Zone IV leads in preventive actions in reducing crime rate
Nagpur: The highest number of crucial preventive actions initiated against the goons seemed to have gone a long way in reducing the crime rate in Zone IV division, which is known for crime-prone pockets and sensitive slums. The zone, under

, witnessed a significant fall in serious crime heads, including murder, compared to last year.
By mid-April 2025, there was a noticeable increase in the actions under section 126 of BNSS (erstwhile Criminal Procedure Code 107), invoked mostly against first-timers in crime, compared to statistics from the first four months of the previous year. While there were 3,163 actions under
BNSS 126
this year in the first four-and-a-half months, there were 2,770 last year. In BNSS 126, Zone IV's statistics were the highest with 822 cases, followed by Zone V with 813.
After the encouraging statistics of BNSS 126, there was a gloomy fall in the statistics under the more serious BNSS 129 (CrPC 110), which are invoked mostly against hardened criminals to keep them under bond for up to two years. This year, there were around 635 cases under BNSS 129 till mid-April. It was 875 last year in the same period. Zone IV invoked BNSS 129 against the highest number, 178, followed by Zone V with 158.

Madras HC refuses to quash police notice issued to BJP leader H Raja
CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has refused to quash a notice issued to senior BJP leader H Raja by the Madurai police summoning him for investigations regarding a case registered against him for making alleged hate speech in connection with the Thiruparankundram hills row in early February this year. Disposing of the petition filed by Raja praying for quashing the notice issued under section 35 of BNSS, Justice P Velmurugan on Monday directed him to appear before the Subramaniapuram police in Madurai and cooperate with them for the investigation in the case. The judge also commented that the petitioner could not challenge the notice issued under section 35 of the BNSS. The Subramaniapuram police registered the FIR under certain sections for alleged hate speech, trying to incite communal disharmony, promoting enmity and violating conditions imposed by the Madurai Bench of Madras HC for conduct of the demonstration held on February 4, 2025. Subsequently, police issued a notice summoning him for probe.

Deaf-and-mute boy (5) & girl (6) wander off, found on railway tracks after 5-hour drama
Nagpur: There was a five-hour-long, edge-of-the-seat drama after a five-year-old girl and a six-year-old boy, both hearing and speech impaired, went missing from their relatives' residence at Aradhana Nagar on Sunday. The frantic search ended only when the two were found aimlessly walking along an under-maintenance railway track in the wee hours of Monday. The search teams heaved a sigh of relief at 2.30am after many tense hours, with the search even including a water-filled ditch amid fears the two may have drowned. Police said the boy and girl, natives of Bihar, had come to Nagpur to visit relatives around a fortnight ago. On Sunday, the two, who were from different families, left home to play at around 5pm but soon lost track of their house. The families, left on tenterhooks when the two did not return, approached Wathoda police station at 9pm. The cops immediately started a search on a war footing. Apart from forming teams, Zonal DCP Rashmitha Rao, ACP Narendra Hiware, and Senior PI Harish Borade also roped in local residents to fan out in different directions. Photographs of the boy and the girl were circulated in local WhatsApp groups. The cops immediately summoned a rescue team. A local diver, Guddu Shewane, took the initiative to jump into the water. The cops were anxious as footprints of the minors could be seen near the ditch. The cops and the aggrieved families were relieved after the search yielded nothing. As the search continued, someone alerted cops about seeing the boy and girl near Chhattarpur farms on the outskirts of the city. Some others had seen the boy and girl walking along the railway tracks where gauge conversion work was underway. The cops, families of the missing minors, volunteers, and others rushed towards the railway track with mobile phone torches and rechargeable LED lights. The boy and girl were finally spotted walking along the track, trying to find a way back home. "The minors were traumatised but safe," said ACP Hiware, adding they were reunited with their families after completing the formalities.

Two drown in Cauvery river near Kumbakonam
Thanjavur: Two people drowned in the Cauvery river near Kumbakonam in Thanjavur district on Sunday. One was swept while bathing, and another slipped and fell. Both their bodies were found on Monday. An engineering graduate named R Rajesh, 25, from Moopakoil in Kumbakonam taluk, along with his friends went to bathe in the Cauvery river on Sunday afternoon. He was swept away in the strong current. A seven-member team from the fire and rescue services station in Kumbakonam, led by K Balasubramanian, went and searched for the missing person. His body was swept for about four km and found near a place called Kodayanthottam on Monday morning. In another incident, S Pandiyan, 65, a banana leaf seller from Perumandi village in Kumbakonam, went to the ghat steps of the Cauvery river near Kumbakonam to wash himself on Sunday evening. He slipped from the steps and fell into the river. His body was found after hours. Police shifted the bodies to the Kumbakonam general hospital for postmortem and then handed them over to their family members. Two cases were registered separately under Kumbakonam East police station under BNSS Section 194 (unnatural death). Investigations are in progress.
