Woman stole almost €60k from elderly man she was supposed to be looking after

A woman has admitted stealing almost €57,000 from an elderly man in Wicklow whom she helped to look after.
Dawn Lambert (62) of St Manntan's Park, Wicklow Town pleaded guilty at a sitting of Wicklow Circuit Criminal Court to four counts of theft on dates between September 24, 2022 and June 20, 2024.
The court heard the accused had taken a total of €56,550 from an AIB account in Wicklow Town belonging to Patrick Maher.
Counsel for the DPP, James Kelly, told the court that Lambert was not an official carer but a friend of the elderly victim.
'She took advantage of the situation,' said Mr Kelly.
However, he indicated that some compensation was to be paid by the defendant.
Judge Terence O'Sullivan said he would accept Lambert's admissions as an early guilty plea.

The court heard the accused had no previous convictions.
Judge O'Sullivan directed that a probation report be prepared in the case and also sought further information about the offer of compensation.
He also ordered that a victim impact statement be sought.
The judge remanded Lambert on continuing bail to appear again before the same court in early October to fix a sentencing date.

US-based Irish businessman takes legal challenge against nearly 90 revenue and forgery offences

Illann Power filed for bankruptcy in Florida in 2022. An entrepreneur awaiting trial accused of almost 90 revenue, forgery and reckless filing of company information offences has initiated a legal challenge against his prosecution. The High Court lawsuit was filed this week by Illann Power, a Carlow businessman based in the US. Mr Power is a founder of spirits company Incubrands, which was acquired by Bacardi in 2015. He also co-created Nohovation, a start-up venture fund, and investment firm Illann Power Companies. In the judicial review proceedings, he is seeking orders restraining the DPP from continuing the prosecution and halting civil and criminal investigations related to the prosecution. The 33-year-old is also seeking orders staying administrative and judicial determinations arising from those investigations, including assessments of income tax. Businessman Illann Power. Photo: Paddy Cummins Today's News in 90 Seconds - August 21st Damages are also being sought by the businessman, who appeared on a tax defaulters list published by the Revenue Commissioners in June. Revenue said Mr Power had been penalised €781,061 by the courts for non-declaration of income tax. The entrepreneur filed for bankruptcy in Florida in 2022 with debts of just over $1m (€857m). His bankruptcy trustee recently applied to be discharged, saying the estate had been fully administered and there was no property available for distribution to creditors over and above that exempted by law. The Revenue was Mr Power's largest creditor. He originally faced three charges, contrary to the Companies Act, including knowingly or recklessly furnishing information to an electronic filing agent from 2014 to 2017. This followed an investigation by the Corporate Enforcement Authority relating to Dublin Distillers & Co Teoranta and the filing of B1 Annual Returns with the Companies Registration Office. Mr Power denies the charges, which had been due to be dealt with in the District Court. However, a connected matter led to a reappraisal of the case, and the DPP issued a new direction for a trial on indictment, elevating the prosecution to the Circuit Court, which can impose lengthier sentences. Mr Power was also faced with 84 new criminal charges, including forgery. He is alleged to have electronically amended a High Court order in December 2022 by adding information that was not granted by the court. Further charges related to breaches of tax law. His legal challenge to the prosecution was not unexpected. During a court hearing last November, he claimed the additional charges had been brought against him with 'malicious intent'. The DPP, Revenue Commissioners, Tax Appeals Commission, Corporate Enforcement Authority and the Garda Commissioner are among the respondents named in the action. Mr Power is representing himself in the proceedings and has yet to be given a date for a leave application for judicial review. The application is being made on notice to the respondents. In a statement of grounds, Mr Power claimed the respondents had conducted a 'hybrid investigation' that had violated his right to a fair trial and fair procedures. He further claimed the respondents had acted in excess of their jurisdiction and that he had been denied fairness and natural justice in administrative, civil and criminal proceedings arising from or connected to the prosecution.

Famous ice cream seller pictured serving customers before brutal fatal stabbing

A famous ice-cream seller who was stabbed to death in the street has been pictured for the first time. Detectives have named the man who died after a stabbing in Wembley, north-west London on Tuesday as 41-year-old Shazad Khan. Police say his family are being supported by specialist officers. A 26-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder in the early hours of Wednesday morning. He remains in custody alongside a 31-year-old woman, who was detained at the scene on suspicion of conspiracy to murder, reports The Mirror. Police said they responded to "reports of an altercation" in Monks Park, Wembley, at 6.10pm on Tuesday. Shazad was given emergency treatment by paramedics, but was pronounced dead at the scene. "This incident will rightly cause concern across the community, but intelligence at this stage leads us to believe there is no wider threat to the public. "Detectives are conducting a thorough and fast-paced investigation, and locals can expect to see an uptick in police presence in the area. "Anyone with any information – particularly dashcam or doorbell footage from the time of the incident – is urged to speak to us as a matter of urgency." Asim Mahmood Butt, 39, a local resident living in nearby Tokyngton Avenue, said he was childhood friends with Mr Khan. Speaking at the scene, he told reporters: "I got a call from one of my cousins. "This guy, we know him – he's a famous ice cream guy. He got stabbed yesterday. "I came here and his body was still here, and police had cordoned off the area. "We don't know the reason why, but all that we know is that a guy with a grey hoodie stabbed him eight times. That's what I've been told. The scene of the incident in London (Image: PA) "I know his brothers as well – they're all local. We all used to play cricket and football here in Monks Park. He started selling ice cream about a year ago." Mr Butt said the victim was married and had a young daughter. The victim's ice-cream van, which had been parked on the road at the time of the incident, was well known locally for having a large teddy bear, the witness added. A second witness, who did not want to be named, said the ice-cream van was towed away from the scene in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
