Islanders strike deal with forward Emil Heineman after Noah Dobson trade

New York Post02-07-2025
Mathieu Darche continued to check boxes off his to-do list Wednesday.
The Islanders announced a two-year deal with Emil Heineman after trading for the restricted free agent's rights in the deal that sent Noah Dobson to Montreal.
The deal came in at $1.1 million annually, per a source.

Heineman, who will likely slot into the fourth line, had 10 points and eight assists with the Habs last season while playing a physical and competitive style of hockey that appealed to Darche.
The Swede played 62 games last year, missing time after getting hit by a car in Salt Lake City.

'We really wanted him to be in the trade, so we pushed to the end to be in the trade,' Darche said last week. 'He's a player the league discovered this year. He had a great start to the year.
'… We see potential. He's a strong kid that skates great, he's got a rocket of a shot. If you look at his goals, it's a high-velocity shot that can score. We see a lot of potential in this player. The cap hit right now works, it helps us maybe create other opportunities somewhere else cause he's an NHL player. He's an established NHL player now. We feel he can only improve in the coming years.'

The Islanders still have to get deals done for restricted free agents Max Tsyplakov and Marc Gatcomb. They're also waiting on a decision from Russian free agent Max Shabanov.

Controversial Olympic skier Eileen Gu in ‘very terrible' accident while training

American freestyle skiing star Eileen Gu said she was injured in a 'very terrible accident' Friday while training in New Zealand, according to the South China Morning Post. Gu — who resumed training last month after being injured at the Winter X Games in January — explained in a post on Weibo, a Chinese social media platform, that she was flown to Christchurch Saturday for medical imaging. She did not explain the extent of her injury. According to South China Morning Post, eyewitnesses said Gu appeared to be seriously injured and was taken to the hospital on a stretcher. 4 Eileen Gu poses during the awarding ceremony of freestyle skiing women's freeski halfpipe at Zhangjiakou Medals Plaza of the Winter Olympics in Zhangjiakou, north China's Hebei Province, February 18, 2022. Xinhua News Agency via Getty Images 'Unfortunately, a very terrible accident occurred yesterday due to human error,' Gu, 21, wrote. 'I hope I can return to the snow soon, but I'm still waiting for confirmation from the expert team.' The two-time Olympic champion explained that it is 'dangerous to be interrupted' and cautioned not to film her during her training sessions. 'I have to concentrate fully during training, especially when I am preparing to start, as it's very dangerous to be interrupted,' Gu said. 'I also have to focus on picturing and imagining the moves while on the cable car. 'In order to save time, I don't have lunch breaks and try to use the bathroom as little as possible. So please don't record or take photos while I'm training.' 4 Eileen Gu competes during the Women's Freeski Halfpipe Final at the 2024/25 FIS Snowboard & Freeski Halfpipe World Cup at Secret Garden on December 7, 2024 in Zhangjiakou, Hebei Province of China. She holds the record for the most freestyle skiing World Cup titles (15) in history. Gu is also a model with IMG, having secured high-fashion campaigns with Louis Vuitton and more luxury brands. She made her Sports Illustrated Swimsuit debut in the 2025 issue, released in May. She attended Stanford after the 2022 Winter Olympics.

Rory McIlroy Hints at More Changes to FedEx Cup Tour Championship Format

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Tour Championship will tee off Thursday, with 30 of the best players in the world vying for the season-long title where Rory McIlroy seeks his fourth FedEx Cup title at East Lake. Scottie Scheffler is the favorite, fresh off his win at the BMW Championship. McIlroy is the second favorite, followed by Tommy Fleetwood, Russell Henley and Ludvig Aberg. The 2025 Tour Championship is taking on a new format. All players will start level, unlike recent years. Previously, the points leader would begin the tournament at 10-under, second place at 8-under, with each place after that starting one stroke further back until you reach even par. Fans and golfers alike voiced their displeasure with that system. But apparently, McIlroy was not among them. "I'm maybe part of the minority. I didn't hate the starting strokes," McIlroy told reporters Tuesday. "I thought that the player that played the best during the course of the season should have had an advantage coming in here. But the majority of people just didn't like the starting strokes. "I was on the PAC when we were trying to go through that, and really it was just a way to try to simplify the advantage that the top players were going to get over the course of the week instead of Steve Sands doing calculations on a white board," the Northern Irishman joked. (Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images) More Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images With all players now starting at even par, anyone can win. McIlroy clearly feels that format is not the fairest way to determine a season champion. But as a member of that PAC (Player Advisory Council), another format was brought to the forefront. "Look, there was a lot of other stuff on the table. Match play was on the table, and that got canned for this year. That might be brought back up in the conversation for next year or the year after," said McIlroy. It remains to be seen how long the new, current system will be used. But if someone who barely finished inside the top 30 after the BMW wins the FedEx Cup, leaving stars like Scheffler and McIlroy empty-handed, another change is not hard predict. Determining a season-long champion since the inception of the FedEx Cup has long been up for debate. But McIlroy is just going to roll with whatever comes. "I don't know if it's the best format, but it's the one that we have for this week." More Golf: PGA Tour 2026 Schedule Revealed With One Major Shake-Up

Liverpool news as Joelinton can't hide his true feelings over Alexander Isak's transfer plea

Newcastle's Joelinton has shown his support for a fan's social media post regarding the Alexander Isak situation. The Magpies and the 25-year-old Swede are currently at an impasse over his future, with Isak refusing to play for the club again due to interest from Liverpool. However, Newcastle is adamant that he is not on the market. On Tuesday, Isak took to social media to voice his frustration about what he termed as "broken promises" during his tenure at St. James' Park. A few hours later, the club issued a statement reiterating its commitment to retaining the player. "We are disappointed to have been alerted to a social media post by Alexander Isak this evening," the statement read. "We want to keep our best players, but we also understand players have their own wishes and we listen to their views. "As explained to Alex and his representatives, we must always take into consideration the best interests of Newcastle United, the team and our supporters in all decisions and we have been clear that the conditions of a sale this summer have not transpired. "We do not foresee those conditions being met. "This is a proud football club with proud traditions and we strive to retain our family feel. "Alex remains part of our family and will be welcomed back when he is ready to rejoin his teammates." In the midst of the rumors, Newcastle's fan group 'Wor Flags' responded on Instagram to Isak's statement. The post's caption appears to be directed at Isak, stating: "Idolised and adored. "No promises broken by the fans that make this club. We deserve better than the destructive path you've chosen. "Newcastle United will never be defeated." Newcastle's midfielder Joelinton was among those who showed their support for the post by liking it, with fans expressing their dissatisfaction toward the striker, while others praised the club for its positive handling of the situation so far.
