Lionel Messi & Inter Miami Fight Back For 3-3 Draw At Philadelphia

News1825-05-2025

Inter Miami drew 3-3 with Philadelphia Union thanks to Telasco Segovia's stoppage-time goal.
Inter Miami fought back from 3-1 down to grab a 3-3 draw at MLS Eastern Conference leaders the Philadelphia Union on Saturday thanks to a stoppage-time leveller from substitute Telasco Segovia.
Israeli forward Tai Baribo scored twice for Philadelphia to give them the two goal advantage but Lionel Messi gave Miami hope with an 87th-minute free-kick before Venezuelan Segovia dramatically grabbed the point.
Quinn Sullivan, called up this week by Mauricio Pochettino to the US national team squad, fired Philadelphia ahead in the seventh minute with a sweet strike after Miami's defence had failed to close down.

Baribo made it 2-0 with an instinctive finish in the 44th minute as Miami's defensive troubles continued.
The visitors got a foothold in the game in the 60th minute when Noah Allen floated in a cross from the left, which was met by a firm header from Argentine Tadeo Allende.
But Philadelphia restored their two-goal cushion when, from a long throw, Miami were unable to clear and Jean-Jacques Danley pounced on the loose ball and Baribo fired home.
Messi beat Union keeper Andrew Rick with a characteristically well-driven free-kick for his sixth goal of the season, three minutes from the end of regulation time, to set up a frantic finale.
Jovan Lukic hit the bar from inside the box early in stoppage time as Philly looked to wrap-up the win but they were left crestfallen in the fifth minute of stoppage time when, after good work from Messi, Segovia pounced and blasted home.
There was still time for one more chance, but an unmarked Danley, who had an outstanding game in midfield, somehow headed wide from close range.
While the result was a welcome sign of character from Miami, they remain with just one win in their past eight games in all competitions having conceded 23 goals.
Javier Mascherano's side are sixth in the Eastern Conference, and the former Barcelona and Argentina midfielder praised his team's response.
'We showed character, personality. It was another difficult start of the game for us because in the beginning we conceded the goal… but the guys showed they want to fight to get out of this situation," said the Miami coach.
'We are in a bad trend, but with a lot of spirit to come back to be the team we were at the beginning of the season," he added before demanding better from his back line.
'We cannot concede every single corner kick and every single throw-in and give opponents opportunities to score… we need to be more focused in those situations," Mascherano said.
USA forward Patrick Agyemang had scored twice for Dean Smith's Charlotte, but Malte Amundsen looked to have earned the Columbus Crew a point before Spaniard Pep Biel grabbed a 75th-minute winner for a 3-2 triumph.
Mexican star Hirving 'Chucky' Lozano's stoppage-time header earned San Diego a 2-1 victory over the winless defending champion Los Angeles Galaxy.
Former Arsenal and France striker Olivier Giroud's 77th-minute goal earned Los Angeles FC a 2-2 draw at Montreal, while Duncan McGuire's first league goal of the season gave Orlando a 1-0 victory over the Portland Timbers.
Argentine Max Urruti's 84th-minute goal gave the New England Revolution a 3-3 draw at Sporting Kansas City after the visitors had let an early 2-0 lead slip.

India go down against Argentina in FIH Hockey Pro League match

Amstelveen, June 13 (UNI) India suffered a close 1-2 defeat against Argentina in their FIH Hockey Pro League 2024/25 game at the Wagener Hockey Stadium here in Netherlands. Jugraj Singh (4') netted a goal for the Indian team, while for Argentina, Tomas Domene (9', 49') scored a brace. Notably, India's regular Captain Harmanpreet Singh missed the game due to a finger tissue injury sustained in the previous match. In his absence, Vice Captain Hardik Singh stepped up to lead the team on Thursday. Argentina started the game with high pressing and greater ball possession, but India responded with sharp passing and swift circle entries. This early momentum earned them a penalty corner, which Jugraj Singh (4') converted with a powerful drag flick to hand India the lead. Argentina quickly earned a penalty corner of their own, but Indian goalkeeper Krishan Bahadur Pathak stood tall, making a crucial save and clearing the danger. Moments later, Pathak was called into action again, diving to deny another Argentine penalty corner conversion. However, the Argentines got third time lucky as Tomas Domene (9') fired home to level the score. Both teams continued to threaten, but the first quarter ended evenly poised at 1-1. The second quarter saw Argentina pushing forward with early circle entries, but India's defence held firm to thwart their advances. India responded by intercepting passes and launching speedy counter-attacks, putting pressure on Argentina's goalkeeper Tomas Santiago, who stood his ground with key saves. Argentina, too, found themselves in promising positions but failed to convert their chances. Despite the end-to-end action, neither side could break the deadlock in the second quarter, and the teams went into halftime with the score still level at 1-1. The penultimate quarter saw both teams adopting a cautious approach, focusing on maintaining possession and controlling the tempo of the game. Much of the action unfolded in the midfield, with both India and Argentina finding it difficult to penetrate each other's defensive lines. As a result, clear-cut chances were few and far between, and neither side managed to create any substantial threats in the attacking circle. The evenly contested third quarter ended without any change to the scoreline, which remained tied at 1-1 heading into the final period. Argentina came out strong in the fourth and final quarter, applying relentless pressure on India's defence with aggressive pressing. Their efforts soon bore fruit as Tomas Domene (49') struck his second goal of the match, once again converting a penalty corner to give Argentina a 2-1 lead. Trailing for the first time in the game, India shifted to a long-passing strategy in search of an equaliser. However, Argentina remained compact at the back, successfully absorbing the pressure and denying India any clear breakthroughs. India's best opportunity came in the dying moments when they were awarded a penalty stroke with less than two minutes left on the clock. Jugraj Singh stepped up to take the shot, but his effort was brilliantly saved by goalkeeper Tomas Santiago. The crucial save ensured Argentina held on to their narrow lead, eventually sealing a 2-1 victory. As a result of the loss, India now sit fifth in the points table with 15 points from 12 matches. They will next play against Australia on 14th June. It is worth noting that both India and Argentina observed a one-minute silence before the match to pay tribute to the victims of the tragic Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad — an incident that has deeply shaken the nation. on Star Sports Select. FIFA Club World Cup marks ‘new era' for football: Infantino

FIFA president Gianni Infantino says the FIFA Club World Cup, which kicks off on Saturday, marks a historic 'new era' for the game, comparing it to the first World Cup held in 1930. In an interview with AFP, Infantino also aimed at critics of FIFA's ticketing policy and said that sceptics who had questioned the need for the tournament would quickly change their minds. The 32-team competition, featuring clubs from all continents, gets underway with Inter Miami facing Egyptian club Al-Ahly at Hard Rock Stadium. 'It starts a new era of football, a new era of club football. A little bit like when, in 1930, the first World Cup, right, started,' Infantino told AFP. 'Everyone today speaks about the very first World Cup. That's why it's also, this World Cup here is historic.' The first World Cup was held in Uruguay in 1930 and Infantino noted that only European and South American teams took part, adding that the Club World Cup would give a chance to clubs from outside of football's traditional heartlands to play on the global stage. 'We want to be inclusive. We want to give opportunities to clubs from all over the world,' he said. 'It's really to globalise football, to make it truly, truly global. Because when you scratch the surface, we say it's the number one sport in the world, and it is but then the elite is very concentrated in very few clubs, in very few countries,' he said. ALSO READ | What's new at FIFA Club World Cup 2025? Innovations and rule changes explained The Swiss official, who was general secretary of European body UEFA before taking the helm at FIFA in 2016, said that the club tournament also offered chances to players from over 80 countries. 'Countries who would never have a chance to play in a World Cup are suddenly part of a World Cup and they feel to be part of it, the fans of these players and of these clubs,' added Infantino, who noted several great players of the past who never played in a World Cup, 'A very good friend of mine is George legend, great player, Ballon d'Or winner, only African player who ever won the Ballon d'Or, by the way. He never played in a World Cup. He would have been playing in a Club World Cup and made not only his club and also his country proud,' he added. 'Something special' Infantino dismissed concerns that the tournament added to fixture congestion but acknowledged that some fans were yet to be sure of the value of the tournament, saying though that would quickly change. 'I believe, I'm convinced that, you know, as soon as the ball starts rolling, the whole world will realise what is happening here. It's something special,' he said. Reports of low uptake of tickets for the same games have led to criticism of FIFA's ticketing policy with 'dynamic pricing', increasingly common in the United States, allowing for prices to rise and fall according to demand. But Infantino defended the approach and the decision to offer heavy discounts to students in Miami. 'I'm a positive person generally, but they criticise FIFA if the prices are too high, then they criticise FIFA if the prices are too low. Students! I mean, when I was a student and I didn't have money, I would have loved FIFA to come to me and say, You want to come and watch a World Cup match?' 'We don't want to see empty stadiums. I believe the stadiums will be pretty full,' he said. The FIFA president said that the tournament, which secured a global broadcasting deal with DAZN, reportedly worth $1 billion, was already an economic success and stressed that all the money generated from commercial deals would be reinvested in the game. Asked how he would judge whether the tournament had been a success, Infantino said he would feel it in his 'heart' but said he was confident. 'In terms of inclusivity, in terms of economy, in terms of fan interest, you take all of these criteria, we'll speak again at the end of the club World Cup, but already now, I (feel positive), when I look at the number of tickets sold, and I look at the TV rights,' he said, noting that the games were available on DAZN's streams for free. 'Tell me one top competition today, where you can watch football for free?' he asked. The Club World Cup has also been caught up in the US's fierce debates over immigration control with games being held near Los Angeles, scenes of violent clashes between protestors and immigration officers. 'Security for me and for us is a top priority, always. So when something is happening, like in Los Angeles we are obviously monitoring the situation, we are in constant contact with the authorities, we want fans to go in games in a safe environment,' he said.
