Panchkula cops tighten the net: 200 CCTV cameras to guard ‘sneak routes'
2
Panchkula: In a move to outsmart criminals who vanish into thin air after committing crimes, the Panchkula police are turning up the heat, installing 200 high-tech CCTV cameras at "secretive" escape routes near Punjab and Himachal borders.
These aren't just any streets. They are the shadowy lanes that snatchers, auto-lifters, and gang members have long used to slip past law enforcement. But not anymore. "We've mapped their escape playbook," said DCP (traffic & crime) Manpreet Singh Sudan. "During our survey, we found there are some streets that lead to other districts or states, and we are getting cameras put up there," he added.
So far, 50 cameras are already watching, with the rest set to be installed within the next two to three months.
These are in addition to the 400 existing cameras installed by the Municipal Corporation. The new eyes in the sky are being placed in areas like Mubarkpur, Peermuchalla, and Pinjore-Kalka—zones that were once safe havens for fleeing criminals.
The police have roped in residents, shopkeepers, and local groups to help set up the cameras, turning the community into a surveillance force of its own.
MC steps up too
Out of the total 473 CCTV cameras installed across the city, about 400 are operational.
Some of the cameras were repaired earlier, but a recent incident involving a telecommunication company's technicians accidentally cutting wires at a city intersection led to additional cameras becoming non-functional.
The Municipal Corporation has now allocated Rs 23 lakh for the repair of the remaining 88 faulty cameras. Additionally, a contract has already been awarded for the annual maintenance of the working CCTV units to ensure continuous surveillance and functionality. Tenders have already been floated for installing CCTV cameras in markets located in Sectors 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 15, as well as in all villages and community centres within Panchkula.
