Anwar: No Cabinet reshuffle following PKR polls

The Star22-04-2025

PUTRAJAYA: No Cabinet reshuffle is on the cards, despite ongoing PKR division elections which saw several party leaders being defeated.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said this when asked on the possibility of a Cabinet reshuffle following the defeat of several prominent PKR figures.
'No. This is a party election. It is being conducted properly. Any issues or concerns can be raised during the special meeting on Wednesday (tomorrow),' he told reporters at the Higher Education Ministry's Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration here yesterday.
He stressed that the government continues to operate as usual and dismissed speculation linking the party's internal affairs to a possible Cabinet shake-up.
'This is strictly a party matter. There is no question of it involving the state or federal government. Everything is proceeding as usual.
'The way I see it, each individual (was evaluated) based on their performance, not political manoeuvring,' he said.
In the recent PKR division elections, several prominent figures experienced shock defeats.
Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, also a PKR vice-president and Setiawangsa MP, lost to actor-director Datuk Afdlin Shauki for the Setiawangsa division chief post.

Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Adam Adli Abd Halim also failed in his bid for the deputy chief post of the Hang Tuah Jaya division, losing to Zamzizul Nordin.
Other notable losses included Deputy National Unity Minister K. Saraswathy, who was defeated in Bukit Bintang, and Batu MP P. Prabakaran, who lost to lawyer Asheeq Ali Sethi Alivi in the Batu division.
At the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry's Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration, Anwar playfully responded to the media quoting lyrics from the late Tan Sri P. Ramlee's song Tunggu Sekejap when asked about the major upsets in the PKR division elections, Bernama reported.
When approached by reporters as he was leaving the function, the PKR president casually quoted the lyrics: 'Tunggu sekejap, jangan dikenang orang jauh ... tunggu sekejap,' without offering any further comment on the matter.
His light-hearted demeanour drew laughter from reporters.

Nurul Izzah admits hajj trip with hubby is self-funded after ‘backstabbing' by own PKR member

NEWLY-ELECTED PKR deputy president Nurul Izzah Anwar has cleared the air that her hajj trip to Makkah with her husband was 'entirely self-funded' after an allegedly supporter of the pro-Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli's faction accused her of splashing 'over RM200,000 per person' for her hajj expenses. This came about after numerous slanderous social media posts and messages were hurled at the former Permatang Pauh MP who had recently engaged in a bitter contest for the deputy president post in the PKR top central leadership poll amid cries of nepotism and favouritism. Aside from perhaps the privileged Mujamalah visa – an invitational or special visa issued by the Saudi Arabian government outside of the official quota – the eldest daughter of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim reasoned that logistical arrangements were managed by licensed travel agency, Mimm Travel. 'We travelled on commercial flights and used our own savings (to pay for accommodation and transportation),' Nurul Izzah penned on her Facebook page yesterday (June 8) evening. 'No private jet as falsely claimed. The journey was undertaken just like millions of other Hajj pilgrims.' Added the 44-year-old Nurul Izzah who married her ex-colleague Yin Shao Loong (now a Khazanah Research Institute senior research associate) on Aug 5, 2022 after her marriage with first husband Raja Ahmad Shahrir ended in divorce on Jan 16, 2015: 'While we may differ in opinions and compete in the political arena of this world, let us not allow worship to be used as material for slander and defamation. 'Let us pray for one another; may Allah SWT grant sustenance and opportunities to more Muslims to become His guests – in a state that is made easy with accepted deeds and kept far from human slander.: Earlier, pro-HIRUK (Rafizi's PKR poll campaign tagline) Malaysian Affairs 🇲🇾007 (@msianaffairs) had demanded to know what Nurul Izzah's income source was after having claimed that the cost of her hajj expenses with her husband could have exceeded RM400,000. Siapa yang bayar kos haji Nurul Izzah yang berharga lebih RM200,000 seorang? Apakah sumber pendapatan beliau? Kos 2 orang izzah dan suami sudah melangkaui RM400k Semua tahu dia tinggal di Dar Al Tawhid Intercontinental, the most luxurious hotel in Mekah@n_izzah @anwaribrahim — Malaysian Affairs 🇲🇾007 (@msianaffairs) June 7, 2025 'Everyone knows she stayed at Dar Al Tawhid Intercontinental, the most luxurious hotel in Mecca,' claimed the self-proclaimed anti-nepotism advocate. Despite being criticised for poking his nose on Nurul Izzah's private matters at a time when the couple needed the peace of mind to perform their pilgrimage solemnly and wholesomely, Malaysian Affairs 🇲🇾007 whose social media post has garnered 1M views at the time of writing seemed unremorseful in wanting to pin down the PKR president's daughter despite her clarification. 'Things can be done for damage control. You can change hotels in the middle of the trip. You don't need a miracle to do that 🤣,' added the keyboard warrior. – June 9, 2025

Govt collecting phone data to boost network coverage

PETALING JAYA: The government is harnessing mobile phone data from network operators to help the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) strengthen mobile network infrastructure and close connectivity gaps, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said yesterday. The data will be used to drive evidence-based policies, offering granular insights into service quality and user density across districts. 'It's a Cabinet-backed move, and the Communications Ministry is fully on board. 'The data contains no personal details, just trends. It helps us understand where services are lagging and where upgrades are needed,' Fahmi said at a press conference yesterday. Fahmi said the initiative will sharpen decision-making and support long-term digital development. He was addressing public concerns over potential privacy risks following reports of the government's move. Fahmi reiterated that the data shared by telecos with government agencies will not contain any personally identifiable information, contrary to public fears. 'This is a joint decision by telcos and MCMC, involving agencies such as DOSM, and developed through a series of workshops held since 2023. 'Discussions have been ongoing for some time without issues. I've been informed that telcos will not share any data containing users' personal details. Only anonymised data will be provided.' Fahmi said this during the Korban Perdana Perpaduan Umno Lembah Pantai 2025 event, where 15 cattle were slaughtered at Kampung Pasir. The government initiative has sparked uproar among the public and many voiced their dissatisfaction and concerns over privacy on social media platforms. 'Most of my info on govt webs and apps got leaked. How are we to trust them with more of our data?' wrote user @aiden_crayden. Another user, @dk_derick72 described it as a 'slippery slope'. He said data privacy and protection laws must take precedence over unnecessary or unfounded government requests. On Friday, MCMC responded to the concerns. It clarifed that the data collected would be used strictly for generating official statistics to support evidence-based policymaking in two key areas, information and communications technology (ICT) and tourism. 'The data requested is anonymised and contains no personally identifiable information. 'The operators may either process the data within their own secure environment and submit only the anonymised, aggregated output to MCMC, or if lacking in-house capabilities, submit the anonymised data directly to MCMC for processing. 'In both scenarios, no individual subscriber can be identified through the data collected,' MCMC said in a statement. Meanwhile, Fahmi, who is also Lembah Pantai MP and a PKR central committee member, expressed hope that other constituencies would emulate the collaboration between PKR and Umno in Lembah Pantai to foster mutual understanding and address issues facing the Madani government. 'Moving forward, parties within the unity government, particularly in Lembah Pantai, will aim to organise joint activities to build rapport, strengthen ties and address shared concerns. 'It is a catalyst for our colleagues in other constituencies to recognise the strength of our unity government in tackling challenges,' he added.

No legal action for traders as LPG cylinder rules await October amendment to 2021 Control of Supplies Regulations, says Armizan

KUALA LUMPUR, June 9 — Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali has clarified that the the use of subsidised liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders involves the Control of Supplies Regulations (Amendment) 2021 and not the Control of Supplies (Amendment) Act 2022 (Act A1652). He pointed out that he was referring to the 2021 amendment, which was enacted and gazetted in 2021 and came into effect on Oct 15, 2021 during a press conference on Thursday, and expressed hope that there would be no public confusion over the issue. 'In the press conference on June 5, I clearly mentioned the Control of Supplies Regulations (Amendment) 2021. In the same conference, a media statement was also distributed... I urge (all parties) not to confuse the public with references to laws that I did not mention,' he posted on Facebook today to refute claims by certain parties that all eateries would be required to use the commercial 14-kilogramme (kg) purple LPG cylinders, priced at RM70 each, instead of the green cylinders for domestic use priced at RM26. At Thursday's press conferences, Armizan announced that micro and small traders in the food and beverage sector were allowed to continue using subsidised LPG cylinders without needing a special permit until the new amendment to the 2021 amendment is finalised this October. No legal action will be taken against traders during the transition period, he added. — Bernama
