Adarsh M Saji elected SFI All India president, Srijan Bhattacharya general secretary
Both leaders were previously serving as all India joint secretaries in the outgoing central committee and bring years of organisational experience and student leadership to their new roles.
Adarsh M Saji hails from Chathannur in Kollam. He is currently a final-year LLB student at Janhit Law College and serves as a member of the CPM Kollam District Committee. Prior to this elevation, he held the positions of SFI state vice-president and all India joint secretary.
Srijan Bhattacharya, the newly elected general secretary, is a native of Jadavpur in West Bengal. A postgraduate in history, he is also a member of the CPM West Bengal state Committee and previously served as the SFI West Bengal State Secretary. He contested in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections as the CPM candidate from the Jadavpur constituency.

MKU college increases fees by 10% annually, students hit
MADURAI: Students of Madurai Kamaraj University College in Tallakulam have appealed to the state government to regularise fees, saying the college has been increasing it by 10% every year based on the syndicate decision. Established in 1994, the college offers 16 UG and seven PG courses. More than 3,500 students, most of whom are from economically weaker sections, are studying in the institution. More than 200 teaching and non-teaching staff are working here, of which 21 are MKU teaching faculties, and the rest are guest lecturers who are paid consolidated salary of Rs 25,000. Speaking to TNIE, M Kavitha (name changed), a student, said she had joined the college because of the fees was less. However, the college is revising it by 10% every year, which is a burden on her parents. 'MKU authorities must look into this and revoke the syndicate order. None of the colleges in the city increases fees every year. The infrastructure here is very average, and does not match the fees they collect,' she said. The Students Federation of India (SFI) has been continuously fighting against the fee hike. 'So far we have given several representations to the collector, authorities of MKU and higher education department. We even staged protests, but they have gone in vain. What is the need to increase the fees every year? Salaries for teaching staff have remained the same for the last few years. Though it is a state-run university's college, it is collecting more than ten times the government approved fees,' said SFI district secretary C David Rajadurai.

Delhi police, on Wednesday, detained an ex-JU student, who is currently pursuing PhD in Spain, alleging 'involvement' in attack on TMC minister Bratya Basu six months ago. A former student of Jadavpur University, Hindol Mazumdar was detained following a lookout circular issued against him for his alleged involvement in the attack on the convoy of education minister Bratya Basu at the Jadavpur University campus in Kolkata in March this year. The Delhi Police detained him at 10.30am upon his arrival. Kolkata Police are preparing to seek a transit remand to bring the PhD scholar to Kolkata, as per multiple reports. Hindol's father, Chandan Majumdar said he was 'very suprised' as both parents were not aware 'that there was a lookout notice' against the former JU student, reported News 18. On March 1, Saturday, West Bengal Education minister Bratya Basu was allegedly injured after protests demanding to declare students union election dates in the state turned violent. Basu was surrounded by over around 100 students while returning from the Jadavpur University when he tried to speak to them after attending the annual general meeting of West Bengal College and University Professors Association(WBCUPA), reported PTI. The protests was held by the members of CPI(M) students wing SFI. During the protest, one SFI leader said that two left student activists were also injured after the cars in Basu's convoy ran over their ankles and they had to be admitted to hospital in serious condition. Hindol's father and a retired JU professor, Chandan Majumdar, said his son has been living in Spain since November 2023. He is a predoctoral researcher at Atrys, pursuing a doctorate in Biomedicine and Clinical Science at the University of Granada. Hindol Mazumdar was a student in pharmaceutical technology at JU. He had reportedly been served notices before a lookout notice was issued against him on March 16. He had sent an email that day, stating he had been living in Spain since November 2023, and therefore could not have been present at the university on the day of the attack. According to police, Hindol and two others living abroad financed those behind the attack, pointing to 'incriminating WhatsApp chats and social media posts' as evidence, reported Indian Express. Majumdar questioned the claims made on the basis of such evidence, stating, 'If visas are now being decided based on social media posts, then what can we say?'

KU postpones academic council meeting
T'puram: Kerala University postponed its academic council meeting on Thursday to possibly avoid a clash between supporters and critics of interim vice-chancellor (VC) Mohanan Kunnummal. The meeting was set for 10am and all members received an email about the postponement by 9:30am. SFI workers gathered at the university's headquarters to protest against Kunnummal's order to observe Aug 14 as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day. Around 100 academic council members were also present at the university. Kunnummal didn't come to the university campus, but suspended registrar K S Anil Kumar was seen in his office. The academic council is supposed to meet once every four months. On Wednesday, the deans' council met and shared its recommendations.
