Scientists Developed ‘Super Steel' That Could Take Fusion to the Next Level
The central solenoid is the heart of a fusion reactor, and a "jacket" of meticulously crafted stainless steel—capable of withstanding extreme temperatures and magnetic fields—protects it.
Chinese scientists say that a new super steel, called China high-strength low-temperature steel No. 1, (CHSN01), can operate at a maximum of 20 Tesla, which outperforms the steel jacket that will be used by ITER.
China is incorporating CHSN01 into its Burning Plasma Experiment Superconducting Tokamak (BEST) and will likely play a role in future fusion projects well into the future.
The biggest unknown in fusion energy isn't the physics powering gargantuan reactors known as tokamaks. Scientists are confident that if a reactor contains a superheated plasma, fueled by heavy hydrogen isotopes of deuterium and tritium, at temperatures approaching 100 million degrees Celsius, you will produce a self-sustaining reaction, generating near endless amounts of clean energy. Tokamaks around the world—not to the National Ignition Facility's successful fusion ignition in 2022—have proven this out time and again.
The real problem is the materials needed to build the thing.
'You need a material solution. Give me the materials that can hold this thing together, at temperature, to be efficient,' Phil Ferguson, Ph.D., Director of the Material Plasma Exposure eXperiment (MPEX) Project at Oak Ridge National Laboratory told Popular Mechanics in 2024. 'We are still lacking a breakthrough in materials.'
Not only does a fusion reactor need parts, such as the divertor, to handle the plasma's extreme heat, other parts of the very same machine need to withstand and operate at temperatures approaching absolute zero. One of these parts is the very heart of the reactor, called the central solenoid, which is responsible for a majority of the magnetic flux to generate the plasma and is powered by ultracold cable-in-conduit superconductors. The shield, or jacket, for the central solenoid needs to be a steel material that can retain superior mechanical and thermal properties at cryogenic temperatures while also withstanding intense magnetic fields.
The International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER), the world's most advanced tokamak that's due for first plasma by 2034, uses a material known as 316LN stainless steel designed to operate at a maximum of 11.8 Tesla. Now, a new report from the state-run South China Morning Post (SCMP) suggests that Chinese scientists have come up with a new material that has even ITER's steel jacket of choice beat. This super steel, called China high-strength low-temperature steel No. 1, or CHSN01, can withstand up to 20 Tesla and 1,500-megapascal (MPa) of stress. Scientists detailed the 12-year process to create this particular steel jacket in the journal Applied Sciences this past May.
'While ITER's maximum 11.8 Tesla field design is enough for itself, future higher-field magnets will require advanced materials,' said Li Laifeng, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Sciences' (CAS), reports SCMP. 'Developing next-gen cryogenic steel isn't optional – it's essential for the success of China's compact fusion energy experimental devices.'
CHSN01 will be in the central Solenoid of China's Burning Plasma Experiment Superconducting Tokamak (BEST), an intermediary reactor between the country's first-generation fusion reactors and the Chinese Fusion Engineering Test Reactor—the country's first fusion plant demonstrator. Scientists aim for the BEST reactor to achieve first plasma in late 2027.

Zeekr Boosts Margins, Slashes Losses As New Models Power Sales
ZEEKR Intelligent Technology (NYSE:ZK), a premium electric vehicle (EV) unit of Geely Auto, reported fiscal second-quarter results on Thursday. The company reported quarterly revenue of 27.43 billion Chinese yuan, representing a decrease of 0.9% year-on-year (Y/Y). In U.S. dollars, revenue totaled $3.83 billion. The revenue grew by 24.6% quarter-on-quarter (Q/Q).Total vehicle deliveries were 130,866 units for the quarter, representing a 9.3% Y/Y increase and a 14.8% Q/Q increase. The Zeekr brand delivered 49,337 vehicles. Meanwhile, the Lynk & Co brand delivered 81,529 vehicles, with 58.8% of deliveries coming from NEV models. The premium electric vehicle company's adjusted net loss per ADS was 1.42 Chinese yuan. In U.S. dollar terms, the company reported adjusted net loss per ADS of 20 cents. Vehicle sales revenue were 22.92 billion Chinese yuan ($3.2 billion) for the quarter, representing an increase of 2.2% Y/Y driven by higher sales volume of the Lynk & Co brand, partially offset by lower sales volume of the Zeekr brand. The revenue grew by 20.0% Q/Q, mainly driven by sales growth resulting from the launch of new models. Revenues from other sales and services declined 13.8% Y/Y to $630 million for the quarter, due to a decrease in R&D revenue from related parties. The revenue grew by 54.5% Q/Q due to the increased overseas sales of battery packs and electric drives. The gross margin expanded to 20.6% for the quarter from 18.0% a year ago. The prior quarter margin was 19.1%. Adjusted net loss was $51 million for the quarter, down by 81.2% Y/Y. The loss declined by 38.8% Q/Q. As of June 30, 2025, cash and cash equivalents and restricted cash stood at 10.21 billion Chinese yuan ($1.43 billion). Nvidia's Trump Tax of Little Worry to Investors Eyeing AI Riches

(NVDA) on certain semiconductors sold in China did nothing to damp investor enthusiasm for the world's most valuable company. In the first quarter, Nvidia said it sold $5.5 billion in products to China, roughly 13% of its total. The chips exposed to the Trump tax accounted for about 80% of that, or just under $5 billion. That means the Santa Clara, California-based firm could send some $700 million per quarter to the Treasury — hardly chump change. But for a company that churns out $20 billion in profit a quarter and increases sales by a similar amount - a rate of growth it's sustained throughout the AI boom — paying the tax barely registers. 'I don't think it's that big of an issue,' said Larry Tentarelli, founder of Blue Chip Daily. 'If it was their overall revenue base, it would be a big problem. But because China is not the biggest proportion of their revenues, it's a speed bump.' Nvidia shares slipped Monday after the tax was disclosed, then rallied to a fresh record Tuesday in a broad market advance. The chipmaker's shares have doubled since early April, pushing its market value past $4.4 trillion. Similarly, AMD (AMD), which agreed to the same tax, closed at the highest in more than a year on Wednesday, bringing year-to-date gains to 53%. Nvidia reports second quarter earnings on Aug. 27. Analysts expect it will report earnings growth of 44% on a 53% surge in revenue to $45.9 billion. That's not to say the clouds have completely lifted in China. Bloomberg News reported this week that Beijing has encouraged local firms to avoid using Nvidia's chips — a move that could limit sales. And worries abound that chipmakers will increasingly become ensnared in federal trade policy or that China could make a more formal recommendation to ban certain US chips altogether. 'It is a hard game to know how this will play out. I would almost consider the stocks absent this news,' said Michael Matousek, head trader at U.S. Global Investors Inc. 'If you already liked them, there's potential for upside from China, but there are risks this could change again.' None of that, though, seems to register among investors betting that red-hot demand for AI infrastructure will continue to burn. The trend has lifted shares of Nvidia from their April lows alongside Magnificent Seven peers deemed AI winners, including Meta Platforms Inc. and Microsoft Corp. The tax news is 'mostly empty calories,' Citigroup's Christopher Danely wrote in a note this week on AMD. 'We view this as not material given the low margins of these products, and these AI GPUs could be banned in China again.' At Bernstein, analyst Stacy Rasgon worries about the precedent the Trump tax sets. The arrangement 'might raise some money, but doesn't seem to address any strategic issues beyond a grab for dollars,' he wrote in a note published Aug. 11. Regardless, Nvidia shares will rise or fall on its ability to deliver sales of cutting-edge chips, most notably its Blackwell products. 'What's more important is the trajectory of Blackwell and whether or not Blackwell is going to meet or exceed expectations,' said Melissa Otto of Visible Alpha LLC. 'That's what the market has priced in. That's where we see the biggest uplift in demand and growth. And so that is ultimately what is going to drive the earnings expectations and valuation for the stock.' That major question, along with the trade uncertainty and Nvidia's rally do leave the shares exposed to profit-taking ahead of the Aug. 27 report. 'I'm not going to bet on whether this stays a positive,' said Alvin Nguyen, senior analyst at Forrester. 'There have been so many rapid changes, there's still so much uncertainty, and we need to see stability in trade.'
