Sugababes star's footballer ex in court after allegedly beating singer

Daily Mirror6 days ago

Sugababes star Keisha Buchanan's footballer ex-boyfriend appeared in court today after he allegedly assaulted the singer on three occasions. He is also accused of coercive and controlling behaviour over an alleged ten-year campaign of harassment.
Taiwo Leo Atieno, 39, has been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm between January 2012 and January 2015, controlling and coercive behaviour between December 2015 and May 2018, harassment between January 2021 and December last year, and an an alleged breach of a non-molestation order.
The Brixton-born professional footballer, who has made appearances for Kenya in the qualifiers for the World Cup and African Club of Nations, appeared via video link this morning from HMP Wormwood Scrubs wearing a suit and tie.
He was not asked to enter pleas and Judge Ian Bourne KC granted his release from prison on conditional bail during the Harrow Crown Court case sitting at Southwark on Thursday.
Singer Buchanan, 40, dated the former Luton Town player between 2015 and 2018 and went to the police about his alleged "course of conduct over a ten-year period" in December 2024.
His bail conditions include that he must surrender his passport by Monday afternoon.
The judge said: "There must not be any contact either directly or indirectly with the complainant Keisha Buchanan. That means any form of contact, whether it be by email or other sort of social media messaging system - any contact at all".
Julian Malins KC, defending, said his client "fully understands it, and assures the court through us that he will abide by that".
Atieno was also told not to apply for international travel or to enter the London Borough of Barnet.
He is due to enter pleas on August 22 this year and his trial is set for April 13 2026.
A court heard last month that Atieno is said to have assaulted Buchanan on three occasions, one so severely that it left her requiring physiotherapy treatment. One incident saw Buchanan suffer a sharp pain to her lower back – which she described as feeling as though she had been kicked.
The footballer is also accused of controlling her letters, her finances, what the singer ate and how she presented herself to people outside of the home. He also stands accused of harassing her after she called off their relationship and breached a court order which was put in place to prevent him from contacting her.
During a hearing at Willesden Magistrates' Court in May, Prosecutor Edward Kalber said: "The offending is severe in its nature and has caused problems for the defendant, both psychological and physical."
He added: "The complainant states that while she lived with the defendant, she wasn't allowed to open her own letters or sort out her finances.
"The complainant would have to ask for money whenever she wanted it." It was later heard that Atieno would get frustrated if Buchanan wore certain things. Kalber continued: "The defendant would get annoyed if the complainant wore red lipstick. He berated her and called her trashy, and told her she looked like a prostitute whenever she wore this.
"This then fed into her dietary issues, due to the defendant controlling what she was allowed to eat." The footballer is also accused of not allowing Keisha to watch TV.
Two alleged assaults on Buchanan took place in the defendant's bedroom, with another taking place in the front room of the property. He allegedly grabbed her around the neck, punched her on the arm and then struck her back.
One alleged attack left her experiencing a sharp pain which felt like a kick to her lower back, and she later required physiotherapy due to the alleged incident. Buchanan also claims that Atieno controlled her use of the shower while the pair were living together and she was only allowed to go to the gym at "certain times".
Despite Buchanan blocking Atieno after they split, it's claimed he later sent her emails and is accused of harassment over the course of three years. He also allegedly demanded £25,000 from the musician.
The footballer of Kennington, southwest London, has been remanded in custody and previously indicated not guilty pleas to all four charges made against him.

Speaking to The Sun this week about the track, she explained: 'It's the need of it happening right now, in this moment. It's the idea that I want it on right now or I don't want to hear about it. It's that simple. 'I think that comes from the excitement of the song. I wanted it to feel instant and to have an impact. It is a brave, straight-up demand that you can use in any way you want.' Heat is expected to feature on her upcoming, still untitled, fourth album, which will be her first album release since her 2023 You & I. Rita has recently been supporting Kylie for the first leg of her tour after she previously revealed that Kylie's 2023 mega-hit from Tension, Padam Padam was nearly given to her. The synth-pop banger - penned by Norwegian singer-songwriter Ina Wroldsen and producer Lostboy - was a viral hit for Kylie. But several artists were asked if they wanted to record it, including the Anywhere singer, because they didn't feel it was a Kylie song. Rita began performing as the support act for Kylie's Tension Tour in April at Atlanta's State Farm Arena. Gushing about the gig afterwards, she said: 'First night of the tour, wow the reception was incredible and I'm so grateful for this opportunity to connect with North America. It feels like such a huge compliment to open up for such an icon.'

Sugababes' Keisha Buchanan steps out with bandmates Mutya Buena and Siobhán Donaghy for ELLE UK's Celebration of Women In Music after ex appeared in court

Keisha Buchanan stepped out with her Sugababes bandmates on Tuesday for ELLE UK's Celebration of Women In Music. The girlband singer, 40, headed to the event, which was held in London in partnership with Fendi, with Mutya Buena and Siobhán Donaghy. Keisha looked effortlessly chic as she arrived in a bright red figure-hugging short-sleeved Fendi dress which reached down to her knees. She paired the dress with black stilettos and small oval sunglasses as she posed with Mutya and Siobhán, as well as stars Jamelia and Rita Ora. Keisha's appearance comes just days after her footballer ex-boyfriend appeared in court ahead of a trial next year over allegations he assaulted, harassed and controlled her. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Taiwo Leo Atieno, 39 – who once played for Luton Town and the Kenyan national team – is accused of repeatedly assaulting the chart-topping star, banning her from wearing red lipstick, and controlling her every move, from what she ate to when she could shower. The alleged abuse, said to have occurred between 2015 and 2018, included three physical assaults, one of which left Buchanan in so much pain she required physiotherapy. The singer, now 40, told police the ex-pro striker also dictated her finances, her diet, her personal grooming, and even her TV choices – in what prosecutors described as an 'oppressive and controlling relationship'. Last week, at a preliminary hearing at Southwark Crown Court, Atieno was granted bail under strict conditions ahead of a five-day trial set to start on April 13 next year. Appearing via videolink from HMP Wormwood Scrubs, he spoke only to confirm he understood the conditions of bail. Atieno must surrender his passport, abide by a strict curfew and live at his home address until his trial. He is also forbidden from leaving England and Wales, applying for any travel documents, or having any contact whatsoever with Ms Buchanan — including via email or social media. 'The complainant states that while she lived with the defendant she wasn't allowed to open her own letters or sort out her finances. 'The complainant would have to ask for money whenever she wanted it. 'The defendant would get annoyed if the complainant wore red lipstick. He berated her and called her trashy, and told her she looked like a prostitute whenever she wore this.' Mr Kalber added: 'This then fed into her dietary issues, due to the defendant controlling what she was allowed to eat.' Atieno allegedly carried out three assaults on Ms Buchanan, two in the defendant's bedroom and one in the front room. One assault allegedly saw Ms Buchanan experience a sharp pain in her lower back, which she described as feeling like a kick. The singer had to undergo physiotherapy as a result of the abuse, it is alleged. The singer claims Atieno controlled her use of the shower while they were living together and only allowed her to use the gym 'at certain times', the court heard. After being blocked from contacting her in any way, the footballer allegedly sent Ms Buchanan emails, and is accused of harassment over the course of three years.

An online blurb for his latest tour reads: "In 2023, as his triumphant American Utopia era came to a close after morphing from an album and tour into an acclaimed Broadway show and then a Spike Lee-directed HBO film, David Byrne began jotting down the occasional groove, chord or melody. It had been a minute." The world tour comes as the iconic musician releases his first new album since 2018, titled Who is the Sky? The record was produced by Grammy-winning Kid Harpoon, who has worked with industry icons including Harry Styles and Miley Cyrus. Meanwhile members of New York-based chamber ensemble Ghost Train Orchestra helped arrange 12 tracks on the album. Byrne will be in Glasgow next year on Friday 6 March and Saturday 7 March.
