Former Oakmont caddie turned dentist the feel-good story of U.S. Open Final Qualifying
Among the myriad of feel-good stories emerging out of Monday's Final Qualifying for the 125th U.S. Open at Oakmont in Pittsburgh next week, Matt Vogt tops the list.
'I knew I could do it,' he said.
Vogt, ranked 1173 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, was born in the Steel City and caddied for six years at Oakmont. He played college golf at Butler University and works as a dentist in Indianapolis. He last earned amateur ranking points with a 17th in February's Gasparilla Invitational, but after advancing through 18-hole Local Qualifying, he won the Indianapolis Open. That proved to be good prep for going to Wine Valley Golf Club in Walla Walla, Washington, where he shot a pair of 68s in 36-hole qualifying. That was good enough to be medalist at the qualifying site and earn one of two available spots in the U.S. Open.
'I feel like I'm going to wake up from a dream here in a little while and it's not going to be real but it is real,' he said on Golf Channel.
Vogt was understandably emotional during his interview and he struggled to hold back tears when he was asked about his father, who died two months ago. Vogt said he wore a ribbon on his hat in his father's honor and recalled how his father used to track his rounds online and text him after every birdie and bogey.
'I knew he was tracking me today,' Vogt said on Monday. 'I wish he was here to share it with me but I know he was watching.'
Heartwarming stuff. Expect to hear plenty more about Vogt's unique tale en route to earning one of 156 spots in the U.S. Open field from more than 10,000 golfers who signed up and attempted to play their way to Oakmont. The course has undergone a renovation since Vogt was last there for the 2021 U.S. Amateur, but it's doubtful anyone in the field will know it better than the Indianapolis dentist who is coming home to his old stomping grounds.
'I will soak up every single second of that week,' said Vogt of the Open, which gets underway on June 12. 'It's just a dream come true.'

Scottie Scheffler Fires Back on 'Misconstrued' Comments at Open

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. It's been over a month, but the comments Scottie Scheffler made before the start of the Open Championship at Royal Portrush are still fresh in the minds of many fans. It's no wonder the world No. 1 addressed the issue again in the midst of the FedEx Cup playoffs. As you may recall, Scheffler reflected before the fourth major of the season, asking "what's the point" of wanting to win every tournament he enters. These words prompted responses from major sports stars such as Lando Norris, Tom Brady and Padraig Harrington. "One of the things I felt like was maybe a bit misconstrued about my comments at the Open was that it doesn't matter to me," Scheffler said. "The question I asked was, 'why does it matter so much?'" "And that's the thing. It means a heck of a lot to me. And it's not just a game, you know? The game of golf has a lot to do with my life. It's been a ton of fun. And I look forward to hopefully competing for many years out here, but it really is a great joy. And days like today are a lot of fun." Unlike some of his colleagues, Scheffler is well known for showing very little reaction on the course, no matter the situation. He also discussed this side of his personality with Golf Central. "The way I view it is I get, you know, four or five hours each day to come out here and compete and play," he said. "And I'm going to play as hard as I can for that portion of the time. And when I go home, I'm with my family, and I try to compartmentalize my life to where when I'm at the golf course, I have my time at the golf course, and I try to be as focused as possible." After winning the BMW Championship, Scheffler is more of a favorite than ever to win the Tour Championship for the second consecutive year. The regular-season finale will be played this week at East Lake in Atlanta. The world No. 1 already has five wins this season, including two majors, one signature event and a playoff event. Iga Swiatek interview takes awkward turn after win: ‘Probably me spitting on you'

Some things are better left unsaid. Polish tennis player Iga Swiatek's post-match interview took an awkward turn Sunday when the interviewer mentioned possibly spitting on her after beating Elena Rybakina in straight sets to reach the Cincinnati Open final. 'Wait, [is that] rain?' Swiatek, 24, said as she looked up at the sky, pausing a question about facing Jasmine Paolini in the final. 'No, it's probably me spitting on you when I'm asking you a question,' the interviewer said, which drew laughter from the audience at P&G Center Court. Swiatek glossed over the remark and apologized for pausing the interview. 4 Polish tennis player Iga Swiatek's post match interview took an awkward turn when the interviewer mentioned possibly spitting on her after beating Elena Rybakina in straight sets to reach the Cincinnati Open final on August 17, 2025. Iga Swiatek wins Cincinnati Open title, defeats Jasmine Paolini

CINCINNATI -- Third-ranked Iga Swiatek captured the Cincinnati Open title for the first time by defeating No. 7 Jasmine Paolini 7-5, 6-4 on Monday night. Swiatek had failed to advance past the semifinals in her six previous appearances at the Cincinnati Open. She reached the semifinals in Cincinnati each of the past two years, but lost to eventual champions Coco Gauff in 2023 and Aryna Sabalenka in 2024. 'It means a lot to me,' Swiatek said. 'This year I really wanted it. I'm just very happy. It's nice to check off the list another tournament that I haven't won. I have friends here. It's a nice, relaxed tournament before New York." Swiatek has won all six meetings against the Italian, dropping only one set in those matches. Paolini jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first set but Swiatek roared back to go ahead 5-3. Paolini broke serve to get even at 5-5, but Swiatek closed out a first-set victory in 56 minutes. Swiatek's eighth ace of the match gave her a 5-3 lead in the second set. Paolini broke serve twice in the second set and was within 5-4, but Swiatek was able to serve out the match for her 24th career singles title. 'This season hasn't been easy," Swiatek said. 'I've had areas to improve. It's not easy to win tournaments when everyone is expecting you to.' Swiatek had seven double faults to two for Paolini. But she also had nine aces, while Paolini had none. 'When the rallies were going, I felt good on the court,' Paolini said. 'The serves were the difference. When she needed an ace, she hit an ace.' Paolini is the first Italian woman to reach the finals in Cincinnati. Since she was a qualifier at the Cincinnati Open in 2023, Paolini has reached two Grand Slam singles finals, won a Grand Slam doubles title and an Olympic gold medal. 'It was definitely a positive tournament for me,' Paolini said. 'It wasn't enough, of course. I just need to improve.' The Cincinnati Open is considered a tuneup for the U.S. Open, which begins Sunday in New York. The last two years, both the men's and women's Cincinnati Open champions went on to win the final Grand Slam tournament of the year. ___
