Cape Town to spend $3.9bln on energy projects
The city's mayoral committee member for energy, Xanthea Limberg, outlines the way the energy directorate will spend R71.2bn over the next three years.
'Some of the investment will be in streetlighting, curbing energy theft and vandalism and focusing on load-shedding protection while investing in the growing energy needs of Cape Town.
'Our programme to upgrade and enhance the capacity of our Steenbras plant at an amount of more than R1.2 bn over the next three years is making significant progress, and we are also taking great strides in our solar PV programmes.
'This year, some R1.3bn capital expenditure has been set aside, including R75.5m on our street and public lighting programme. In line with our energy efficiency strategy, we are expanding our LED streetlight replacement programme with an R160m injection over the next three years.
'We have also set aside a total project amount of R183m for our pioneering small-scale embedded generation programme and some R57m to enhance the power output capabilities of the soon-to-be-completed Atlantis Solar plant with our first battery storage project.
'We are also investing in various critical infrastructure upgrades across the metro, such as Bellville, Grassy Park, Gugulethu, Oakdale, Melkbos, Paardevlei, Woodstock, Triangle and Monte Vista, among others.
'We are also looking at investments in the low-voltage depots in Hout Bay and Noordhoek. The city continues its investment in new metering infrastructure with some R100m in the 2025/26 financial year, topping more than R320m for the programme in total over three years.
'Over the next three years, we will continue to focus on energy security and diversification of electricity supply, protecting our electricity infrastructure and endorsing responsible tariff reforms, in alignment with the National Treasury's tariff reform programmes to realise our stated ambition of a future-fit, sustainable and resilient utility.
'The city is taking part in the treasury's tariff reform strategies, to ensure the sustainability of our services and that of our services are cost-reflective while giving customers more control over the usage components of the tariffs.
'We can already see some of these changes reflected in our budget and tariff structures, and we will see more of this in the years to come as all metros and utilities align their tariff structures with the proposed National Treasury reforms."

Global startups lead AI-driven energy innovation at Shell.ai Futures Pitch 2025
Doha, Qatar: The Qatar Edition of Futures Pitch 2025 competition, held for the first time in Qatar through a strategic partnership between Qatar Science and Technology Park (QSTP), a member of Qatar Foundation, and Qatar Shell Research and Technology Centre (QSRTC), has recognised three pioneering startups for their innovative digital energy solutions. The competition offered a platform for early-stage technology companies to tackle critical energy challenges by leveraging Shell's expertise in artificial intelligence (AI) and energy technologies and QSTP's dynamic innovative ecosystem. This year's edition attracted 86 applications from 27 countries, with 40% of submissions originating from the Middle East and North Africa region. Startups were invited to develop AI-powered solutions across three challenge areas: identifying and quantifying supply chain risks, enhancing data quality for intelligent asset workflows, and applying AI-enabled smart fault diagnosis through HAZOP analysis. Out of the 86 applications, 14 startups were shortlisted for their exceptional ideas and technological promise. After a three-round evaluation process, three finalists emerged: Prewave from Austria in the supply chain risk category, MAXIML from India in the asset data quality challenge, and from the US in the HAZOP-based fault diagnosis category. These finalists presented their solutions to a panel of experts including Shell senior leaders and the president of QSTP. This year's first prize was awarded to MaxiML for its innovative solution in enhancing data quality for intelligent asset workflows. The second prize went to Prewave, while UptimeAI secured third place. Winners received cash prizes and access to funding opportunities of up to USD 100,000 to develop a proof-of-concept, along with support from QSTP's innovation ecosystem. The shortlisted companies represented a strong and diverse global cohort, highlighting the growing momentum behind digital transformation in the energy sector. Oil funds for ‘Big Push' will be efficiently used, Mahama tells Public Interest and Accountability Committee (PIAC)
President John Dramani Mahama has assured members of the Public Interest and Accountability Committee (PIAC) that oil revenues earmarked for his proposed $10 billion 'Big Push' infrastructure initiative will be efficiently disbursed and managed. The President gave the assurance during a courtesy call by the PIAC members. Led by its Chairman, Mr Constantine K.M. Kudzedzi, the Committee members visited to congratulate the President on his recent election victory and discuss matters concerning the management of Ghana's oil revenues. President Mahama outlined his government's ambitious plan to invest $10 billion over the next five years, allocating $2 billion annually, into priority infrastructure projects across the country. These projects will target key sectors, including roads, major bridges, education, and health infrastructure, as well as areas vital for boosting productivity in the agriculture sector. He specified that agricultural projects under the 'Big Push' would encompass irrigation schemes, construction of farmer service centres, and support for agribusiness development. The President stated that the primary sources of funding for this significant policy initiative would be petroleum revenue and minerals royalties. Commending PIAC for its vital role, President Mahama praised the Committee's efforts in monitoring and ensuring transparency and accountability in the utilisation of Ghana's petroleum revenues.
