Business Times05-05-2025

[SINGAPORE] Ride-hail and delivery giant Grab announced on Monday (May 5) that Alejandro Osorio has been appointed as managing director (MD) of Grab Singapore.
Osorio currently leads the Grab Vietnam team.
In his place, Ma Tuan Trong, presently the company's country commercial head in Vietnam, will assume Osorio's role of MD for Grab's Vietnam office.
The appointments will take effect on July 1.
Osorio will be involved in the company's 'next phase of growth in Singapore', by scaling the new GrabCab taxi business to improve transport accessibility and convenience, integrating dining platform Chope's capabilities for a unified food experience, and leveraging GrabFin and GXS Bank to develop innovative financial products for Grab's users and partners.
'Singapore's openness to new ideas and commitment to public-private collaboration have given Grab invaluable opportunities to co-create industry-first solutions that truly make a difference in people's lives. That spirit of innovation is what draws me back to Singapore,' said Osorio in a media statement.

As for Trong, he has nearly seven years at Grab holding leadership positions in marketing, deliveries and commericals divisions within the Vietnam team.
He has contributed to establishing and scaling Grab's food delivery businesses from its inception to its current market position, while driving growth in the adoption of Grab's grocery and parcel delivery, omnicommerce, advertising and corporate solutions among users and partners.
Both Alejandro and Trong will report directly to Yee Wee Tang, who is himself transitioning to an expanded regional role as group managing director of operations.
'Osorio's expertise in leading diverse markets will introduce fresh strategies in Singapore, while Trong's capabilities in scaling businesses will deepen our reach within Vietnamese communities. Under their leadership, we are confident that we will continue to deliver exceptional value to our users and partners,' said Yee.
In his expanded capacity, Yee will oversee multiple countries ensuring strategic alignment across operations, as well as manage platform safety and driver and merchant operations regionally.

Vietnam lawmakers approve merging provinces, slashing nearly 80,000 jobs

Vietnamese lawmakers voted on June 12 to reduce the country's 63 provincial and city administrations to just 34, as the government looks to radically cut state expenditure. PHOTO: AFP HANOI - Vietnam's National Assembly approved plans to merge provinces and cities on June 12 , slashing nearly 80,000 state jobs, as part of major reforms to the communist country's administrative structure. Lawmakers voted to reduce the country's 63 provincial and city administrations to just 34, as the government looks to radically cut state expenditure. The move comes after the government cut the number of ministries and agencies from 30 to 22 in February, resulting in 23,000 job losses. Vietnam's top leader To Lam has said the drastic restructuring of the country's governance is needed if it is to achieve 'fast, stable and sustainable development'. In the June 12 vote, the assembly – a rubber-stamp body in a one-party system – approved the government's plans by 461 ballots to one, with three abstentions. Only 11 provinces and cities are left unchanged by the reform, with the rest all merged. Interior Minister Pham Thi Thanh Tra said it amounted to the 'biggest ever revolution since the country was founded' in 1945, state media reported on June 11 . '79,339 officials will have to be streamlined, quitting their jobs or submitting for early retirement following the merge,' Mr Tra told the National Assembly. One provincial official told AFP he was 'shocked and sad' as he will have to leave his position after more than 30 years of public service. 'I may receive some billion dong in compensation, but I am not happy,' the 58-year-old communist party member said, speaking on condition of anonymity. 'I don't know what to do now though I think I am still completely fit for work.' 'Native province gone' The streamlined administrative bodies will be expected to 'shift from passive management to active service to the people', said Mr Lam, the Communist Party general secretary and most powerful figure in the country. 'I think the merge is good for all and I fully support it,' said northern Thai Binh province resident Nguyen Thang Loi, 52, whose province is being merged. 'Though I feel really sad as the name of my native province, which has lasted generations, will now be gone. It's so weird to say I come from Hung Yen.' According to the government, all cities and provinces will announce their new leadership on June 30 and start full operation at the beginning of July. In the next few days, the National Assembly will vote on an amended national constitution, under which the country's three-level administrative structure of province, district and commune will be reduced to two. The middle district level will be eliminated and the commune level expanded. AFP Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.

Grab prices and increases convertible notes offering to US$1.5 billion

[SINGAPORE] Grab announced on Wednesday (Jun 11) that its five-year convertible note offering has been upsized to US$1.5 billion from US$1.25 billion. The initial conversion rate of the notes will be 152.6 Class A ordinary shares for every US$1,000 principal amount equivalent to an initial conversion price of around US$6.55 per Class A ordinary share. This is a premium of about 40 per cent above the closing price of US$4.68 on Tuesday. The proceeds will be used for general corporate purchases, a concurrent repurchase of shares and possible acquisitions. Grab and GoTo were recently rumoured to be in talks to merge before both issued disclosures saying otherwise on Tuesday. Grab plans to repurchase Class A ordinary shares worth about US$273.5 million from certain purchasers of the notes in an off-market transaction for a price of US$4.68 per share – the closing price on Tuesday. This purchase will be made under Grab's US$500 million share buyback programme. The bond will be listed on the Singapore Exchange and will be the largest equity-linked offering. The conversion rate is subject to adjustment. On or after Jun 21, 2028, Grab may redeem all or part of the notes for cash if the last reported Class A ordinary share price has been at least 130 per cent of the conversion price for at least 20 trading days during a 30 consecutive trading-day period. The notes may also be redeemed if less than 10 per cent of the aggregate principal amount of notes originally issued remains outstanding. Noteholders will have the option to require the company to repurchase for cash all or part of their notes at a price equal to the principal amount plus accrued and unpaid interest.

Grab shuts down GoTo merger talks, says ‘no discussions' or ‘definitive agreements' between parties

Photo: Depositphotos/brostock01 SINGAPORE: Grab has denied talks of a possible merger with Indonesian tech firm GoTo Gojek Tokopedia, saying no discussions are happening and no definitive agreements have been made. 'There have been media reports that we are engaged in discussions for a potential transaction with PT GoTo Gojek Tokopedia Tbk. The parties are not involved in any discussions at this time and Grab has not entered into any definitive agreements,' the Singapore-based company said in a stock exchange filing on June 9. According to Marketing-Interactive , Grab's statement came after a Reuters report last month citing sources saying Grab had appointed advisers and was aiming to acquire GoTo in the second quarter (Q2) of this year. That report suggested the deal could value GoTo at around US$7 billion (S$9 billion). A separate Bloomberg report published on Friday added that Indonesia's sovereign wealth fund, Danantara, was looking into the potential deal as well. Danantara also denied the claims, with its investment managing director, Stefanus Ade Hadiwidjaja, telling Tempo on Monday that no such talks had taken place. This is not the first time the idea of a Grab-GoTo merger has come up. In March, Grab was reportedly in talks to secure loans of up to US$2 billion (S$2.68 billion) for its possible takeover of Indonesia's GoTo Group. 'We will continue to maintain a high hurdle rate when deploying our capital, and will have a balanced approach to investing for organic, profitable growth, and be highly selective on inorganic opportunities, in line with our capital allocation framework. Indonesia continues to be an important country in serving our mission as we continue to outserve our Indonesian customers, driver- and merchant-partners,' Grab added in its stock exchange filing. /TISG Read also: Grab's AI Centre of Excellence to drive innovation and inclusivity in SEA and create 50 high-value roles for locals Featured image by Depositphotos (for illustration purposes only)
