Cheers and then boos for evil penguin Feathers McGraw as statue unveiled

Independent20-02-2025

A 4ft-high bronze statue of evil penguin Feathers McGraw has been unveiled near to his arch enemies Wallace and Gromit.
Crowds gathered in Preston, Lancashire, to watch Nick Park, the creator of the popular animation film franchise, reveal the sculpture in his home city and then greet the new artwork with cheers… and then playful boos.
One onlooker shouted 'arrest that chicken' to laughter.
Feathers McGraw appeared in the Oscar-winning The Wrong Trousers and returned in a starring role in Vengeance Most Fowl, which premiered on BBC One on Christmas Day.
Long thought to be a chicken, Feathers was exposed as a penguin when Wallace and Gromit foiled his plan to rob a museum of a precious diamond.
Preston-born Park and the Mayor of Preston, Councillor Philip Crowe, performed the ceremony on Thursday as part of the opening of Animate, the city's new £45 million entertainment and leisure complex on the site of its former indoor market.
The silent criminal mastermind character stands outside Animate but ominously close to the existing Wallace and Gromit bronze statue bench at nearby Preston Markets, also opened by Park in September 2021.
Park said: 'As a proud Prestonian, I couldn't be more 'egg-cited' to see our infamous Feathers McGraw joining Wallace and Gromit in my hometown.
'I'm not sure how happy Wallace and Gromit will be though to have their arch nemesis clutching the limelight and a little too close for comfort.'
Animate features The Arc Cinema with eight screens and the 16-lane Hollywood Bowl bowling alley, along with various food outlets.
Councillor Matthew Brown, leader of Preston City Council, said: 'To have Nick Park officially opening our flagship regeneration scheme, Animate, is a genuine honour and landmark moment for the council and the city.
'In addition, the new Feathers McGraw statue is a fantastic complement to the Wallace and Gromit bench which has drawn so many visitors to Preston, its popularity has blown us away.'
Vengeance Most Fowl has been nominated in the best animated feature film category at the forthcoming Academy Awards.
Park's Aardman animation studio has previously won four Oscar s over the years.
The first win came for the 1989 stop-motion comedy Creature Comforts, while the second film starring Wallace and Gromit, The Wrong Trousers, picked up the best animated short film Oscar in 1994.
Wallace & Gromit: A Close Shave won the same award in 1996, and Wallace & Gromit: The Curse Of The Were-Rabbit won best animated feature in 2005.

BBC viewers say 'I gave it a try' as they 'switch off' Death Valley within minutes

BBC viewers say 'I gave it a try' as they 'switch off' Death Valley within minutes The third episode of Death Valley aired on BBC One on Sunday evening, and it was safe to say that viewers were far from impressed Death Valley: Official trailer Death Valley's third episode left some viewers "switching off" on Sunday night. The episode, which aired on Sunday (June 8), saw John Chapel (portrayed by Timothy Spall) and DS Janie Mallowan (Gwyneth Keyworth) investigating the premature death of a best man, reports the Express. However, it seemed to attract attention for all the wrong reasons. One disgruntled viewer took to social media to vent their frustration: "What on earth is this s*** #DeathValley. "No wonder everyone is talking about it... It's utter drivel and woke toboot. Refund the BBC if this is the best they can s**t out." Another chimed in, " I heard it was bad, but jeez, it's horrendously bad. The lead lady is so irritating, and the script is chronically unfunny. It's a new low for BBC Sunday night viewing, absolutely horrendous." Death Valley was swamped with complaints (Image: BBC ) Article continues below One viewer even admitted to turning off the programme, stating, "Caught up with #DeathValley on BBC1. I love stuff staring Timothy Spall but just had to turn off after a few minutes due to the awful co-star detective played by Gwyneth Keyworth shouting all the time. She must be one of the most annoying TV characters ever." A fourth viewer echoed these sentiments: "I'm on the third episode of "Death Valley" - I really gave it a try, but it really doesn't get on me. I can't stand the main characters, they are cringe... in general I really like those shows, but this I'll skip and that Ludwig will return soon." (sic) Someone else declared: "#DeathValley on BBC1 is one of the worst programmes I've ever sat through!". Despite the mixed reviews, Death Valley drew in nearly three million viewers on its debut (Image: BBC ) In contrast, some viewers expressed their enjoyment of the series, with one spectator stating: "I know a lot of people seem to enjoy slagging off #DeathValley, and I admit that when I saw the initial trailer, I thought it looked poor. "However, having binged the series the other day, I can quash my original reticence & say that I loved it. Daft, funny, cosy & Welsh." Another added: "Enjoying #DeathValley too. It's Sunday night viewing and I remember 'By the Sword Divided' and 'The Pallisers' so this is quite fun." Demi Moore told 'this is not ok' as she divides fans after rescuing ducklings

Oscar nominated actress Demi Moore was slammed by some fans for how she interacted with the three baby ducks she rescued, amid concern for the welfare of the animals Actress Demi Moore has divided fans after revealing she has rescued three baby ducks. The 62-year-old animal lover, who is said to have nine pet dogs, took to Instagram to share a cute snap with the ducklings. Tucking the baby mallards into her jacket, a smiling Demi shared they had already made friends with her Chihuahua Pilaf, who she often shares photos of. Her daughters and granddaughter were also spotted getting to know the ducklings in a series of pics posted to her social media account. ‌ The Substance star captioned the post: "Duck, duck… Pilaf! We rescued three orphaned baby mallard ducklings! With the help and guidance of my local vet we are working to nurture them until they are old enough to be reintroduced to their natural habitat. It has been a messy joy, but Pilaf is loving her new friends." ‌ Though some of her celebrity followers like Paris Hilton and Jennifer Garner commented with heart emojis and Tom Hanks wife Rita Wilson wrote "Oh my goodness! How sweet is this?" - not everybody agreed with it. READ MORE: Demi Moore and Bruce Willis' daughter Rumer, 36, defends taking baths with her sisters One follower wrote: "This is not ok. Wild mallards should be rehabbed by wildlife rehabber. Her vet should have known that. Sorry.. cute but imprinted…" Agreeing, another replied: "Correct. Handling these ducks is not a good rehab practice. They should NEVER be subjected to all that handling." A third person commented: "Yeah this is messed up, these ducks need to go to a wildlife rehab." A fourth said: "Just because a celebrity thinks its cute doesn't make it right." While a fifth asked: "What happened to mom! If they imprint to you - there is no way you should release them. That will work against them in the wild as they follow humans around. Talk to a wildlife rehab facility." But others leapt to Demi's defence, with one writing: "Those ducks will most likely live because of her. And all you can do is b***h and complain. Get a life and follow someone else." Another chimed in: "What if a rehab person is actually filming this before taking them away….what if this is being filmed at rehab facility….what if….. I would give a person benefit of doubt before criticizing [sic] or attacking them. Three little ducklings following a person. That is all that you can say with certainty." ‌ The Mirror has reached out to Demi's reps for further comment on this story. Demi is known for her love of animals and is often spotted with what seems to be her favourite dog Pilaf. The pint-sized pooch - said to be a similar size to a guinea pig - even accompanied her famous owner to a recent awards ceremony. ‌ Pilaf was seen walking the red carpet with Demi at the Film Independent Spirit Awards back in February. Movie star Demi has joked Pilaf's fame is now so big it's eclipsed her own. She said: "The truth is, I am her accessory." She has also appeared on Jimmy Fallon's chat show with Demi. Introducing Pilaf to the audience, Demi shared: "This is Pilaf, the little mouse. She is a pound and a half. She's the runt of her litter. She's a magical creature." Jimmy replied: "She is. I met her backstage and her tongue permanently hangs out." Demi replied: "It does. She lost the teeth that hold it in, but it's part of her charm. Demi admitted she also sleeps with her dogs - and that might be why she's currently single. She shared: "If anybody saw my nighttime routine, if it was filmed, they would really see how eccentric I am. "I have to prop pillows so the ones that are this size have the ability to get under the covers. I have two beds for the little ones so that they have the beds within the bed. Hence why I'm single!"
