ensuring the nation's energy security, it said. New Delhi 'will take all actions necessary to protect its national interests,' the statement warned. Last week, Trump criticized India's economic ties with Russia. Moscow and New Delhi 'can take their dead economies down together, for all I care,' he wrote in a post on Truth Social, claiming that the US was doing 'very little business with India.' He went on to describe the Asian nation's tariffs on foreign goods as 'too high.' India is America's tenth biggest trade partner. In responding to America's threats to impose secondary sanctions on Russia's trade partners, including India, China and Brazil, Moscow stated that it believes 'sovereign states should have, and do have, the right to choose their own trade partners,' as well as to independently determine which avenues of cooperation best serve their national interests.

Trump comments on ‘very good' Putin-Witkoff talks
A potential meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukraine's Vladimir Zelensky could happen 'very soon,' US President Donald Trump has claimed. Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Wednesday, hours after US special envoy Steve Witkoff's talks with Putin, Trump was asked to comment on a potential summit between the two leaders. 'There is a very good prospect that they will, and we haven't determined where, but we had some very good talks with President Putin today,' Trump said. 'There is a good chance there could be a meeting very soon.' When asked how close a peace deal could be, he declined to speculate. 'I don't want to say, I've been disappointed before' the US president said.
