Woman attacked in Aurora park encouraging others to take self-defense classes
DENVER (KDVR) — A woman recently attacked in an Aurora park is now encouraging other women to take self-defense classes that she credits with saving her own life.
Westbound I-70 closed due to motorcycle crash
Aurora police are still searching for a man accused of attacking a woman on May 8 who was walking on the High Line Canal Trail at about 6:30 a.m. While she wants to remain anonymous for privacy, she has shared her story with FOX31 to bring awareness to other women.
'I felt somebody come grab me from the back. It felt like a hug from somebody that I know, and I thought, did my husband catch up to me?' said the victim. 'This is an attack, I need to fight. I remember thinking, I cannot fight standing up, he's a little bit bigger than me. So, I grabbed his head and we went down together.'
The victim said her mother took her to a self-defense class 30 years ago when she was in her teens. Training that came in use during her attack.
'I put my hands in his mouth, I put my fingers in his eyes, and I thought soft spots. I don't have to fight hard, I have to fight smart,' said the victim. 'My head wishes that I could have done so many more things but I am so freaking proud of me because I felt like the spirit of my mom, my ancestors, my abuelitas fighting with me to just say, you are not going to die today. We are here with you, we're going to protect you.'
The victim was eventually able to fend off the suspect and warn the surrounding women of the attack. Now, the victim is sharing her story with others in hopes that they learn how to protect themselves too, while hosting a free self-defense class on Saturday at the Colorado Krav Maga in north Denver.
'Too often, we live in fear, we're too afraid to walk on trails by ourselves. Honestly, it's very unfair, actually, makes me mad we have to do this, but women need to be able to feel empowered,' said Shannon Lukeman-Hiromasa, Colorado Krav Maga Co-Founder and Co-owner.
Instructors taught dozens of women on Saturday not only physical defense, but also awareness and avoidance tactics.
'As I left the hospital, my first call was to Shannon to say, Shannon, we need to do this for more women because it's not fair that not enough of us have the tools so our bodies essentially freeze because we don't fight back because we don't know how to,' said the victim.
Neighbors evacuated after truck crashes into home in Loveland
The suspect is still on the run. Aurora police said he may have injuries to his face incurred during the attack. The agency is still investigating and asks anyone with information to contact the Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867. Tipsters can remain anonymous and could be eligible for a reward of up to $2,000
Colorado Krav Maga has hosted free self-defense classes for many years. To find out more, visit their website.

New Yorkers are not satisfied with quality of life in NYC, survey finds
New Yorkers say they're not satisfied with quality of life in new survey New Yorkers say they're not satisfied with quality of life in new survey New Yorkers say they're not satisfied with quality of life in new survey New Yorkers are dissatisfied with the quality of life in New York City, according to new data from the Citizens Budget Commission. The recently surveyed residents are sending a clear message: The city isn't delivering enough. New data from the CBC reveals widespread dissatisfaction with quality of life, government services and public safety. Only 34% of New Yorkers rate citywide quality of life as "excellent" or "good," which is a sharp drop from 51% in 2017. Only 27% rate city services positively, plummeting from 44% in 2017. Housing, homelessness and mental health services rate among the worst, and only 42% of residents say they feel safe in their neighborhoods, despite NYPD data showing major crimes are down. NYC mayor race faces 1st debate tonight The survey comes with less than three weeks to the New York City mayoral primary elections, and the race is heating up. Nine democratic candidates will face off Wednesday night on the debate stage, trying to convince voters why they should be the city's next mayor. Recent polling shows Andrew Cuomo and Zohran Mamdani are leading the group. The list of contenders also includes Adrienne Adams, Michael Blake, Brad Lander, Zellnor Myrie, Jessica Ramos, Scott Stringer and Whitney Tilson. Political experts believe the debate will touch on topics like crime, immigration, education, congestion pricing and affordable housing. The debate is one of two that will be held before the June 24 primary elections. New York City Mayor Eric Adams will not be taking part, because he is running for reelection as an independent.

Cult Gaia Pre-Fall 2025 Collection
As a designer, it can be challenging to keep up with the relentless need for newness every season—so rather than reinventing the wheel for pre-fall, designer Jasmin Larian Hekmat looked to the things she does best—easy-breezy vacation staples that can also be worn year-round—to help drive her collection forward. 'This season, we really doubled down on our brand DNA and what makes Cult Gaia what it is,' she said. 'But we also introduced some new things.' This time around, her getaway-ready mini dresses were hand-crocheted in white, and done in butter-yellow plissés with knotted detailing. Her more formal creations, like a black Grecian gown with cutouts and brass detailing, retained the fun factor that Cult Gaia shoppers recognize. As usual, accessories were also a focal point—especially the bamboo-style brass detailing she added onto bags, cuffs, and heels, in a glamorous take on her love of nature-inspired elements. 'I wanted to create pieces that ignite conversation and joy,' Hekmat noted. Other offerings felt surprisingly sober for the brand, which typically exudes a more joyful spirit. Her take on a simple white tee at least had an interesting high-neckline—but one wonders if we need a Cult Gaia T-shirt in a saturated contemporary market. For Hekmat, that move towards simplicity was intentional. 'I want [our customer] to start coming to Cult Gaia not just for occasions, but for investing in pieces for everyday,' she said. A foray into leather—like the boxy moto jacket or paneled mini skirt—was also a part of that mandate. A brand like Cult Gaia does not need to be solely devoted to upbeat summer garments—but stark minimalism, as chic as it was, felt antithetical to the whole spirit.
