MANILA, July 16 (Bernama-PNA) -- The Philippine government has appealed to foreign authorities for assistance in rescuing Filipinos believed to be trapped and forced to work in illegal call centres across mainland South-East Asia, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) had announced.
According to the Philippine News Agency (PNA), the agency said it continues to receive reports of alleged Filipino human trafficking victims forced to work in scam hubs.
"In response, the DFA works with its Foreign Service Posts, especially in Mainland Southeast Asia (Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, and Cambodia), to persistently devote efforts and resources in extending all possible assistance to our Filipinos in distress, while requesting the authorities of the host countries for their invaluable cooperation,' it said.
The agency has yet to provide specific details regarding the number of distressed Filipinos or the reports it has received so far.
It, however, assured the public that Manila, in coordination with the Filipinos' host countries, is "committed to the rescue and repatriation of all Filipino trafficking victims that are working in illegal call centres in the region.' - Bernama-PNA

Over 50% of drug abuse cases in Perak involve youths

IPOH: A staggering 51.5% of drug abuse cases recorded in Perak last year involved youths aged between 15 and 39, according to the Malaysian Drug Prevention Association (PEMADAM). Perak PEMADAM chairman Mohd Azlan Helmi revealed that out of 14,534 reported cases, 7,488 involved young individuals, calling the trend alarming. He stressed the need for stronger preventive measures, including community involvement. 'To prevent the situation from worsening, all parties, including the community, must play their part,' he said after officiating the PEMADAM Mini Carnival and flagging off the Perak PEMADAM Run and Explorace 2025 at Polo Ground. The event drew over 1,500 participants. PEMADAM has also enlisted 150 student volunteers to combat drug abuse in higher education institutions. 'These young people serve as awareness agents on campuses, helping spread anti-drug messages effectively,' Mohd Azlan added. The association has launched an official website to provide information and facilitate online volunteer registrations. - Bernama

Civil Servants Must Set Good Example, Refrain From Joining Public Rallies

MACHANG, July 26 (Bernama) -- Civil servants must set a good example by refraining from participating in any assemblies organised by the public, said Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar. He said if any civil servant is found to have joined such gatherings, their respective department heads may take further action as it would constitute a breach of established rules. 'Such assemblies actually violate the code of conduct and discipline for civil servants. 'As public servants, we are supposed to set a good example, and I believe civil servants' involvement in these events does not serve any benefit,' he said after launching the Attorney-General's Chambers' Santuni MADANI programme at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Pulai Chondong here today. Mohd Dusuki also handed over cash aid of RM3,000 and a television set to the school, as well as batik cloths and water bottles to over 1,000 villagers and students. The AGC had issued a statement explaining that civil servants are subject to a specific directive from the Chief Secretary to the Government prohibiting their participation in any public assemblies. Meanwhile, on the sentence handed down to motoring influencer Tengku Nizaruddin Tengku Zainudin and his brother Tengku Abdul Aziz yesterday, Mohd Dusuki said the AGC would look into the matter. 'I cannot comment at this time as it falls under the jurisdiction of the court. However, we will review the matter,' he said. -- BERNAMA

Base jump mishap injures one in Kuantan

KUANTAN: A Base jumper was injured while two others escaped unhurt after veering off course during the Base Jump Extreme Challenge held in conjunction with Pesta Kuantan 188 here on Friday (July 25). Acting district police chief Supt Mohd Adli Mat Daud said in the 5 pm incident, Zainal Chik, 62, crashed-landed on a concrete surface near the Kuantan 188 tower. "The jumper was taken to Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital and is currently in stable condition,' he said in a statement on Saturday (July 26). He said an Australian participant, Andrew Morcombe, 35, landed in a tree, while a local participant, Manan Mahusin, 64, landed in a river. Both were unharmed. "The organisers and on-site safety personnel responded swiftly to assist the participants,' he added. Mohd Adli said preliminary investigations indicated that the incident was likely caused by strong winds and technical factors during the landing process. The event, involving 17 participants from Malaysia and abroad, was part of this year's Pesta Kuantan 188 festivities.- Bernama
