Netflix Behind Grenfell Tower Documentary That Will 'Connect The Long & Disturbing Chain Of Events' Leading To Disaster
Netflix and British docs producer Rogan Productions are to attempt to 'connect the long and disturbing chain of events' that led to the disastrous Grenfell Tower fire in London.
The pair are teaming on a Grenfell [working title] doc feature that will air later this year and was revealed last night at the Next on Netflix event in London.

The feature will give a voice to survivors, bereaved families and firefighters, while 'tracing the chain of events that led to the disaster,' according to Netflix. In 2017, the Grenfell Tower fire claimed the lives of 72 people and has led to a huge deal of introspection for the past eight years including a major national inquiry.
Netflix UK boss Anne Mensah said last night: 'From pure entertainment to the most important stories – this year you will see a number of big British documentary series and films on Netflix UK. These are the important stories that demand to be told. For instance, Grenfell. For the first time, we pull together the disturbing chain of events that led to that tragedy. This is the story behind the headlines and is guaranteed to make you angry.'
A number of Grenfell docs have aired down the years including a Ben Anthony feature for the BBC, a Steve McQueen art movie and a series for Channel 4 that dramatized the words spoken at the inquiry, all of which were titled Grenfell. Peter Kosminsky is currently working on a drama based on the disaster – also called Grenfell. Netflix's Grenfell EPs are James Rogan, Sandy Smith and Soleta Rogan. Director is Olaide Sadiq. Producers are Ahmed Peerbux and James Saville. Netflix recently worked with Rogan on The Final: Attack on Wembley about the rioting that took place outside Wembley Stadium at the Euro 2020 final.
Mensah and host Edith Bowman were joined by top British talent yesterday at the Next on Netflix event including Stephen Graham and Philip Barantini promoting their new one-shot thriller series Adolescence, Gareth Evans and Jessie Mei Li on Tom Hardy-starring movie Havoc and The Sidemen, whose latest reality series Inside will debut on Netflix soon.
Mensah also previewed upcoming projects including The Thursday Murder Club, Agatha Christie's The Seven Dials Mystery and Cillian Murphy-starrer Steve.
The UK has been a major hit factory for Netflix over the past 18 months or so, with five of the streamer's top 10 most-watched shows during the first half of last year coming from Mensah's team.

‘Deliciously at odds': Zachary Quinto on embodying the brilliant yet flawed Dr. Oliver Wolf in ‘Brilliant Minds'
Although there's no shortage of medical dramas on the air, Brilliant Minds sets itself apart by taking its inspiration from Oliver Sacks, the famed neurologist whose groundbreaking work was previously dramatized in the film Awakenings. Zachary Quinto jumped at the opportunity to play a version of Sacks, who is "an endlessly fascinating and influential presence in both the world of medicine and literature." That, combined with the creative team behind the show, created "an alchemy to the whole package that felt undeniable to me." Quinto plays Dr. Oliver Wolf, a socially awkward yet exceptional neurologist who utilizes unconventional techniques to treat his patients. Although Robin Williams got the opportunity to work closely with Sacks during the production of Awakenings, Quinto was unable to do the same, since Sacks died in 2015. Yet as Quinto tells Gold Derby, "there's a really unique aspect of this experience," which is that while this is inspired by a real person, "we're also creating a character who is fictional, and exists in a different time and in a different environment than the one in which the real life Oliver Sacks lived and worked. So it was kind of the best of both worlds for me as an actor, because I certainly was able to dive into copious amounts of his writing," as well as "endless interviews with him," while still making it his own. I don't think he always has the capacity to articulate or communicate as smoothly as maybe he would like to. There's something really special about embodying that. I really found that endearing and appealing about the character. At his core, he is an incredibly brilliant, dedicated, empathetic, and driven doctor, and his main thrust and motivation is really caring for his patients as fully and as generously as he can. There was something about the blending of those two qualities that was deliciously at odds. Those aren't two qualities that necessarily go hand-in-hand, and I love that about him. He's clumsy sometimes. He doesn't suffer fools. He's not interested in listening to differing perspectives. He believes what he believes," which is "every patient he treats deserves respect and dignity, and to be seen." Brendan Meadows/NBC Part of Quinto's job is making sense of the medical lingo his character rattles off as if it's second nature. Unlike other medical dramas, "You're not dramatizing gunshot wounds or heart attacks. It's all neurological cases, so it really is about delving into the mind." So, the question is, "How do I make this dialogue accessible and interesting, and humanize it and invite audiences into it?" It helps that the scripts by creator Michael Grassi and his team feature the input of on-staff medical consultants. "We all have to portray characters for whom this language is everyday jargon, and it's something that we have to be able to pass off as believable, even if the audience isn't meant to know exactly what it means because we're in the process of explaining it to them. We have to come from a place where the characters know exactly what these words mean, and that is always an interesting challenge, but it's a challenge that I really relish." Added into that are the various medical ailments that Dr. Wolf and his team of interns have to deal with week-to-week. "I can't tell you how many times I thought, 'Well, this can't be real,'" says Quinto of the scripts he received. "But then we get directed to the chapter of An Anthropologist on Mars or The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat," both books written by Sacks which served as inspiration for the series, "where he chronicled the real life parallel case." All of the cases and conditions dramatized in the show were taken from real life, some of which were treated by Dr. Sacks, and some of which "are adjacent to, or inspired by, those cases. I often felt really challenged in the many, many ways in which our brains and our minds can go astray, and the impacts of that which these patients experience." Among the most surprising patient arcs portrayed in the first season is that of a comatose John Doe who is given the ability to communicate thanks to a revolutionary brain computer. In the show's seventh episode, "The Man From Grozny," we learn that he came to American from Chechnya to flee oppression for being gay, and having told his story, he makes a surprising request for the remainder of his care. "To me, that storyline and the way that it resolved, which was not at all how I expected it to resolve when it was introduced to me as a multi-episode arc, was, I think, the most impactful personally for me," Quinto reveals, as well as "the most impactful in a lot of ways for the audience as the season unfolded." Quinto earned an Emmy nomination in 2013 for American Horror Story: Asylum, and since then has worked mostly in film and theater with occasional stints on television. As Brilliant Minds heads into its second season, he's found a renewed appreciation for "that kind of serialized storytelling that I've been away from for a long time, and I'm actually really grateful to be back to" for the first time since Heroes. "To now be involved in an ongoing series playing the same character who's going through a number of different circumstances and situations is something that I really welcome, and it's been really fulfilling for me creatively." ‘Say Nothing' star Anthony Boyle on playing IRA activist Brendan Hughes: We ‘get to the humanity as opposed to the mythology'
Portraying a real person in Say Nothing was "a great honor," Anthony Boyle tells Gold Derby about his role as renowned Irish activist Brendan Hughes. "This one felt really special, because it was so close to home. I used to walk past the mural of Brendan Hughes coming back from school, and you'd hear folk songs about the guy." Say Nothing was created by Joshua Zetumer, based on Patrick Radden Keefe's acclaimed nonfiction book Say Nothing: A True Story of Murder and Memory in Northern Ireland. Set during the height of the Troubles, the nine-part drama follows Belfast sisters Dolours Price (Lola Petticrew) and Marian Price (Hazel Doupe) as they become deeply entangled in the IRA's militant campaign. At the center of the story is the 1972 abduction and murder of Jean McConville, a widowed mother of 10, through which the series explores the emotional and ethical fallout of political violence. Boyle stars as the younger version of Hughes, a central figure during the Troubles as the officer commanding of the Belfast Brigade, leading significant operations including the 1980 hunger strike and the Bloody Friday bombings in 1972. Premiering last fall on FX on Hulu in the U.S. and Disney+ globally, Say Nothing has earned a 93 percent Rotten Tomatoes rating and several Irish Film and Television Awards, including Best Actress for Petticrew, Best Supporting Actress for Doupe, Best Supporting Actor for Tom Vaughan-Lawlor (who portrays the older Brendan Hughes), with Boyle winning the Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland IFTA Rising Star Award. Boyle, a Belfast native, brings a striking authenticity to his portrayal of Hughes, capturing both the commanding presence of a revolutionary leader and the inner turmoil of a man wrestling with the ethical complexities of armed resistance. "It's interesting, man. There's a great clip of a British army officer talking about him, and he says that 'we had the full might of the British army trying to chase down Brendan, and he just stood there in a dinner jacket and a handgun shooting back at us. You couldn't help but admire the plucky little bugger,'" he recalls. FX "They still have admiration for him. I think it just goes to show you the kind of guy he was terms of the whole charisma thing. I sort of based him off himself, obviously, and I've got an uncle called Snake who is really charismatic and really good at telling stories. You know, when you're with him in the bar, he's got this real magnetic quality. He pulls everyone, and he's got this real way speaking. I grew up in Belfast, and I would drink in the same bars that Brendan would drink in, and I know there's people that he knew," Boyle says. "This one for me felt like a very natural fit." The Northern Irish actor's performance has earned acclaim for its emotional depth, charting Hughes' journey from fervent idealist to a disillusioned figure haunted by the personal and political consequences of his actions. Boyle's layered interpretation adds profound weight to the series' examination of the human cost of political violence. "When someone dies, particularly if they're a soldier, they become mythologized and there's a sort of martyrdom around them, and there's murals of them on the wall, and they're painted and revered. And when I spoke with Josh Finan, who played Gerry Adams, it was about stripping a lot of that back," Boyle explains. "They're not paintings on the wall, they're real breathing people, and if we want to do them justice, if we want to do the story justice, you've got to bring it down and get to the humanity of them as opposed to the mythology of them."
