Coroner: Over 700 deaths linked to fetnanyl in Greenville County
The Attorney Generals' Office said on Monday that through the 'Devil in Disguise' investigation more than seven and a half pounds of fentanyl has been seized in Greenville County, along with more than six pounds of cocaine and nearly 20 pounds of meth.
Last year federal, state, and local leaders stood in Greenville County and shared a message to those involved in fentanyl trafficking. At the time more than 60 individuals had been indicted. Since then authorities said that number has almost doubled.
In the last three years the Greenville County Coroners' Office said nearly 700 people died from a drug-related overdose. Many of those deaths, Chief Deputy Coroner Shelton England says, were related to fentanyl.
The Greenville County Coroners' Office said they have had 21 confirmed overdose deaths this year, 10 of those include fentanyl. Seventeen possible overdose cases are still pending.
'What happens is fluid in the lungs because what happens is the respiratory drive starts to decrease and essentially someone drowns from the inside out,' said England.
In Greenville County authorities are cracking down on those they believe are responsible for fentanyl trafficking. Sheriff Hobart Lewis issued a warning.
'If it is worth it to sling this poison out here on these streets just know we are watching you, we are going to charge you, we are going to put you in that building next door 'til it's busting at the seams,' Greenville County Sheriff, Hobart Lewis said.
The coroner's office said since operation 'Devil in Disguise' started, overdose deaths have decreased but that number last year still totaled 170 people who lost their lives.
England said the conversations his office has with loved ones are not easy.
'It's devastating,' Shelton said. 'First and foremost you are telling someone the worst news that they are ever going to get in their entire life and then you have to start asking these questions that are incriminating.'
Lewis said his department has a drug enforcement unit; that's a collaboration of all the counties municipalities.
He said so far 15 people in Greenville County have been charged with distribution of a controlled substance resulting in death and two have been charged with homicide by overdose on a state grand jury level.
'Legislators I think are finally coming around to hold people accountable that are putting this poison on the street for our young people,' Lewis said. 'It is extremely dangerous for our community, and we are not going to stand for it.'
Lewis said operation 'Devil in Disguise' is not over in Greenville County. The investigation statewide will continue as they work to make South Carolina safer.

SC first responder community mourns multiple losses in one week
(WSPA) South Carolina's first responder community is mourning after a week marked by the loss of multiple heroes in the law enforcement and fire services. In separate incidents, several current and retired members of fire departments and law enforcement agencies died. A trooper with the South Carolina Highway Patrol died nearly four days after being struck by a vehicle on I-26 during a traffic stop. Trooper First Class Dennis Ricks died Wednesday night, according to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety. 'A graduate of SCHP Class 123 in September 2023, Ricks has proudly served in Troop 7 (Orangeburg, Calhoun) since then,' according to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety. 'This is a devastating loss for his family, for those who worked alongside him in Troop Seven and the entire Highway Patrol and DPS family. Our deepest condolences go to his wife and family as they navigate this immense loss.' Ricks was conducting a traffic stop on I-26 at mile marker 166 when he was struck by a box truck around 2 a.m. Sunday, August 9. Authorities said he suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital. According to a social post from his wife, he suffered a severe brain injury, bleeding, swelling, kidney bleeding, and several broken bones. His wife, Jade Riley Ricks, described him as 'the kindest, sweetest, most gentle soul.' 'Of all people, my Dennis didn't deserve this… To say he is a phenomenal man and husband is quite an understatement,' she added. Ricks' funeral will be held on Tuesday, August 19, in Columbia, according to SCDPS. A captain with the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office was identified as the victim in a head-on collision Thursday night. The Oconee County Coroner's Office announced Friday morning that Captain Steven Henderson, of Spartanburg, died from injuries sustained in a motorcycle crash reported in Walhalla. The Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office said Henderson served for over 19 years in various roles throughout the agency. Before beginning his career in law enforcement, Henderson served in the United States Air Force from 1994 to 1998. Henderson also spent a significant time working with the Sheriff's Office K-9 unit and served as an operator on the SWAT team. He received numerous awards and commendations, including the Medal of Valor, multiple Deputy of the Quarter awards, and K-9 Handler of the Year for five consecutive years. 'Steven wasn't just a decorated law enforcement officer—he was a husband, a Pop, a best friend, and a hero to all who knew him,' a friend of Henderson wrote on a fundraiser page. The fire service community also experienced profound losses this week. On Tuesday, the Mauldin Fire Department announced the death of retired Captain Phillip Brown. A Travelers Rest native, Captain Brown served Mauldin for 30 years, beginning in December of 1986 and retiring in 2016. 'We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, especially his wife Barbara and his daughter Christina, as well as to his brothers and sisters in the fire service who mourn this tremendous loss. The procession will follow to Graceland East Memorial Park in Simpsonville. The community is mourning the loss of a fire chief who spent more than four decades serving. Chief Mark Holbrook spent 44 years with the Gantt District Fire Department. Police investigating Strictly 'drug use' claims
The Metropolitan Police has said it is investigating allegations of drug use on Strictly Come Dancing. In a statement, the Met said it had "received an allegation about drug related offences". "Police are assessing the information and further enquiries are taking place to establish whether there is evidence of a criminal offence being committed," it said. The BBC said it had "clear protocols and policies in place" for dealing with any serious complaints raised with it. The Met's involvement comes after the the BBC launched an investigation earlier this month into alleged drug use by two stars of the show, who have not been named. It followed a report in the Sun on Sunday, which said the alleged drug use by the stars was widely talked about on the show. BBC News understands the corporation has hired a law firm to help it carry out the probe. On Sunday, the Sun reported that the BBC had referred the matter to police. A Met spokesperson later confirmed that the force had "received an allegation about drug related offences" on Tuesday 12 August. The BBC said it would not comment on any police investigation. But it highlighted a previous statement which read: "We have clear protocols and policies in place for dealing with any serious complaint raised with us. "We would always encourage people to speak to us if they have concerns. It would not be appropriate for us to comment further." Strictly, which has been airing since 2004, has faced multiple controversies over the past few years relating to the behaviour of some of its professionals and celebrity guests. It is believed, however, that this is the first time the BBC has been in contact with the police over allegations linked to the show.

Three arrested in murder investigation after woman fatally assaulted Three men have been arrested in a murder investigation that was launched after a woman in her 20s was fatally assaulted, police said. The Metropolitan Police were called to Chadwell Heath, east London, just after 5.30am on Saturday after reports of an assault. Paramedics also attended but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene in Chadwell Heath Lane, the force said. A 35-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and two men, aged 21 and 22, were arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender, it added on Sunday. 'Early enquiries by detectives indicate this is an isolated incident and those involved are believed to be known to each other', the Met said. A cordon is in place and a police tent was erected in the driveway to a residential care home. The woman has not yet been formally identified but officers believe she was in her 20s. The victim's family have been informed and are being supported by family liaison officers, the force added. Detective Superintendent Brian Hobbs said: 'Our thoughts remain with the victim's family and friends in light of this truly tragic event. 'Although we have now made arrests, local residents will continue to see an increased number of officers in and around the area while our investigative work is carried out. 'I would ask anyone who was in the area of Romford, who may have seen or heard anything suspicious, to speak to us.'
