Sahana Ahmed: 'As an army kid, I grew up around people who could move mountains'

Refinement, both in content and design, is a top priority. I try and ensure that everyone associated with our titles feels valued. In some of our books, the author appears as a character in the artwork. We've even designed learning resources that reflect their personalities. Contributors get handmade portraits, including our artists. Their names are woven into illustrations and covers. Our books are full of such Easter eggs.
I come from a background of hospitality management. I like creating these moments of delight.
What broad themes or genres interest you?
Our current focus is on books for children and young adults. By the end of the year, we will expand our list to include literary fiction. By early 2026, we plan to launch VTRN, an imprint dedicated to inspirational military-themed literature authored by veterans.
What aesthetic and social values would VTRN's titles reflect?
VTRN will publish practical guides and handbooks by military leaders, designed for young and new adults. Think of them as affordable Emily Post-style books, adapted for the Indian youth.
What are some of your upcoming titles?
We have two short story anthologies in development: The Bare Bones Book of Humour and The Bare Bones Book of Speculative Fiction. The Song of Time explores the festivals of India. We are also working on titles focused on responsible tourism and geopolitics for children. In addition, we have five books on managing emotions, each tailored to a specific age group and offering a unique perspective.

What values do you bring to your book designs?
The more I learn about book design, the more I realise I was always meant to do this. I love collaborating with artists and illustrators. It's fascinating how simply allowing the text to breathe can elevate the reading experience, especially in fiction.
You are a writer with multiple books published, and you also mentioned working in hospitality management. Do these experiences blend in the way you approach publishing? To expand the scope of the question, how does your family and cultural background also play a part in this enterprise?
As a writer, I've always paid close attention to the editorial and marketing aspects of publishing. To further understand production and distribution, I also attended a publishing course. Ideas come to me constantly, but the ability to execute them — that I owe to my time as a hotel management student. As an army kid, I grew up around people who could move mountains, sometimes quite literally. Nischay Kar Apni Jeet Karon — the motto of the Sikh Regiment —that's my personal mantra as well.
What are your future aspirations for Bare Bones Publishing?
Our immediate goal is to achieve operational sustainability. We are already creating books we believe will stand the test of time. The next step is to ensure they reach as many readers as possible. Also, I would love to publish graphic novels.
What circumstances led to your opening a publishing house?
I'm a naturally curious person. Having worked across multiple sectors and having built several communities from the ground up, I realised I had a strong network of subject matter experts, good organisational skills, and the discipline and resources to build a brand. I had the means to invest, I'm not afraid of hard work, and I learn quickly.
With apologies to Toni Morrison: If there's a book you want to read but it hasn't been written yet, then you must make it happen.
What are your sources of inspiration in the context of BBP?
Personally, I am inspired by architecture, music, cinema, and good food. I am especially drawn to works that push the boundaries of skill, originality, and scale.
In the context of Bare Bones, I wish to follow in the footsteps of Satyajit Ray, PG Wodehouse, Goscinny and Uderzo, RK Narayan, RK Laxman, Ajit Ninan, Pran, Vishnu Sharma, Mark Twain… People who shaped my imagination as a child.
The role models mentioned by you are similar in some ways. They address a large audience and also adopt a broadly humanistic view. What drew you to them?
At least once a day, I remind myself why I make books. As a home-schooled child in remote Manipur, with few friends my age, books were my only companions. I was simply happy to read, anything and everything. If nothing else was around, I would read the labels on toiletries. In many ways, I do what I do for that inner child. My role models are the people who shaped my imagination in those early years.
As an independent publisher, what does your day look like?
I wish I could ration my time more prudently, but apart from editorial duties, I also manage art direction, accounting, production, packaging, shipping, and publicity. Often, these tasks overlap. Thankfully, I am good at multitasking, and I don't mind the mundane. I enjoy every step of the process. No two days are the same, but I have not taken any breaks this year. There are no weekends for me.

Does publishing have an impact on your own writing work? In your experience, does the role of the writer help or hinder the publisher's part?
Being a writer is what led me to publishing. It also gave me a deep appreciation for the publisher's role in a book's success. I'm uncompromising when it comes to ensuring our authors have the best possible experience. As for my own writing, it still needs more attention from me. I haven't yet written the book my mentors would wholeheartedly endorse, but all in good time. Books can't be rushed. I should know.

Taylor Swift's new album is rumored to include sharp digs at Blake Lively and Donald Trump with love songs about Travis Kelce

Taylor Swift's new album, 'The Life of a Showgirl,' is creating buzz (Getty Images) Taylor Swift 's surprise reveal of her 12th studio album, The Life of a Showgirl, has set the internet on fire, not only for its unapologetically pop aesthetic but for whispers that it may include pointed references to right-wing figures and even Donald Trump. Multiple outlets say the record will mix glittery sonics with some of the 'dark chapters' Swift has lived through, suggesting a sharper edge beneath the neon. Taylor Swift's 'The Life of a Showgirl' teases bold themes Taylor Swift announced the project in a playful cameo for boyfriend Travis Kelce 's New Heights podcast, flashing a mint-green briefcase and a blurred cover—classic Swiftian misdirection that guarantees fan theorizing. Soon after, she surfaced a Spotify playlist titled 'And, baby, that's show business for you,' a wink that many listeners read as an early mood board for the album. — chartstswift (@chartstswift) Where Travis Kelce fits into the narrative—and why that matters Kelce isn't just a footnote in this era; he's part of the roll-out DNA. The announcement itself leveraged his platform, and reporting hints that the romance inspired portions of the record's warmer, triumphant tones, counterbalancing its bruised confessions. Even as tabloids float the notion of a track joking about a media 'PR stunt,' the broader storyline paints Kelce as the steady presence who helped unlock brighter, bolder songwriting. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Live Update: The Strategy Uses By Successful Intraday Trader TradeWise Learn More Undo It's a savvy cultural crossover: NFL star power meeting pop's most meticulous strategist. The Blake Lively question, the rumored Donald Trump jab, and the showgirl thesis Daily Mail-adjacent chatter claims Swift may lace in barbed observations aimed at political antagonists—possibly Donald Trump—alongside Easter eggs that touch her inner circle, including Blake Lively. None of that is confirmed, but the pattern tracks with Swift's playbook: confessional snapshots, refracted through spectacle, then staged for maximal discourse. Add in the album's title—Showgirl—and you get a thesis about performance itself: how fame turns private struggle into public theater. What feels certain is the scale. Pre-orders are live, a reveal on New Heights is slated, and Swift has primed fans to decode every frame. As ever, she's controlling chaos with craft: teasing visuals, breadcrumbing playlists, and letting the conversation, about politics, friendship, and love—do the heavy lifting until the curtain lifts on the full tracklist. Kitne Aadmi Thhe: Music stores remember the record that changed the industry for ever

Kolkata: In 1975, the release of 'Sholay' marked a pivotal moment in Bollywood, not just for its groundbreaking action sequences but for its revolutionary approach to film soundtracks. The film's music and dialogues became a cultural phenomenon, especially in Kolkata, where fans eagerly played the LPs and EPs until they wore out. This was the first time Bollywood embraced stereo sound, offering an immersive auditory experience that captivated audiences. Shiladitya Chaudhury, a music enthusiast and composer, recalls how the soundtrack was already a sensation before the film hit theaters. Radio Ceylon teased audiences with songs like 'Koi Haseena Jab Mil Jaaye', but it was the inclusion of Gabbar Singh's iconic dialogues and RD Burman 's evocative background score on vinyl that truly set it apart. This was more than just music; it was a sonic experience that fans relished on their home record players. Polydor Records, a newcomer in the Indian market, took a bold step by purchasing the music rights from the Sippys for Rs 5 lakh, outbidding industry giant HMV. This gamble paid off spectacularly, as Polydor sold five times the number of records needed to break even, cementing its place in the industry. Prem Gupta, from the Symphony shop in New Market, noted that 'Sholay' was instrumental in establishing Polydor's reputation. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Villas In Dubai | Search Ads Get Quote Undo You Can Also Check: Kolkata AQI | Weather in Kolkata | Bank Holidays in Kolkata | Public Holidays in Kolkata | Gold Rates Today in Kolkata | Silver Rates Today in Kolkata The soundtrack's success was due in large part to RD Burman's innovative use of music. His compositions were ahead of their time, incorporating French horns, eerie cello wails, and even beer-bottle percussion. The six-track stereo recording was a rarity in India, requiring meticulous coordination and international collaboration for mixing. This technical achievement transformed the Indian film music scene, setting a new standard for future productions. The release of LPs featuring the film's dialogues was another groundbreaking move. Fans were not only captivated by the music but also by the memorable lines delivered by characters like Jai, Veeru, Basanti, and Gabbar Singh. These dialogues became an integral part of the film's appeal. While 'Sholay' wasn't technically the first 70mm or six-track stereo film, it was the first to combine these elements with a blockbuster narrative. The result was a sensory feast, with every sound meticulously crafted to enhance the viewing experience. Amit Sarkar, a sound engineer, highlighted how even the fight effects were reworked in London to deliver the satisfying 'dishum dishum' that audiences loved. The film's music also broke new ground with the use of a synthesizer in 'Yeh Dosti', signaling the playful rivalry and friendship between Jai and Veeru. Nearly five decades later, the sounds of 'Sholay' continue to resonate in popular culture. From Gabbar's gravelly 'Kitne aadmi the?' to Burman's galloping themes, the film's soundtrack remains a testament to the transformative power of music in cinema. In 1975, 'Sholay' wasn't just a film release; it was a revolution on vinyl. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
