Corning-Painted Post schools propose $146.8M budget over tax cap. What's driving costs?

Yahoo21-05-2025

Residents in the Corning-Painted Post Area School District will vote May 20 on a proposed 2025-26 budget of just over $146.8 million that includes a 6.33% increase to the spending plan.
Taxes will rise from $20.32 to $21.23, a 91-cent increase per $1,000 of assessed value from last year's spending plan, according to Michelle Caulfield, C-PP Superintendent of Schools.
Caulfield said factors affecting the increase include the rising cost of health insurance, utilities, contractual salaries, school district department budgets, BOCES services and transportation.
'Strong schools create strong communities,' Caulfield said. 'Our proposed budget focuses on educational opportunities, service learning, community engagement and multiple pathways to graduation. Our teachers, staff and administrators have dedicated their careers to creating these experiences and they are second to none. We are proud of the programs we provide students and are grateful for the community's support.'
Caulfield said the budget proposal preserves everything, including safety, instructional programming, athletics, and before and after school extracurricular activities.
'It preserves programs like the High School Learning Center and the International Baccalaureate Program, our modified athletics program and our elementary and performance bands,' Caulfield said. 'These are all key components of our students' education and experiences.'
Bill Cameron, C-PP spokesperson, said the proposed budget exceeds the tax cap and requires a 60 percent supermajority vote to pass.
The 2024 spending plan also required a supermajority vote for the first time in over 15 years. Voters rejected the initial plan, which included a $139.1 million budget and a 4.97% tax levy hike. Changes were then made to the budget, which later passed with a revised $138 million spending plan featuring a 2.97% percent tax levy hike.

A public hearing for the 2025-26 spending plan will be held at 6:30 p.m. on May 13 at the C-PP High School Cafeteria.
Voting polls will be open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 20 at the C-PP High School at 201 Cantigney St. in Corning, the C-PP Administration Building at 165 Charles St. in Painted Post, Corning Town Hall at 20 S. Maple St. in South Corning, and Erwin Valley School at 16 Beartown Road in Painted Post.

DOD allocates $25M for new fire station at YARS

VIENNA, Ohio (WKBN) – A Department of Defense funding plan shows that $25 million is being set aside for a new fire station at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station in Vienna Township. The plan shows that money is being appropriated for FY 2025. It's part of the Continuing Appropriations and Extensions Act 2025, which was signed by President Donald Trump on March 15. Congressman Dave Joyce, 14th District, who is also a member of the House Appropriations Defense Subcommittee, joined other Valley lawmakers in a letter to Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth reiterating the importance of the funding for the fire station, specifically stating its importance as the facility transitions to the new C-130J. Congressman Michael Rulli, 6th District, said that the investment is significant and shows the importance of the air station. 'It ensures that Northeast Ohio remains not just relevant, but indispensable to our national security,' Rulli said. Last year, an $11 million project got started for a new front gate and visitor center at the air station. That project is being overseen by the Army Corps of Engineers. The air station began receiving the new C-130J in July 2024, with all aircraft to be delivered by the end of 2025. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. S&G Stores shuffles leadership team

This story was originally published on C-Store Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily C-Store Dive newsletter. Neal Frandsen, vice president of marketing for midwest convenience retailer S&G Stores, is expected to retire next summer, Fransden said in a statement to C-Store Dive. His successor is industry veteran Keith Broviak, who will spend the next several months onboarding. Broviak will officially join S&G — which operates 68 convenience stores across Ohio and Michigan — on June 30, Fransden said. Frandsen — who has also held leadership roles with c-store retailers including Certified Oil, GPM Investments and Turkey Hill Minit Markets over a four-decade career — said he will shift to 'handle special projects' once Broviak is comfortable enough to fully take over the position. This shift will likely occur in January, Frandsen said. Once established as the new VP, Broviak will assume direct leadership of S&G's marketing department. He will oversee all categories except for foodservice, frozen foods, ice cream, and cigarettes and other tobacco products, Frandsen said. Beyond his marketing duties, Broviak will oversee procurement for S&G's store supplies and will coordinate its network of nonprofit sponsorships and programs. Broviak has worked in the convenience retailing industry for nearly three decades. This includes serving as director of marketing for Ricker Oil for 20 years before the retailer sold its assets to Giant Eagle in 2018, as well as chief marketing officer for Coen Oil between 2019 and 2024, according to his LinkedIn bio. Broviak had been working with c-store consultancy CSD Solutions since last October. S&G also named Aaron Hirt as director of foodservice, effective April 22, Frandsen said. Hirt is responsible for revamping S&G's proprietary On The Go Bistro program as well as new fried chicken, pizza and sandwich offerings in some of the retailer's incoming remodeled stores. Hirt is also responsible for S&G's foodservice profitability and sales, as well as closely working with the operations team on proper foodservice execution and safety, product selection and promotions. He joined S&G after nearly three years with food and beverage company AVI Foodsystems, according to his LinkedIn bio.
