An outstanding start to the season for the Chicago Cubs starting rotation has recently been erased and it may be time for the organization to make a move to shore up the rotation.
At least that's what former major leaguer and MLB Network analyst Mark DeRosa believes Chicago should do.
DeRosa urged the Cubs organization to make a trade for 2023 NL Cy Young Award winner Sandy Alcantara.
"Cubs are real, man," DeRosa said in a video posted to X. "Let's get it done."

MIAMI, FLORIDA - JUNE 22: Sandy Alcantara #22 of the Miami Marlins pitches during the first inning against the Atlanta Braves at loanDepot park on June 22, 2025 in Miami, Florida.Alcantara missed all of last season recovering from Tommy John surgery, and it has taken him quite a bit of time to get adjusted back to the major leagues.
He has a 6.69 ERA across 15 starts, a rough start to the season for a pitcher who was the best in baseball just two seasons ago. The last four outings, though, have been much better.
Alcantara has allowed just seven runs across his last four starts, compared to 48 in his first 11 stars of the season. He's gone at least six innings in three of the four starts, as well as striking out four-plus in each of the four outings.

Prior to the four straight quality starts, Alcantara's season ERA was all the way up to 8.47 and it looked as if he may completely disappear off the trade block. Now, with his mini resurgence, he will more than likely once again become a viable option for teams looking to improve their starting rotation.
It is already known that the Cubs will be looking to upgrade their pitching staff at the trade deadline. What better way to do that than with the addition of a former Cy Young winner?
It will be intriguing to see how the market for Alcantara pans out, as well as seeing what prospects an organization will have to ship away to acquire him.

Cubs' Owen Caissie May Be Pivotal in Sandy Alcantara Deal
Cubs' Owen Caissie May Be Pivotal in Sandy Alcantara Deal originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Chicago Cubs have emerged as one of the strongest teams in baseball, heading into Tuesday's matchup against the St. Louis Cardinals with a 46-32 record, the fourth-best in the league. Advertisement Many of their winning contributions have come from their offense, with Pete Crow-Armstrong, Seiya Suzuki, and Kyle Tucker making up an outfield whose bats are collectively as potent as any other such unit in MLB. Pitching, however, has been one of the team's sore spots, with three starters (Shota Imanaga, Justin Steele, and Matthew Boyd) out injured. The Cubs, looking to bolster their roster ahead of a postseason push, will likely look to address starting rotation-related needs ahead of the trade deadline. Matt Spiegel, co-host of the "Spiegel & Holmes" show on 670 The Score, believes the Cubs could be on the doorstep of finding a solution to their problem by acquiring Miami Marlins starting pitcher Sandy Alcantara, a Cy Young Award winner and two-time All-Star. "I think the Cubs want Sandy Alcantara, and I think the Marlins are just about ready to do it," Spiegel said. "He is in a better headspace than he was when he was fresh back. The changeup is a work in progress, but he's figuring it out with what he has over these last four of five starts. "[MLB insider] Jon Heyman had said this morning that the Marlins are not ready to trade him, but I'm telling you, I think they might be... And we are right at that spot in the year where they might be." Miami Marlins pitcher Sandy Alcantara (22) pitches in the first inning against the Washington NationalsJim Rassol-Imagn Images Spiegel added that, for such a deal to be made, the Cubs may need to part ways with a prized asset they have held onto in previous trade discussions: Owen Caissie, the second-best prospect in the franchise's minor-league system, according to MLB Pipeline. Advertisement "The guy that the Marlins wanted for Jesus Luzardo from the Cubs is Owen Caissie. The Cubs would not do it, and Luzardo ends up with the Phillies," Siegel. "I would deal Owen Caissie for Sandy Alcantara." Caissie, a 22-year-old outfield prospect, is in the midst of his second season with the Cubs' Triple-A affiliate, the Iowa Cubs. Across 238 at-bats this season, Caissie is slashing .265/.368/.868 with 11 home runs, 18 doubles, and 32 RBIs. Alcantara, meanwhile, is having a resurgent stretch of starts after a slow beginning to the 2025 season. His ERA is down to 6.69 after being just under 8.50 at the end of May, and he possesses a 4-8 record with 59 strikeouts in 74 innings pitched. NEW YORK (AP) — Chicago Cubs pitcher Anhuar Garcia was suspended for 60 games Tuesday by Major League Baseball under the minor league drug program following a positive test for the performance-enhancing substance Methenolone. He signed with the Cubs on Dec. 15 for a $10,000 bonus. Garcia is the seventh player suspended this year for a positive test, the fifth under minor league programs. Cubs Trade Idea Sends Kevin Alcántara, Jack Neely for Seth Lugo
Cubs Trade Idea Sends Kevin Alcántara, Jack Neely for Seth Lugo originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Chicago Cubs should find themselves in the market for a starting pitcher at the trade deadline. Advertisement An impressive start to the season has them at 46-32 and atop the National League Central. The Cubs have dealt with Justin Steele's absence swimmingly and have navigated this stretch with Shota Imanaga. But, even with Jameson Taillon (3.84 ERA, 4.82 FIP), Matthew Boyd (2.84 ERA, 3.66 FIP), Colin Rea (4.42 ERA, 4.77 FIP), and Cade Horton (3.73 ERA, 3.78 FIP) holding down the fort, another top arm would propel this team into the upper echelon of contenders. According to Kiley McDaniel and Jeff Passan of ESPN, Kansas City Royals righty Seth Lugo is a top trade deadline candidate and a natural fit in Chicago. Here is what that trade could look like: Advertisement Cubs receive: RHP Seth Lugo Royals receive: OF Kevin Alcántara (No. 4), RHP Jack Neely (No. 15) Kansas City Royals pitcher Seth Lugo (67) delivers during the first inning against the San Diego Padres at Petco Poroy-Imagn Images Lugo, who is set to make $15 million this season and next, has a player option for 2026. This deal would likely require a contingency plan for Chicago to proceed. Alcántara and Neely are too much to give up for a rental. But, a year-and-a-half of Lugo could be worth diminishing some of the farm system. Lugo has been excellent in his 10th MLB season, going 4-5 with a 2.93 ERA, a 4.26 FIP, and 68 strikeouts to 23 walks over 83 innings for Kansas City. He is 35 years old, and this would be a risky, all-in move for the Cubs, but he could also be the key piece to this puzzle. Advertisement The Royals are hanging around at 38-40, but ace Cole Ragans is out with a left rotator cuff strain, and should he remain sidelined for an extended period, they could punt on the campaign.
