Justin Rose claims FedEx St Jude Championship on third play-off hole
But four birdies from the 14th catapulted him to the top of the leaderboard and he just missed a 13-footer at the last to win outright.
He produced two more birdies in three play-off holes – one a clutch effort after Spaun had holed from distance – with the second from 14ft after Spaun was half that distance away proving decisive as his opponent's attempt to extend the contest raced past.
'That was an amazing last 90 minutes. I never stopped believing,' Rose said in his post-round interview.
'I played unbelievable golf coming down the stretch and had so much fun with it. JJ dropped a bomb on me (at the second extra hole), it was a lot of fun.
'When I bring my best I know I'm good enough to play against the best players in the world. This is going to be a fun one for us to celebrate.'
The play-off was packed with drama from the start as Rose – who barely cleared the lake with his drive – gave himself an identical 13-foot putt to the one he missed to win the tournament, but it burned the edge of the cup.
Playing the hole again, Rose hit to eight feet but Spaun recreated his US Open final green heroics with a monster birdie, forcing the Englishman to hold his nerve.
The hole location was re-cut for the third attempt to avoid shadows and Spaun duly hit it to seven feet but Rose, who had lost his previous four play-offs including, like Spaun, to Rory McIlroy this year, dramatically turned the tables by holing his 14ft birdie and Spaun fired past.
Rose's joy meant more heartbreak for Fleetwood, who blew another chance to break his PGA Tour duck at the 162nd attempt with a poor finish.

The Ryder Cup team-mates had holidayed together in Portugal last week, but failed to spark each other into life in the final group.
Fleetwood did not make a birdie until holing his longest putt of the week from 33 feet at the 12th to put him back in a share of the lead.
Birdies at the 13th and 15th edged him two in front on 16 under, but as he was escaping with a par after chipping across and off the green with his third at the 16th, Spaun was tying the lead with a birdie at 17.
Fleetwood's weak attempt at a seven-foot par putt at the 17th never threatened and needing a birdie at the last just to make a play-off, he drove into a bunker and missed the green with his approach.
'I'm obviously going to be disappointed. There's a lot of positives to take but it won't feel like that right now,' said Fleetwood, whose 29th top-five PGA Tour finish is 11 more than any other player without a win over the last 40 years.
'I'm just going to look at what I feel like I could have done and how close it was.'
Scheffler, without his regular caddie Ted Scott who returned home due to a family emergency, finished a shot outside the play-off after two birdies in his final three holes.
Jordan Spieth's Ryder Cup hopes were dealt a blow after he dropped out of the top 50 of FedEx Cup rankings and missed the cut for next week's penultimate event after dumping his approach to the last into the water, ending his season and, at 27th in the United States' rankings, likely his Ryder Cup hopes.

Neil Lennon asked 'is the title race over' as Ally McCoist bites his tongue at cheeky Rangers write-off
Lennon and McCoist discussed the Glasgow sides' starts to the Premiership season live on radio Neil Lennon wasn't having it when quizzed on whether the Premiership title race is over already And host Ally McCoist refused to 'bite' when the same question was put to him live on radio. Dunfermline boss Lennon joined McCoist on his morning talkSPORT show and, when the Celtic and Rangers heroes get together, there's no points for guessing the headline topic of conversation. The two discussed the Glasgow sides' results over the weekend after Celtic cruised past Aberdeen with a 2-0 win to continue their 100 per cent start, while Rangers faltered at home to Dundee with a 1-1 draw. It means that, after two games of the season, four points already separate the Old Firm rivals – while it's Hearts who lead the way on goal difference at the top. McCoist's co-host Ray Parlour was in a mischievous mood and he'd been trying to get a rise out of the Ibrox legend throughout the morning. When Lennon came on though, he wasn't having the idea that a four-point gap between the sides at this stage is insurmountable. He said: "No, it's early days. With Rangers, they've got to qualify for the Champions League, so I always think there are mitigating circumstances this time of year. "They're playing tough European games midweek then having to play teams who are really motivated at the weekend, I've had problems myself in those sort of spells. "Russell's just in the door. He's still got to put his imprint on the team. "But the bloodlust up here, it's ridiculous. One or two games and people are questioning his tenure. Then on the other side of the city, people are questioning Brendan after a perfect start to the season. You've just got to be laser-focused and try to block out the noise. It's ridiculous!" Speaking earlier on the show, McCoist read out a script to lead into some Premiership chat and he was adamant the writers in the production room were at the wind-up. He read out, "Celtic continued their perfect start to the Scottish Premiership season...' before interrupting: "Hang on they've won two games, man! What's going on? Perfect start? He's trying to wind me up in there!" He continued reading: "Winning 2-0 at Aberdeen, who themselves now sit rock bottom. Russell Martin, meanwhile, made unwanted history at Rangers as they failed to win in their opening two league games for the first time since 1989 - which I was probably responsible for - drawing 1-1 at home with Dundee. Is the title race already over?" After finishing the script, McCoist then said: "Give it a break lads, come on!" That was when Parlour announced that Lennon would be coming on the show as he said: "We'll be asking Neil Lennon if the Scottish title race is already over!" A laughing McCoist replied: "I'm not biting!"

Walsh then became the club's youngest-ever European starter the following week in the second leg. He was named in the line-up alongside the likes of Reece James, Jadon Sancho and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall at Stamford Bridge. The 16-year-old was preparing for his GCSEs when he made his full debut. At the time, head coach Enzo Maresca said: "His talent is very good. Technique is fantastic. I really like him. Between the lines is good, you can see immediately he has something. "For sure at 17, 18, he needs to work hard and continue. I like also the personality, he's worked with us during the season. "He's not shy, he's asking for the ball, he's shouting and talking. I like it, he's a good player." Walsh missed out on a place in Chelsea's travelling Club World Cup squad earlier this summer. The teenager shared the pitch with Real Madrid icon and six-time Champions League winner Luka Modric, who is 23 years older than him, during the 4-1 win. Walsh joined Chelsea at the age of seven and progressed through the age groups before making his first-team debut last season. He spent much of the 2024-25 campaign playing for the Under-18s. The midfielder scored four goals and provided two assists for the U18s last term. He has also made 11 appearances for England at youth level.

Man Utd fan Luke Littler makes bold season prediction – 'Most clubs won't expect it'
Manchester United endured one of their worst-ever seasons in 2024/25, finishing 15th in the Premier League, but Luke Littler is backing them to bounce back this season Manchester United are heading back into the top five of the Premier League this season, according to Luke Littler. United finished a miserable 15th in 2024/25 as Ruben Amorim endured a dreadful debut campaign, but Littler is convinced he will turn things around. The club are attempting to rebuild after a dreadful start to the Amorim era which concluded with their lowest league finish since the 1989/90 campaign and with a defeat in the Europa League final. Amorim managed to secure just seven wins from 27 league games and his hapless side scored just 44 goals in 38 Premier League matches altogether after he took over from Erik ten Hag in November. United have reacted by splashing over £200million to sign Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko in the summer transfer window. There have been some encouraging performances in pre-season and United fan Littler is feeling upbeat ahead of their first match of the season against Arsenal on Sunday. 'I'm very excited. I think we are underdogs,' he said. 'Obviously from last season, I don't think anything worse can happen – unless we finish 16th. But yeah, I think it is going to be a very interesting season. Most clubs won't expect it but I'm expecting top five.' United have only finished in the top five in the Premier League once in the past four years, having fallen way behind their rivals. The defeat by Tottenham in the Europa League final means they will not play in any European competition this season and will be able to solely concentrate on domestic matters. Amorim has tried to completely change the way United play, and despite poor results so far, he remains confident it will work eventually. 'I know it's a massive gap from where we finished, but it's Manchester United. We need to return to Europe,' he told BBC Sport recently. Asked if they could win the Premier League and Champions League once more, Amorim replied: 'I have no doubts. There are some things you cannot buy that this club has: pedigree, history, fans. We have money without the Champions League. With all these things, if we have a different culture, we can return to our place.' United completed their pre-season with a 1-1 draw against Fiorentina on the weekend and Amorim believes he now has more options to choose from. 'That (a selection headache) is a good thing, it is supposed to be like that, not like last season that we have to struggle to put 11 players on the pitch,' he said. 'This is the normal thing so I need to think and they [the players] need to fight during the week, so they can change my mind, I have an idea but they will change my mind during the week. 'It is going to be tough because we try to arrange a full week of training, so we will have two really strong sessions with time to work and then we are going to break a little bit and then two days to really think about the strategy for the game and we will be ready.'
