IN State Rep. files bill to add more lanes to I-70
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — State Rep. Tonya Pfaff (D-Terre Haute) has filed a bill that aims to shorten the timeline for infrastructure improvements, alleviate road congestion and enhance safety on I-70.
House Bill 1087 will try to improve traffic flow on I-70 by adding additional lanes.
The bill 'requires the Indiana Department of Transportation to take action necessary to construct one or more additional lanes of traffic across Indiana for: (1) eastbound; and (2) westbound,' according to the bill's synopsis.
'Terre Haute is literally the crossroads of America, and we are proud to serve as a vital link in our local, state, and national economy,' Pfaff said in a press release. 'While I am proud to represent this key thoroughfare, we must take action to make it safer and more efficient for everyone who relies on it. House Bill 1087 has the potential to bring critical investments to our community to achieve both of these goals.'
I-70 backed up 10 miles due to 'several accidents'
Pfaff also collaborated with local stakeholders on this legislation, including the Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce.
'Tragic wrecks and hours of delays for travelers have plagued the stretch of I-70 near Terre Haute between the state line and Exit 41 for years,' said Kristin Craig, President and CEO of the Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce. 'The results have been loss of life, including families and children, and overall loss of confidence in this critical piece of infrastructure.'
According to the proposed bill's fiscal note, adding additional lanes to the east and westbound lanes would cost an estimated $2.06 B, based on the cost of resources in 2024. However, the fiscal note said, $1.65 B would be drawn from federal funds.
'We want West Central Indiana to be a place where businesses thrive and families can live safely and comfortably,' Pfaff added. 'Prioritizing infrastructure improvements like the expansion of I-70 is essential to keeping our area attractive and economically competitive. I'm proud to champion this legislation at the Statehouse as a member of the House Committee tasked with writing our state's budget.'

Trump parade to take place Saturday alongside nationwide and local protests
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— U.S. President Donald Trump plans to have a parade to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the military, and a nationwide protest of the event has been planned for the same day across the United States. The parade on June 14 is said to be bringing more than 150 armored vehicles and more than 6,000 soldiers to Washington, D.C., where soldiers will be housed in nearby federal buildings. The event is expected to have 200,000 in attendance and will have the U.S. Secret Service, FBI, and other federal security working special security for the event. The FAA is also suspending flight operations on June 14. The parade will be an hour long and take place at 6:30 p.m. on Constitution Avenue Northwest between 15th and 23rd Street in the Capitol. In a statement from Army Spokesperson Steve Warren, the celebration will include a fireworks display and a daylong festival at the National Mall. Military officials said that the parade could cost taxpayers $45 million. Activist groups have planned nationwide peaceful protests for the same day to protest the celebration, stating the cost to taxpayers as one reason, as well as it coinciding with the president's 79th birthday, and ongoing claims of lack of funding for programs like SNAP and Medicaid while using funds for the parade. 'Instead of allowing this birthday parade to be the center of gravity, we will make action everywhere else the story of America that day: people coming together in communities across the country to reject strongman politics and corruption,' the No Kings Coalition's website reads. Local cities of Terre Haute and Vincennes are two of what is claimed to be at least 35 cities across the Hoosier state to be participating in these peaceful protests. Vincennes will be hosting its event from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Patrick Henry Square, where they are inviting members of Knox County to line up along Second Street to hold signs. Attendees are encouraged to use street parking or utilize the city lots on Vigo Street between 4th and 5th Street. There will also be a sign-making event at the Knox County Democratic Party Headquarters prior to the event, and speakers are set to begin at 2:45 p.m. Terre Haute will be hosting its protest at the Vigo County Courthouse from 10 a.m. to noon, with speakers beginning at 11 a.m., featuring residents, community leaders, and local organizations. According to an article from Variety some Republicans appear to oppose the idea of the parade as well, comparing it to the sort of maneuver one sees in dictatorships abroad. Rand Paul, the Kentucky Republican, told reporters Tuesday that he has 'never been a big fan of goose-stepping soldiers in big tanks and missiles rolling down the street.' State Treasurer announces partnership between Hoosier Care and INvestABLE

Those Hoosiers covered by the program who also have an INvestABLE Indiana account will have their Indiana Value Added Benefit raised to $75, effective immediately. This covers any Hoosier Care Connect members who have made their INvestABLE account within the last year. 'I'm excited to see Anthem stepping up to support Hoosiers with disabilities through INvestABLE Indiana,' said Treasurer Daniel Elliott. 'This partnership is about real people getting real tools to build a better future. ABLE accounts give folks the chance to save, plan, and live more independently—and that's something worth celebrating.' INvestABLE Indiana is a way for Hoosiers with disabilities to save and invest money without losing benefits like SSI and Medicaid. The organization offers eight savings and investment options, as well as a checking account option with a debit card. You can save up to $19,000 yearly in an account with a maximum balance of $450,000. Hoosiers with SSI can save up to $100,000 a year. Money can be withdrawn from the account for qualified expenses, or you can choose to grow it with tax-free earnings. Vigo Co. Commissioner raises concerns with solar farm project
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Tuesday, the Vigo County Commissioners held their monthly meeting, and one of the main talking points was the progress of Derivia Energy's Hoosier Solar Farm Project. The solar farm project will be a 175-megawatt solar farm that is strong enough to power nearly 135,00 homes between Vigo and Sullivan Counties. Vigo County Commissioner Mike Morris brought up some concerns with the project because Derivia has received a property tax abatement for the project. Something Morris said isn't worth it for the county with how much they have invested. Vigo County Council approves mandate of court employee salary raises 'They said we are going to get $2 million over the lifetime of it. The lifetime is 35 years, that means we get $57,000 a year, possibly. So, I think for that kind of investment, they got a $250 million investment, I think that the county deserves a little more income of that revenue-generating process,' said Morris. Derivia Energy representatives said the project should start construction by the end of 2025 or early 2026, and expect the full project to be completed by late 2027.
