New Delhi, Aug 4 (PTI) India emerged as the world's fifth biggest aviation market, handling 241 million passengers, while Mumbai-Delhi was one of the busiest airport pairs in 2024, according to data released by global airlines' grouping IATA.
The International Airport Transport Association (IATA), which represents around 350 airlines, on Monday released the latest edition of the World Air Transport Statistics (WATS) for 2024.
India saw 211 million air passengers last year, a growth of 11.1 per cent compared to 2023, ahead of Japan, which handled 205 million passengers with an annual rise of 18.6 per cent.
"The US remains the world's biggest aviation market with 876 million passengers in 2024 on the strength of its domestic market, growing 5.2 per cent year-on-year.
"China was the second-biggest passenger market, with 741 million passengers, a growth of 18.7 per cent compared to 2023," it said in a release.
While India stood at the 5th place, the UK at the 3rd spot (261 million passengers) and Spain at the 4th position (241 million).
The figures include all international and domestic passengers departing or arriving in each country.
Among the top 10 airport pairs, Mumbai-Delhi was the 7th busiest, carrying 5.9 million passengers in 2024.
"Asia Pacific dominated the ranking for the world's busiest airport pairs, with Jeju-Seoul (CJU-GMP) the most popular route globally, with 13.2 million passengers flying between the two airports in 2024.
"In the top 10, only one airport pair -- Jeddah-Riyadh (JED-RUH) -- was not in the Asia Pacific region," IATA said.
As per the grouping, international premium class travel -- business and first class -- grew 11.8 per cent, outpacing growth in global economy travel of 11.5 per cent.
In 2024, the total number of international premium class travellers was 116.9 million or 6 per cent of the total international passengers.
"Leading the regions in terms of percentage growth was Asia Pacific with a year-on-year growth of 22.8 per cent, with 21 million premium passengers -- although it was outpaced in growth by economy class passenger numbers, up 28.6 per cent to 500.8 million.
"Growth in premium travel exceeded economy class travel in Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and North America. Europe remained the largest market for international premium travel, with 39.3 million premium passengers, while premium travellers as a percentage of all travellers were highest in the Middle East at 14.7 per cent," IATA said.
Last year, narrow-body planes of Boeing and Airbus were among the most used ones.
Boeing's B737 alone flew 10 million flights with 2.4 trillion Available Seat Kilometres (ASKs) in 2024.
"This was followed by the Airbus A320 with 7.9 million flights and 1.7 trillion ASKs and the Airbus A321 with 3.4 million flights and 1.1 trillion ASKs," it said.
ASK is an indicator of capacity.

New Leadership, talent strategy to make Tech Mahindra world-leading entity: CEO Mohit Joshi

The new leadership, along with the steps being undertaken to nurture internal talents, will make Tech Mahindra not just a world-leading entity but also a world-beating organisation, a top company official has said. Tech Mahindra has restructured its global operations following the exit of some of its employees after the succession of the CEO role to Mohit Joshi, who has been with the company since its founding and is one of the longest-serving chief executives in the IT industry, CP Gurnani. "Our talent is the engine driving Tech Mahindra's transformation. We are doing what it takes to make TechM not just a world-leading, but a world-beating organisation, whether that means creating new roles, nurturing internal talent, or bringing in bold new leadership," Joshi told PTI in an email interview. The company has appointed new leaders for several verticals and elevated internal senior employees between August 2023 and June 2025 to lead key divisions at the organisation in global roles. "We have restructured our global operations into six focused Strategic Business Units; each aligned with our delivery priorities and designed to accelerate our multi-year growth agenda. We have carefully calibrated leadership roles to blend experience, expertise, and future focus. This balance of continuity and fresh perspective gives us the edge to deliver on our FY'27 ambitions," Joshi said. For the financial year 2027, Tech Mahindra has set goals to achieve higher average growth than its peers and expects the current fiscal year to surpass FY'25. The company initiated the process of installing new leadership with the appointment of Atul Soneja as Chief Operating Officer in August 2023, from New Jersey-based CitiusTech. The company elevated Harshvendra Soin to President for Asia Pacific and Japan Business in January 2024, who had also served as Country Head for Canada and Head of Business HR for APAC and EMEA (Telecom and Enterprise) at Tech Mahindra. In the leadership reshuffle, the company has appointed nine new leaders and elevated seven leaders to global roles in the last two years, with the recent hiring being the appointment of Amol Phadke as Chief Transformation Officer of Tech Mahindra in June 2025. Joshi said the impact of new leadership was reflected in the June quarter, where EBIT margins improved for seven consecutive quarters and have now reached 11.1 per cent, compared to 10.5 per cent last year. Tech Mahindra reported a 34 per cent growth in consolidated profit to Rs 1,141 crore, while its revenue grew by 2.7 per cent to Rs 13,351 crore during the June 2025 quarter.

Army shares old news clip highlighting role played by US in arming Pakistan

Agency: PTI New Delhi, Aug 5 (PTI) In the backdrop of mounting US criticism of India's purchase of crude oil from Russia, the Indian Army on Tuesday posted a news clip of August 1971 which highlighted the role played by the US in arming Pakistan 'since 1954". The news clip was shared in a post by the Eastern Command on X. '#IndianArmy #EasternCommand #VijayVarsh #LiberationOfBangladesh #MediaHighlights 'This Day That Year" Build Up of War – 05 Aug 1971 #KnowFacts. US Arms Worth $2 Billion Shipped to Pakistan Since '54," it said. The news, published few months before the Indo-Pak War of 1971 that led to creation of Bangladesh, talks about the role US had played in arming Pakistan the preceding nearly two decades. 'US Arms Worth $2 Billion Shipped to Pakistan Since '54," the headline says. The report quotes V C Shukla, then minister for defence production, who had told the Rajya Sabha about the estimated valuation of the arms supplied for that period. The social media post comes amid mounting criticism by Washington on New Delhi's purchase of crude oil from Russia. India on Monday mounted an unusually sharp counterattack on the US and the European Union for their 'unjustified and unreasonable" targeting of New Delhi for its procurement of Russian crude oil. New Delhi's response came hours after US President Donald Trump asserted that Washington will substantially raise tariffs on goods from India over its energy ties with Russia. Firmly rejecting the criticism, India pointed out the double standards in targeting it on the issue and said both the US and the EU are continuing their trade relations with Russia. 'Unlike our case, such trade is not even a vital national compulsion," the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said. The Europe-Russia trade includes not just energy, but also fertilisers, mining products, chemicals, iron and steel, and machinery and transport equipment, the MEA said in a late-evening statement. 'Where the US is concerned, it continues to import from Russia uranium hexafluoride for its nuclear industry, palladium for its EV industry, fertilizers as well as chemicals," it added. 'In this background, the targeting of India is unjustified and unreasonable. Like any major economy, India will take all necessary measures to safeguard its national interests and economic security," the MEA said. It said India has been 'targeted" by the US and the EU for importing oil from Russia after the commencement of the Ukraine conflict.
