Deaf-and-mute boy (5) & girl (6) wander off, found on railway tracks after 5-hour drama

Time of India23-06-2025
Nagpur: There was a five-hour-long, edge-of-the-seat drama after a five-year-old girl and a six-year-old boy, both hearing and speech impaired, went missing from their relatives' residence at Aradhana Nagar on Sunday.
The frantic search ended only when the two were found aimlessly walking along an under-maintenance railway track in the wee hours of Monday. The search teams heaved a sigh of relief at 2.30am after many tense hours, with the search even including a water-filled ditch amid fears the two may have drowned.
Police said the boy and girl, natives of Bihar, had come to Nagpur to visit relatives around a fortnight ago. On Sunday, the two, who were from different families, left home to play at around 5pm but soon lost track of their house.
The families, left on tenterhooks when the two did not return, approached Wathoda police station at 9pm. The cops immediately started a search on a war footing.
Apart from forming teams, Zonal DCP Rashmitha Rao, ACP Narendra Hiware, and Senior PI Harish Borade also roped in local residents to fan out in different directions. Photographs of the boy and the girl were circulated in local WhatsApp groups. Announcements were made through the public address systems in nearby localities and colonies.

The scariest part came when a woman recalled seeing the boy and girl playing near a ditch filled with water under a railway bridge. The cops immediately summoned a rescue team. A local diver, Guddu Shewane, took the initiative to jump into the water. The cops were anxious as footprints of the minors could be seen near the ditch. The cops and the aggrieved families were relieved after the search yielded nothing.
As the search continued, someone alerted cops about seeing the boy and girl near Chhattarpur farms on the outskirts of the city. Some others had seen the boy and girl walking along the railway tracks where gauge conversion work was underway. The cops, families of the missing minors, volunteers, and others rushed towards the railway track with mobile phone torches and rechargeable LED lights.
The boy and girl were finally spotted walking along the track, trying to find a way back home. "The minors were traumatised but safe," said ACP Hiware, adding they were reunited with their families after completing the formalities.

Attack on ward councillor: HC stays arrest of Patna mayor, son

1 2 Patna: Patna high court has stayed the arrest of city mayor Sita Sahu and her son Shishir Kumar, wanted for allegedly assaulting ward councillor Jeet Kumar during a general body meeting of Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) on July 11. A single bench of Justice Shailendra Singh, while hearing a criminal writ application filed jointly by Sahu and her son, passed the order on Aug 14, however, the same was made available on Monday. The HC also ordered the state director general of police to ensure a fair and impartial investigation into the case registered at Gandhi Maidan police station. Besides, the court directed the police to furnish CCTV camera footage of the alleged incidents of assault and ruckus that took place during the general body meeting of the PMC, seeking a reply within a week. The petitioners' counsel, Ansul, argued that the case against his clients is a "classic example of abuse of police machinery to wreck political vengeances". "The accusations against Sita and Shishir comprised minor offences mostly bailable in nature, except for one offence (of wrongful restraint), which carries punishment of three years' imprisonment. The Supreme Court, almost a decade ago, had ruled that in matters of crime containing minor punishments (less than seven years), police are duty bound to give a notice of appearance to an accused instead of arresting them. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo But in the case of Sita, the police are hell bent on handcuffing her and Shishir despite the alleged crimes involving minor punishments," he said. Appreciating the submissions of Ansul, Justice Singh said that this case seems to be a misuse of police machinery and directed Patna police to file its reply within a week. This matter will be heard again on Aug 22. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
