Minta day ago
Liverpool Football Club and its fans came together to honour the memory of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva during the Premier League opener against AFC Bournemouth. The emotional tributes were held in the wake of the brothers' tragic passing in a car accident in northern Spain in July.
Before the match kicked off, Anfield observed a minute's silence to commemorate Diogo Jota, aged 28, and Andre Silva, aged 25. The silence was a solemn moment for the Liverpool community to reflect on the loss of two beloved figures.
Fans, players, and staff stood together, united in grief and respect. This gesture extended beyond Anfield, with all Premier League matches that weekend holding moments of silence and players wearing black armbands in solidarity.
The Kop and Sir Kenny Dalglish Stand became canvases for tributes as supporters unveiled striking mosaics displaying DJ 20 and AS 30. These designs, representing Jota's number 20 shirt and Silva's age, were a powerful visual reminder of their impact.
As the mosaics rose, fans sang 'You'll never walk alone,' followed by the chant, 'Oh he wears the number 20,' echoing through the stadium. Liverpool fans make a display in the stands in memory of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva before the match before the match.
Liverpool's players paid their respects on the pitch, wearing shirts and stadium jackets adorned with a Forever 20 emblem, a tribute that will remain throughout the season.
Notably, the club also made the significant decision to retire Jota's number 20 shirt, a move finalized after consultations with Jota's wife, Rute Cardoso, and family. T
In his programme notes, manager Arne Slot stated, 'We know that this will be a very emotional occasion. The tributes that have been paid throughout the football world, and especially within the LFC community, have been truly special.'
He emphasized the club's ongoing support for Jota's family, adding, 'It is important that, as a club, we show that they will always have our love and support as they deal with this most tragic of situations. We are there for them always.'
The tributes extended beyond Liverpool, with Jota's former club, Wolverhampton Wanderers, planning their own homage during their season opener against Manchester.
On July 3, 2025, Diogo Jota, 28, and his brother Andre Silva, 25, lost their lives in a car crash on the A-52 motorway in Zamora, Spain. The accident occurred when the Lamborghini Huracan, reportedly driven by Jota, veered off the road and burst into flames after a rear tire burst during an overtaking maneuver.
Jota was on his way to Santander to catch a ferry to the UK, advised against flying due to a recent lung procedure. The crash site, near Cernadilla, showed tire marks and a destroyed guardrail, with the vehicle found charred.

Haaland fires Man City to opening win at Wolves

Manchester City signalled their intent to take back the Premier League title as Erling Haaland struck twice in a 4-0 win at Wolves on Saturday to begin their campaign. HT Image After four consecutive titles, City finished a distant third last season as Pep Guardiola's men failed to win any trophy for the first time in eight years. New signings Tijjani Reijnders, who was the star of the show at Molineux, and Rayan Cherki were also on target to give Guardiola hope his side will be back in the title race this season. Guardiola made a bold call amid ongoing uncertainty over City's goalkeeping situation. James Trafford made his first senior appearance for the club after returning for a second spell at the Etihad from Burnley. Ederson was not in the travelling squad as he is reportedly close to a move to Galatasaray, which could see City pursue a deal for out-of-favour Paris Saint-Germain 'keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. Wolves are among the favourites to be relegated after losing talisman Matheus Cunha to Manchester United. Vitor Pereira's were ultimately well beaten, but the outcome could have been very different had they made the most of an uncertain City start. Marshall Munetsi powered a header into the bottom corner but was flagged offside. Instead, the game swung decisively in City's favour with two goals in three minutes, thanks to Reijnders creativity and goal threat from midfield. The £46.5 million ($63 million) signing from AC Milan jinked through the Wolves midfield before dinking a pass into Rico Lewis, who squared for Haaland to tap in at the back post. Moments later Oscar Bobb released Reijnders to arrow in a precise finish on his left foot. Trafford did not have many saves to make, but showed his ability with his feet to begin a flowing move for City's third. The England goalkeeper cushioned a long pass into Reijnders, who played a one-two with Bobb, before cutting the ball back for a clinical Haaland finish. Haaland was denied the chance to net a hat-trick as he was replaced by Cherki 17 minutes from time. The French international took just another eight minutes to make his mark by picking out the bottom corner from outside the box. Tougher tests of this new-look City are around the corner with Tottenham, Brighton, Arsenal and Manchester United in their next four league games. But the convincing nature of victory was more like the City of old, which will strike fear into their title rivals. kca/ea GALATASARAY SPORTIF

Sunderland Make Dream Premier League Return, Thrash West Ham 3-0

Richarlison scored twice to give Tottenham manager Thomas Frank a dream home debut with a 3-0 win over Burnley on Saturday, while Sunderland shocked West Ham 3-0 on their return to the Premier League. Frank was seconds away from launching his era in charge with a trophy until a late Paris Saint-Germain revival won the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday. The former Brentford boss replaced Ange Postecoglou despite the Australian ending Spurs' 17-year trophy drought by lifting the Europa League. However, Postecoglou was undone by a miserable return of six home league wins last season as Tottenham finished just above the relegation zone in 17th. Richarlison made the most of the faith shown in him by Frank as the Brazilian turned in Mohammed Kudus' cross to open the scoring. The pair combined again on the hour in more spectacular fashion as Richarlison's bicycle kick crashed in the Ghanaian's delivery from the right. Brennan Johnson was Tottenham's hero of the Europa League final with the only goal against Manchester United and he began the new season by racing clear to slot in the third. Burnley racked up 100 points in their Championship promotion campaign last season but did little to suggest they will buck the trend of sides being relegated straight back to the second tier. For the past two seasons, all three promoted teams have gone down. However, big-spending Sunderland enjoyed a dream return to the top-flight with a second-half demolition of West Ham. Former Arsenal and Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Granit Xhaka is among pool of new signings attracted to the Stadium of Light. But it was three players key to their promotion back to the Premier League for the first time since 2017 who scored. Eliezer Mayenda's looping header gave the Black Cats lift off on the hour mark. Centre-back Dan Ballard headed in the second before Wilson Isidor rounded off a huge win in stoppage time. Newcastle miss Isak Newcastle missed the unsettle Alexander Isak as they failed to find the breakthrough against 10-man Aston Villa in a 0-0 draw at Villa Park. The Magpies were the dominant side even before Ezri Konsa's red card for bringing down Antony Gordon 24 minutes from time. Isak had not been involved during Newcastle's pre-season as he appears determined to force through a move to Liverpool, who reportedly saw a £110 million ($149 million) offer for the Swedish striker rejected. The two clubs face off in their next league match at St. James' Park on August 25. Newcastle manager Eddie Howe said he wants an end to the saga one way or another. "From my perspective, you want a resolution quickly. It's taking away the focus of the players and the supporters," said Howe "We want to be united together. We'd like a resolution, but we're not in control of that." Fulham's Rodrigo Muniz struck in the 96th minute to salvage a 1-1 draw at Brighton after Matt O'Riley's penalty put the Seagulls in front. Manchester City begin their campaign away to Wolves later on Saturday, hoping to bounce back into contenders for the title after a season to forget in 2024/25. Arsenal are not in action until Sunday when they travel to face a transformed Manchester United attack. Defending champions Liverpool began their title defence with a dramatic 4-2 win over Bournemouth on Friday thanks to late goals from Mohamed Salah and Federico Chiesa.
