What Russell Martin told the Rangers legends as Ibrox icon opens up on big pow wow
Ian Durrant has pulled back the curtain on the meeting he and other legends had with new Rangers boss Russell Martin.
Martin invited a clutch of Ibrox icons into the fold so he could glean some advice – and set out his own vision for the Scottish giants.
Durrant got a close-up feel for the new manager and his plans for Rangers when the 58-year-old was ushered into Auchenhowie along with fellow ex-Gers greats Lee McCulloch and John Brown.
And first impressions were positive.
Durrant said: 'It was nice. I've been doing a wee bit of work with the club and they invited us over.
'He was just bouncing a few things off us, asking us what we think.
'We told him - you just need to win. That's the be all and end all.
'Get your the recruitment right. He was good.
'He spoke very well, just the way he outlined the way he wants to go. You've got to back him.
'He's certainly got the backing of the club now with the new regime coming in. As I said, there will be tough games, especially the Champions League qualifier.
'You've got the second leg now. There's a financial burden in terms of what that could do for the club. It's come at an early time but he's working every day.
'He spoke about the fitness levels of the team.
'It looked like the second half on Tuesday that he's worked them really hard. He had a great week down at St George's. He's got all his players back.
'He's hopefully got a couple more players now. Hamza Igamane and Cyriel Dessers missed a fair chunk of pre-season.
'They're a wee bit behind but they'll get game time on Saturday.
'He wants his team so fit. He said that the way he plays, it might take the last 10-15 minutes to break teams down but the only way they're going to break them down is if they are fitter than the other teams.'

However a change to the hierarchy meant that promise was broken and that stung Isak. Now, with the club wanting to reward his importance with a new contract, the player is instead looking at what could be on the horizon for him away from Newcastle. It all comes back to the decision taken by former sporting director Paul Mitchell, who has since left after only spending a year in his role. The ex-Monaco and Tottenham chief told Isak that he would not be offered a new deal with the salary he wanted potentially leading to Profit and Sustainability breaches, as reported the Daily Mail. Mitchell felt that the Swede still had four years left to run on his contract - now three - and was already among the club's highest earners. It has been claimed that the decision upset Isak, with his frustration impacting on the dressing room as a whole. In light of his stellar season, where Isak scored 27 times in all competitions, including one in the Carabao Cup final, the club are ready to offer him a huge pay increase but it may be a case of too little, too late with the player making rumblings that he wants a new challenge elsewhere. Eddie Howe has confessed that any decision must benefit Newcastle, with the club potentially landing a British-record fee if Isak does leave, with the hierarchy ultimately making the final call on his future. He said: "The club will make the right decision with all the information that it has, and ultimately to try and move the club forward in whatever way that is. "But I think there's a wider picture here. There's a whole football club that has to make the decision. The ownership, together with the board of directors, especially with the money involved in modern day transfers. Agyemang is undeniably the breakout star of the defending champions' European campaign where, from their luxury accommodations perched high above Zurich, it is relatively simple for the youngest Lioness on Sarina Wiegman's squad to block out the escalating buzz around her. But as soon as they leave Switzerland – be it with a trophy after Sunday's final with Spain or not – the 19-year-old Arsenal forward, who twice saved the Lionesses from elimination in this tournament, has unequivocally arrived. Former Scotland player named manager of Afghan women's refugee team
Pauline Hamill, who previously played for Celtic, Hibs and Kilmarnock, and coached at Rangers, was announced as the new head coach of the newly formed team by Fifa and has been endorsed by the footballing body's president Gianni Infantino. Fifa said the team is part of their commitment to offer 'every girl and young woman the opportunity to pursue their footballing dreams, regardless of their circumstances'. Women in Afghanistan have been banned from playing sports in the country since the Taliban came to power in 2021. Hamill will manage three 'talent identification camps', from which a squad will be selected to play international friendlies as part of the project. Players for the team will also have access to support in other areas, including physical preparation, nutrition, psychological care and safeguarding. Hamill, who played for Scotland 141 times across an 18-year career, said she had no hesitation in accepting the job, calling it a 'no-brainer'. She said: 'I was super excited, honestly, as soon as I was offered the role. 'From the very start, something about the job was really pulling me in. 'So, when I had the opportunity to lead the team, for me it was an absolute no-brainer. It's a privilege to be invited into this project. 'This is going to be something really special, and I think it's something that they'll remember forever. 'It's more than just a football journey. This is something that will have a lasting effect on people.' Hamill is an experienced coach, as she has worked with the Scotland women's under-17s between 2010 and 2017 before moving up to the under-19s for six years. In 2003 she made history as she became the first ever female coach at Rangers, being appointed to a youth development role at the Ibrox club, while still playing football herself. In 2023 she was named head coach of the Saudi Arabia women's under-20s, which was also a first for the country.
