BJP expels two Karnataka MLAs for six years for ‘anti-party activities'

Mint27-05-2025

The BJP on Tuesday expelled two Karnataka MLAs — S T Somashekar and A Shivaram Hebbar — for six years over alleged "anti-party activities," state party president B Y Vijayendra announced. He said the decision was made by the party's high command after extensive deliberations.
S T Somashekar represents the Yashwanthpur assembly constituency in Karnatka, while A Shivaram Hebbar represents the Yellapur constituency.
The major step has been taken due to 'repeated violations of the party discipline,' according to an official letter issued by Om Pathak, member secretary of the BJP's Central Disciplinary Committee to A Shivaram Hebbar.
'Central Disciplinary Committee of the party has considered your response to the show cause notice dated 25th March 2025 and has taken serious note of your repeated violations of the party discipline,' reads the letter.
The letter also added that the Yellapur MLA has been expelled with immediate effect.

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar criticised the BJP's actions.
'No, ST Somashekar and Shivaram Hebbar haven't raped anyone in the Vidhana Soudha. There are so many FIRs, so many investigations have taken place. Some legislators tried to inject the Opposition leader with an AIDS injection, others tried to trap Yediyurappa ji. But no action has been taken against them. I'm happy they're keeping all those 'Navaratnas' in their party,' the Deputy CM was quoted as saying by India Today.
During the March 2024 Rajya Sabha elections, BJP MLA S T Somashekar defied the party line by cross-voting in favor of Congress candidate Ajay Maken, despite a clear party whip.

Thane train accident: Activists seek new local trains from Diva to reduce overcrowding on Thane-Diva corridor

THANE: The Mumbra incident reignited long-standing demands for local trains to start from Diva, a move activists say could ease pressure on the overcrowded Thane-Diva corridor, which was second highest in commuter fall-related casualties last year. BJP MLC Niranjan Davkhare, among the first to reach Mumbra station, said commuters and activists requested him to push for Diva-originating locals. 'It's a justified demand. We will convey it to the railway administration and work towards it,' he said. Both Shiv Sena and NCP (SP) also flagged the issue, pointing out that despite a population surge in Diva over the past decade, very few trains halt there. Those that do originate from distant suburbs, leaving local commuters struggling to board. Dr Shrikant Shinde, Shiv Sena MP from Kalyan, called for launching Diva-CSMT locals and fast-tracking the extension of the fifth and sixth lines beyond Kurla. 'While the Thane-Kalyan lines helped, we now need to extend them up to CSMT to ease congestion,' he said. NCP MLA Jitendra Awhad reiterated his demand to start Diva-CSMT locals immediately. 'Mumbra and Kalwa's populations soared, but local services haven't kept up. AC locals are not the answer—trains from Kasara, Titwala, and Kalyan arrive packed, leaving no room for our commuters,' he said.

PM Modi To Meet All-Party Outreach Delegations On Op Sindoor Today

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet members of the all-party global delegation under Operation Sindoor global outreach on Tuesday at 7 pm at his official residence, Lok Kalyan Marg. According to sources, Union Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju's office informed the delegation members about the meeting. Seven groups of all party delegations, including Opposition MPs such as NCP-SCP's Supriya Sule, Congress party's Shashi Tharoor, AIMIM chief Asaddudin Owaisi, and former ambassadors, completed their diplomatic efforts to visit various world capitals and promote India's policy of zero tolerance against terrorism. The delegation was launched post Operation Sindoor, India's response to the Pahalgam attack in Jammu and Kashmir, in which 26 tourists were killed. Over 50 people, including members of Parliament from multiple political parties, former ambassadors, and former government officials, visited over 30 countries as part of India's diplomatic outreach post Operation Sindoor. Seven MPs led their respective groups, with Group 1 being led by the BJP's Baijayant Panda, which went to Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Algeria. Group 2, led by BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad, visited the UK, France, Germany, the EU, Italy, and Denmark. JD(U) leader Sanjay Kumar Jha led Group 3, which visited Indonesia, Malaysia, the Republic of Korea, Japan, and Singapore. Group 4, led by Shrikant Eknath Shinde of the Shiv Sena, visited UAW, Liberia, Congo, and Sierra Leone. Group 5, led by Shashi Tharoor of the Congress party, visited the US, Panama, Guyana, Brazil, and Colombia. Group 6, led by DMK's Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, went to Spain, Greece, Slovenia, Latvia, and Russia. Group 7, led by NCP-SCP's Supriya Sule, went to Egypt, Qatar, Ethiopia, and South Africa. The delegations, apart from putting forward India's position against terror, highlighted how Pakistan has been sponsoring terror and using it against India, and called for Pakistan to be put in the Financial Action Task Force's (FATF) grey list. Operation Sindoor was launched on May 7 in response to the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam. The Indian Armed Forces carried out targeted strikes against terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, resulting in the deaths of over 100 terrorists linked to groups such as Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Hizbul Mujahideen.

Sule sidesteps question on buzz over NCP factions reuniting

To a query on whether she will call Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar to wish him on the party's foundation day, Sule said, 'I speak to all my brothers on different occasions.' The NCP, founded by Sharad Pawar, split in July 2023 after nephew Ajit Pawar joined the then Shiv Sena-BJP coalition government. Asked if she is remembering 'dada' — her cousin and rival NCP head Ajit Pawar — on the Nationalist Congress Party's 26th foundation day on Tuesday, the Lok Sabha member told reporters that she has six brothers and she remembers them every day. Pune, Jun 10 (PTI) NCP (SP) working president Supriya Sule on Tuesday avoided a direct response on the speculation about the rival NCP factions coming together, saying she was busy with other responsibilities and had no time to discuss the party affairs. The party name and its clock symbol was given to the Ajit Pawar faction, while the one headed by the former Union agriculture minister was christened NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar). There has been speculation that the two factions could be looking at burying the hatchet and reuniting. To a query on a section of the NCP (SP) having the same feeling and Sharad Pawar saying all decisions regarding the party will be taken by her, Sule said, 'I have had no time to discuss the party affairs with party leaders or meet my family for the last 15 days.' Everyone has the right to express their views and opinions in a democracy, she added. 'NCP is an organisation founded by Sharad Pawar and is functional for 26 years. Everyone, whether they are with us or not, has contributed to the growth of the party. There was team work. I am remembering R R Patil, who is no more,' she said. Sule recently led a multi-party delegation and travelled to some of the foreign countries to convey India's stand following Operation Sindoor, The parliamentarian said she will be leaving in the afternoon for New Delhi, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet members of multi-party delegations which travelled abroad.
