Google releases new Android software after announcing its new hardware

Phone Arena17 hours ago
It wasn't just new hardware that Google introduced today with the introduction of the Pixel 10 series. The company also released some software as it pushed out Android 16 QPR2 Beta 1. This is the first Beta release for the Quarterly Platform Release (aka Pixel Feature Drop) that is expected to be dropped by Google in December. The Android 16 QPR1 Beta release cycle concluded with the Beta 3.1 update that Google pushed out five days ago. The Android 16 QPR1 release is expected to take place sometime in September. Android 16 QPR2 Beta 1 is software version (BP41.250725.006) and it can be installed on the Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 6a, Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7a, Pixel Fold, Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 8a, Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, Pixel 9 Pro Fold, Pixel 9a, and Pixel Tablet. The size of the file is 613MB on my Pixel 6 Pro , and you can install it on an eligible Pixel by going to Settings > System > Software updates > System update .
The Tensor G5-powered Pixel 10 has just been announced, and it's already available for pre-order at Amazon with a sweet $100 gift card. Reserve yours before this promo expires. The biggest change so far in Android 16 QPR2 Beta 1 are the new buttons for themed icons found in the Wallpaper & style page that you can access by tapping the Settings button on your Pixel. After you get to the Wallpaper & style page, tap on the Home screen option and then on Icons. After installing the new Beta release, you'll find three options under Icons: Default-keeps the icons in the default theme that you are probably used to seeing.
Minimal-this draws the main color theme from your wallpaper and uses it to create a new theme for your icons.
Create-while this button doesn't do anything at the moment, it is the most intriguing because it suggests that users will be able to create custom icons in the future. Pressing this button now brings up a little notification that says, "App isn't installed."
By the way, if you were thinking about leaving the Beta program and receiving the stable version of QPR1 without having to wipe your device, you can do it by opting out of the QPR Beta program before you install QPR2 Beta 1.
To opt-out, tap this link to head to the Android Beta for Pixel website. Press the rectangle that says, "View your eligible devices," and you'll be sent to a page where you can opt-out of the QPR Beta program. But do not install the new QPR2 Beta 1 update. Instead, wait for the stable version of QPR1 to be released. If you've already installed QPR2 Beta 1, do not opt-out of the Beta program or else you'll be required to wipe your phone.
This is so important, I'm going to type it again in caps.
TO AVOID HAVING TO WIPE YOUR DEVICE, YOU CAN OPT OUT OF THE QPR BETA PROGRAM. BUT ONCE YOU DO, REFRAIN FROM INSTALLING TODAY'S QPR2 BETA 1 UPDATE. ONCE THE STABLE QPR1 RELEASE IS DROPPED, YOU CAN INSTALL IT.

T-Mobile changes its lost/stolen phone policy for reps because of T-Life

T-Mobile continues to make life harder for its reps. We've told you before about the metrics they are required to meet every month. This has led some of them to add accessories, insurance, chargers, cases, protective screen covers, and new lines to customers' orders without their consent. Lately, T-Mobile has its reps hung up over the T-Life app that could end up replacing the carrier's retail stores and its human sales crew. Today, an interesting post on social media caught my eye. According to this post, which was apparently written by a T-Mobile rep most likely working out of a corporate-run location, retail management at T-Mobile just received some news from those toiling in the executive suite. When a customer comes into a T-Mobile store with a broken phone or complains that his phone has been lost, the rep will open a new device and hope that the customer has enough equipment credit or the ability to make the down payment for the replacement. The dreaded T-Life app, public enemy number one among T-Mobile reps. | Image credit-PhoneArena Probably the part of this process that will upset the reps most is that they are told to load all of the customer's personal information on the new device. Then, they have to log in through T-Life on the new phone and make the upgrade through the app. Now you might expect that this is a process that has been tested by T-Mobile under real-life conditions, and it was. But as the rep wrote on Reddit, it was tested for " not a month, not 3 weeks" but for only seven days in one city. And yet, the carrier plans on rolling this out nationwide! Our company has lost touch with you guys. To the T-Mobile front line who HAS recently been told if you don't do this T-Life stuff you will be fired, and AI will replace you now or later, we have to fight this NOW!" Another T-Mobile rep who works in one of the carrier's Experience stores (which supposedly focus on educating the customer as opposed to making quick sales) said that these locations received the same memo. This rep typed, "Experience stores got the same message. I feel like this needs to get pushed up the compliance chain." Another rep working at a corporate-run location said that the store's Retail Associate Manager just received the memo as well. One of the responses came from a T-Mobile salesperson who didn't care whether the company was opening replacement phones before getting paid for them. This person wrote, "If that's what they want then so be it, not my inventory so idc. Them snatch and grabs about to go crazy." T-Mobile reps are upset about the T-Life app taking over their jobs. Perhaps the best comment follows: "I would have loved to have been in the meeting where they were deciding to handle the problem of how to do lost/stolen phone replacements through 1: "Ooh! I know. The store could have a few old, surplus tablets with T-life on 'em and customers could log in and do the transaction using one of "Interesting idea. Any other proposals?"Person 2: "Oooh! I have a better idea! Let's have the customer open the retail packaging of a new phone that they haven't bought, transfer all the customer's info to it, install T-life, and have them do the upgrade on that device! Most customers might qualify to actually complete the transaction, too!" Boss: "Brilliant! Let's go with that. Here, have some stock options." Personally, I believe that T-Mobile was forced to make this change after a customer with a broken phone recently came into a T-Mobile store and the rep refused to sell him a new phone because he couldn't access T-Life with the broken handset. So how are T-Mobile reps feeling these days about the changes they are asked to make? Well, the title of the original post in the thread ought to give you a good idea. It's titled, "New bs thing for reps coming soon."

Spotify is finally making music sharing on Instagram good with two new features rolling out today

Spotify is putting an end to one of the most awkward experiences on Instagram. Until now, whenever you shared a song from the music streaming platform to an Instagram story, you were only getting a quiet poster and no music at all. With Spotify's latest feature update, that's about to change. The music streaming service announced two new integrations with Instagram. One adds audio previews to songs shared to Instagram Stories, and the other allows real-time music sharing in Instagram Notes. As the name 'audio preview' suggests, when you share a Spotify song, a short audio snippet will be automatically added to your story. That way, your friends will be able to hear what you're sharing. If you stumble upon a shared song that you like, you can tap the song's title at the top of the story and choose 'View Song Details'. That would take you to the song's page on Instagram, from which you can save the track to your Liked Songs on real-time music sharing feature allows you to automatically share what you're listening to on Spotify directly to Instagram Notes. If you activate the feature while you're playing music, the note will update right away. If you're not playing anything, the note will update automatically if you play something within 30 minutes. To use the real-time music sharing feature, you must follow the following steps: On Instagram, tap Messages on the top right of your feed Tap Note... above your profile picture on top of your messages Tap the symbol when creating a note If you haven't linked your Spotify account, tap Link Spotify In the audio browser, tap 'Share from Spotify.' If you want, you can add text to your note Tap 'Share' to post your note Both features are available globally for Spotify and Instagram users on Android and iOS. As someone who listens to a lot of music, I love sharing my favorite discoveries with my friends, including on Instagram. Spotify's sharing options were already ahead of all other music streaming services, but this makes it all even better. The result is that I have one more reason to stick with Spotify instead of Apple Music, even if I'm looking for a way out. Good news everyone! Google Pixel Watch 4 is the first with satellite communication support

Yesterday during its big launch event Google unveiled the Pixel Watch 4 alongside the Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, and Pixel 10 Pro Fold. The watch is powered by Qualcomm's newly announced Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 chipset, and one of the perks of this chip is its support for Narrowband Non-Terrestrial Network, aka satellite connectivity. So the Pixel Watch 4 should let you send and receive messages without a mobile carrier connection, provided you have some sort of plan that includes that. Its bigger battery provides an advertised 30 hours of use on the 41mm version and 40 hours on the 45mm iteration and that should also come in handy when you're trying to use satellites to communicate. We are of course expecting to see other Wear OS devices using Qualcomm's new chipset and its satellite communication support in the future, but for now, this is the only one. If you're interested in Google's new devices, don't miss our comprehensive pricing breakdown for the entire family.
