In a contest that featured a complete-game shutout from David Peterson, two home runs from Brandon Nimmo and a fifth home run in his past 11 games from Juan Soto, Pete Alonso might have been the quietest major contributor.
The Mets slugger just keeps hitting — and continues playing a better-than-the-numbers defensive first base — as a hot start has become a hot two-plus months of the season.

Alonso drilled an RBI double in the first inning to give the Mets the only run they would need and did his best in helping Peterson take down nine scoreless innings for the first time in his career in Wednesday's 5-0 victory over the Nationals at Citi Field.
By jumping on a two-out curveball from Jake Irvin and one-hopping the center field wall to drive in Nimmo, Alonso extended his on-base streak to 19 games and hitting streak to eight games.
Over those eight games, he has gone 14-for-44 with eight extra-base hits, nine runs scored, 17 RBIs and a 1.470 OPS.

Overlooked defensively, Alonso made several clutch stops to help Peterson through a game in which any extra pitch would have been costly. In the second inning, Alonso made a nice scoop on a ball that third baseman Ronny Mauricio threw in the dirt.
With two runners on in the seventh, Alonso knocked down a ground ball from Alex Call, picked it up and won the foot race to the bag.
'The defense making some big plays, Pete knocking that ball down,' Peterson said. 'I get the attention for it, but this was a huge team win.'

The Mets are open-minded — and perhaps unsure — about what they have in Paul Blackburn.
The righty started one game after coming off the injured list, throwing five scoreless innings at Dodger Stadium on June 2, and then was bumped from a starting group that had been excellent while he was rehabbing his knee injury.

Blackburn was shuffled to the bullpen and able to remain stretched out by eating up four innings on 71 pitches Sunday, when he earned the rare blowout save by mopping up a game that had been decided early.
Asked if Blackburn would remain in that piggyback role, Carlos Mendoza said, 'not necessarily.'
'It happened that day [in Colorado] — we were staying away from a lot of guys [in the bullpen] that day,' Mendoza said. 'But if we need to use him for an inning or two in high leverage, we would do it.
'We feel good with him fully built up, and we can get 75 to 80 pitches there. But if we need to shoot him there for a couple of innings, we will, too.'

Blackburn made just his fifth career relief appearance, while he has started 83 games. He has taken the reduced role willingly.
The Mets traded for the 31-year-old at last year's trade deadline, but his time with the club has been marked by a series of injuries.

Mark Vientos again took swings in the batting cage and jogged in the outfield.
The third baseman, who has been out since June 2 with a right hamstring strain, does not look far from a rehab assignment.
Several around the Mets, including some coaches, wore shirts that read, 'Vote Mets' as an All-Star push.

DCE rattled in post-game drama as axed QLD player sends statement to Billy Slater
Daly Cherry Evans' week has gone from bad to worse after the axed Queensland captain flopped in Manly's hiding by the Gold Coast Titans on Friday night. Billy Slater's decision to drop DCE from his Origin Game 2 side failed to illicit the sort of response the Sea Eagles would have hoped for as Titans coach Des Hasler got one over his old club to mastermind a 28-8 win. And a wild post-match incident with a fan topped it off for Cherry-Evans. On the other hand, Beau Fermor sent a statement to Slater that his axing from the Queensland side was the wrong call after starring in Gold Coast's big win. The Titans are still bottom of the ladder, while the loss sees Manly lose further ground on the top eight ahead of next week's bye. The Sea Eagles suffered a double blow, with powerhouse forward Haumole Olakau'atu also dislocating a shoulder after dropping the ball over the tryline, with the injury likely to sideline him for a number of weeks. But it was another insipid defeat away to a lowly ranked opponent that should leave Manly coach Anthony Seibold concerned. Gold Coast had 11 players unavailable, with two in Origin camps and nine out with injury. And for the first time since 2015, Manly had no players on Origin duty and were essentially at full strength, barring the absence of Lehi Hopoate (concussion). Many expected a big game from DCE after his Maroons axing but apart from one classy try assist in the first half, the Manly skipper and his side were underwhelming. Cherry-Evans had two wayward kicks that gave the Titans seven-tackle sets and failed to spark his side's spluttering attack, with fullback Tom Trbojevic also struggling in his return from injury. DCE was also left rattled in wild post-match scenes when a supporter ran onto the field and grabbed him, before being tackled to the ground by two security officials. But the Manly skipper insisted the disappointment of being dropped as Maroons skipper didn't affect his performance. "The start of the week was tough," Cherry-Evans said. "On Sunday, I got the news and on Monday I had to go to training and face the boys "After that it honestly started to feel normal. The initial news was tough but I moved on and thought we were going to come here and play some good footy. "Based on our preparation, it looked like all the signs were there. Unfortunately, the most important part of the week is showing up on game day and we didn't do that." DCE also addressed speculation the Roosters could get cold feet and pull the pin on an expected move there next season, due to his patchy form. "I sort of don't understand that stuff - I stay out of it," DCE added. "All I can do is control my footy at Manly and speculation will be speculation. But obviously we've just lost a couple in a row so it would be silly for me to be worrying about stuff like that." WATCH: Daly Cherry-Evans was grabbed by a fan in wild scenes after the loss to the Titans #NRL #Titans #Manly — NRLCentral (@nrlcentrall) June 13, 2025 While DCE struggled on Friday night, fellow Maroons discard Fermor showed that Slater might have made the wrong call. Fermor didn't have much chance to make an impact in limited minutes off the bench for the Maroons in the Origin decider and lost his spot to Kurt Capewell for Game 2. RELATED: Calls for immediate change amid apparent NSW rule breach Nathan Cleary comes clean amid rumour around Mary Fowler But Fermor - who has been one of the form second-rowers in the NRL this season - had an outstanding game for the Titans and was instrumental to their 20-point home victory. Fermor played a key role in a number of Gold Coast four-pointers and made a last-ditch, try-saving tackle on Olakau'atu, that ultimately resulted in injury for the Manly star. Gold Coast's Alofiana Khan-Pereira also became the fastest man to score 50 tries in the NRL era, bagging a double in his 52nd NRL game. What a week for Beau Fermor! After being relieved of his duties for @QLDmaroons he had a stormer for @GCTitans tonight in a surprise 28-8 win over @SeaEagles A busted forehead couldn't stop him! He believes the Titans can turn the season around! — Zane Bojack (@zanofc) June 13, 2025 Billy really played Fermor 15 mins then drops him to have Cotter start on an edge😂! Glad we have you back though Beau! That QLD 12 Jersey is yours once QLD has a coaching staff change👍#NRLTitansManly — (@skunjip_29) June 13, 2025 How the hell is Fermor not starting on the left edge for QLD will do me! #nrltitansmanly — Michael Andrews (@Michael26123906) June 13, 2025 with AAP

Fans React to Anthony Edwards Getting Adidas Cleats Before Noah Lyles
Fans React to Anthony Edwards Getting Adidas Cleats Before Noah Lyles originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Anthony Edwards continues to rise in popularity as one of the NBA's main attractions, thanks to his on-court performances. He and the Minnesota Timberwolves eliminated the Lakers and Warriors from the playoffs, with superstars LeBron James, Luka Doncic, Steph Curry, and Jimmy Butler forced to watch the other rounds from afar. Advertisement Edwards and his squad couldn't eliminate the Oklahoma City Thunder, but it seems that Minnesota will be a serious contender thanks to Ant-Man and his supporting cast members. And they could receive an upgrade by adding an impressive rookie via the NBA Draft or trading for Kevin Durant during the offseason. He's got a signature basketball shoe with Adidas with the Anthony Edwards 1 Low, and it's set to expand into another sport. An interesting development recently arrived with Ant's sneaker, as news hit that he and the shoe brand are dropping AE 1 football cleats next year. Advertisement The Nice Kicks X account dropped an early look at the upcoming shoe for the gridiron, and for those wondering, Edwards excelled at youth football in Georgia before switching his focus to hoops. Fan reactions to the AE 1 cleats have seemed mostly positive without knowing how well these shoes will work for football. That said, many individuals couldn't help but mention a fellow USA Olympic athlete. "Noah is not going to like this," a popular comment on the X post said. "Noah Lyles fuming somewhere rn," another X commenter wrote. "Now do it for track and field. I wanna see something real quick," one commenter said. Advertisement "How a NBA player got the best football cleats lol," someone asked in an X comment. Both Edwards and Lyles achieved gold at the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics. Ant's came from Team USA basketball, while Lyles won his in the men's 100 metres event. He's touted himself as a "six-time world champion." Earlier this month, former NFL star Cam Newton asked Lyles about the perceived beef or quarrel between him and Edwards. Last year, a video from The Guardian features Lyles calling out Team USA basketball as "world champions of what?" While talking with Newton on his podcast, the track and field star explained his contract situation with Adidas and how he previously expressed interest to them in having a signature shoe like Edwards does. Lyles told Newton that he requires spikes for running and Adidas makes 'some of the best in the world" so he likely wouldn't go with another brand despite his frustration with them. However, the popular shoe company hasn't released a line of signature track and field cleats for him. Advertisement Meanwhile, Ant is adding football cleats in 2026 as he continues to expand his AE 1 offerings with Adidas.
