
Tim Spector says eating at specific time of day is 'worst thing you can do' for weight loss
The leading nutritionist has urged against snacking after a certain time, as it could wreak havoc on your metabolism and cholesterol.
Leading nutritionist Tim Spector has warned against late night snacking, deeming it the 'worst thing you can do' for weight loss. Sitting down with fellow Zoe nutritionist Dr Sarah Berry on the Better Brain podcast, the scientists discussed the importance of timing when to eat, and how eating after a certain time in the evening can damage your health.
Tim Spector is one of the world's top 100 most-cited scientists, boasting over 702K followers on Instagram. Speaking to Dr Berry, he emphasised the science behind the timing of when we eat, and how late night snacking, particularly eating after 9pm, can be damaging to cholesterol levels and metabolic health.
Dr Berry explained: "If you are eating later, typically after about eight or nine o'clock at night, you tend to wake up the next day more hungry, which is really counter-intuitive. And it's associated with poorer metabolic health, so higher cholesterol, higher waist circumference, and poorer insulin."
Spector added: "Late night snacking is the worst thing you can do in terms of timing."
The way our bodies process food changes with our circadian rhythm, which is a 24-hour cycle that regulates biological processes such as sleep, temperature and hormonal activity.
At night, our insulin sensitivity drops and our digestive system winds down, meaning that our bodies have a harder time breaking down food and managing glucose and fat.
As Dr Berry explained, eating after 9pm can disrupt this rhythm, which can have negative effects on our metabolic health, cholesterol levels- and our waistlines.
Intermittent fasting is one way many people choose to regulate their eating times to improve their metabolic health and lose weight.
This diet involves eating during a certain window of time every day, and fasting for the rest. The late Dr Michael Mosley was a driving force in the popularity of this regime.
Some people choose to eat only for an eight-hour window per day, and fast for 16 hours- for example, eating breakfast at 11am and dinner at 7pm, with lunch in between.
However, some take this diet to the extreme, and set themselves an eating window as small as six hours, which Spector and Berry wouldn't necessarily recommend.
Berry said: "You don't need to go to these like, crazy regimes. You see people doing these regimes where they're eating within six hours. That might work for some people, but I want to go out in the evening."
These diets can impact our social lives, for example, if we have plans to go out for a meal after our 'eating window' has closed for the day.
The scientist continued: "You never have a social life, you can never have a meal with friends and family."
Spector added that these extreme intermittent fasting regimes are often not sustainable.
He explained: "There's the ultimate scientific time [of when you choose to eat], but what's really important is the time you can sustain this."
So, while we should be conscious of the times of day we choose to eat, and should avoid eating after 9pm, it's important to follow a sustainable regime that suits your lifestyle, social life and body clock.

MARTEL MAXWELL: Dundee 'weight-loss wave' has me tempted by shortcuts
As summer approaches and holidays are planned, it is not unusual to notice a friend – or maybe two – looking fabulous. You do a double take when you see them – they look younger, fresher and thinner. The kind of dramatic weight loss that is transformative. Middle-age spread, pot belly, and puffy face gone. But here's the thing. And it's quite a thing. I'm double taking all the time. Give me any gathering of people in Dundee – school pick-up, kids' football match or a night out – and it's like a Slimming World magazine. Many will have found that oft elusive motivation to shed pounds (we all know how it works), to eat less and move more. Others – and not just the ones who admit to it – will have taken the short cut of injecting the new, increasingly-prominent, weight-loss drugs which suppress appetite and work to shift excess fat. More power to both camps – no judgement. But it's getting a bit Twilighty. It's like body snatchers are sneaking down to Dundee as night falls, replacing the lumpy and bumpy with Instagram-edited version of themselves – all flat stomachs and cheekbones. Regular readers of my column will know I've touched on this before, including last year when I discussed the Ozempic boom. I told you about a friend who admitted she was on the weight-loss jabs. She all but tapped her nose as we looked around the ladies' charity lunch we were at and said: 'Mark my words, women here are on it.' She told me she'd developed a sixth sense in telling who was on the medication. My friend was brilliantly honest, explaining how she paid for the jabs and how she couldn't shift the middle-aged spread which had taken her from a size 10 to 14. No clothes fitted and it was getting her down. She quickly lost a stone with the jabs but also admitted they affected her mood and made her a bit sick for the first few weeks. Another friend who's gone from a size 16 to 10 says she has had no side effects. She has more energy and claims the jabs took away her desire to drink as much alcohol, which was becoming a daily few glasses of wine after work. Fast forward eight months and sudden transformations are everywhere. I have also noticed an increase in people committing to sport, which is great. One friend is wild swimming twice a week while another is running ultra marathons. And one has even started her own CrossFit business – PeaceFit in Wormit. Many mutual friends attend her classes and look awesome – stronger, fitter and toned. I've noticed couples losing weight together. Going back to the jabs, I suppose it's too easy for the muffin tops like me to point a finger and say everyone's on them. But who wouldn't want a quick fix? A stone down for summer? The reintroduction of a bikini following a decade of covering up after kids and – if I'm entirely honest – dieting and sporadic exercise interspersed with occasional gluttony… I'm tempted myself. However, if something seems too good to be true, maybe, just maybe, it is. The jury is still out, with research pointing to the possibility of health complications involved with the jabs. This can be counter-argued with the fact obesity can cause diabetes, heart problems and cancer. Shifting weight if you're over 40 has the magical plus of shifting a few years in appearance too – puffy faces and pot bellies begone. Some of the people I'm seeing seem to have had a magical elixir of youth. If I sound envious, I probably am. As a skirt, it'll work wonders with a baby tee and elevated flip flops on holiday, while a boho blouse and cowboy boots will put you in a festival state of mind no matter if you're heading to Glastonbury or not. The Lululemon website proclaims that the dress is 'voted most versatile', and if I'm being honest, we're inclined to agree. As with most viral hits, the 2-in-1 maxi is also selling out fast, so if you manage to find your size in stock, we suggest you skip the hesitation. A quick Google search for 'wedding guest outfits' produces dozens of brands' standalone pages dedicated solely to this category. Frankie Bridge is slammed by fans for 'OTT' wedding guest dress - as people warn 'don't upstage the bride' But as you scroll through the likes of Club L, Oh Polly and River Island, you'll find that the dresses and gowns — yes, Gen Z wear full-on gowns now — are better suited to the Love Island finale than a wedding in your local country house hotel. And, like most trends, we have celebrities to blame. Advertisement When Dani Dyer wed footballer Jarrod Bowen last week, guest and fellow Love Islander Georgia Steel was slated for wearing what looked like a revealing white dress to her pal's big day. After Georgia posted a snap on TikTok of the lace-trimmed Miss Circle number she wore, the trolls came out in force, bashing her for picking what was in fact a 'soft beige' dress. 'Wearing white to a wedding?' questioned one, while another waded in with: 'Way too bridal for a wedding.' And Georgia isn't alone. Two months ago, White Lotus actress Sydney Sweeney came under fire for the 'inappropriate' dress she wore to her Anyone But You co-star Glenn Powell's sister's wedding. As long as they aren't also wearing a long veil (cropped veils on fascinators are allowed), who cares? Especially during summer, when every other dress on the high street is some shade of white. No one at the wedding is going to mistake someone else as the bride. It's the bride's name on the invite and her kissing the groom — so no need for the unnecessary uproar. However, what I would take issue with is the plunging neckline and lingerie-style basque of Sydney's outfit and, in Georgia's case, the fact her lacy dress is practically see-through. Don't get me wrong, Sydney is a knock-out, and if I looked like that, I'd be wearing sexy numbers, too — just not to a wedding. And wearing a tailored pencil midi dress to sit on a bale of hay in a field will make you stick out like a sore thumb. I get it. I've been there myself and it's a minefield. Keep it classy Cast your mind back to happier times when Meghan Markle and Prince Harry got married. Cindy Crawford's daughter, actress Kaia Gerber, also got it right when she wore a classy, long-sleeved dress from Reformation to a friend's 2018 wedding in Miami, Florida. At the time, the navy, slit-leg frock retailed for £180, proving that even supermodels with designer brands at their fingertips can look amazing in high street buys. A big emerging trend on the high street this wedding season seems to be minimal frocks with slinky scarves, which are intended to be worn draped down your back, not wrapped around you like a winter woollen.
