2026 four-star wide receiver Jase Mathews announces commitment date

USA Today16-07-2025
2026 four star wide receiver Jase Mathews will make his commitment on August 8th.
All the attention this week is in Atlanta with SEC Media Days. The Auburn Tigers received some news on the 2026 recruiting front on Monday when 2026 four-star wide receiver Jase Mathews announced when he would make his commitment. Hayes Fawcett of Rivals posted that Mathews would make the announcement on August 8th. He recently named his top four teams with Auburn being on that list. The other teams in the final four are LSU, Texas A&M, and Ole Miss.
Mathews is from Leakesville, Mississippi where he attends Greene County High School. He is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 9 player in Mississippi and No. 27 nationally at wide receiver. Marcus Davis and Derrick Nix are both handling the recruitment of Mathews. Ole Miss is still the favorite to land Mathews according to Rivals. They are currently at 35.7% with Auburn following at 23.5%.
Mathews is the type of player who possesses the talent to make an impact on whichever team he decides to play for. As a junior, he caught 68 passes for 1,138 yards and 15 touchdowns. Showing that he is a great athlete, Thomas also plays basketball and runs track.
It has been well documented with the struggles Auburn has had in recruiting for the 2026 class. The Tigers are last in the SEC and only have nine commitments. Success in the regular season can change the Tigers' fortunes in recruiting. A commitment from Mathews could help bolster the class, and give the Tigers some much needed momentum.

LSU head coach Brian Kelly takes jabs, calls Clemson's Memorial Stadium 'Death Valley Jr.'

The buildup to Clemson football and LSU's primetime clash on August 30 continues to gain steam, and Tigers head coach Brian Kelly isn't shying away from the spotlight. Speaking Wednesday at the Baton Rouge Rotary Club, Kelly didn't miss the opportunity to take a swipe at Clemson's home turf. 'You need those [championship] traits when you're on the road [at Clemson]; when you're at Death Valley Junior,' Kelly said, reigniting the long-running rivalry over which program holds the true claim to the 'Death Valley' nickname. Kelly's comments came on the heels of what he said earlier this month at SEC Media Days, where he not only praised Clemson as a worthy opponent but explained how the season opener has been central to LSU's offseason preparation. 'It's also a program that is considered a premier program,' Kelly said. 'We got an incredible challenge that we are excited about and one that we are looking forward to.' Recently, Kelly revealed that Clemson's logo has become a daily presence inside LSU's football facility. 'We have made this a specific goal, meaning it is tangible for our guys. You go through our weight room, and we have a Clemson paw print on the bags that we hit every day. It is on every monitor in the building to go 1-0,' he said. Despite the mutual respect he expressed toward Dabo Swinney and Clemson's consistency, Kelly still couldn't help but joke, 'We still think we are THE DEATH VALLEY. They can use the name, too. We are letting them borrow it.' As for his own squad, Kelly is confident in what LSU will put on the field this fall. 'On paper, this is the best roster we will put out there since I have been here,' he said Wednesday. 'It's not just about names. It's about individuals, through the transfer portal process, to win a championship for LSU. They're not here for any other reason.' LSU leads the all-time series 3-1, including a memorable win in the 2019 national championship. Clemson, however, will have home-field advantage this time — in its own version of Death Valley. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC, with playoff hopes, conference pride, and bragging rights all on the line. Former Auburn head coach brings a championship mindset to Florida State

FSU head coach Mike Norvell hopes that Gus Malzahn will play a vital role in the Seminoles making a run at the College Football Playoff. Former Auburn football head coach Gus Malzahn considered retiring from the game during the offseason, but has found a new home in Tallahassee, Florida instead. Malzahn was hired by Mike Norvell and Florida State last December after spending the last four seasons as the head coach of UCF, where he won 28 games and led the Knights to three bowl games. However, following a disappointing 4-8 year in 2024, Malzahn jumped at an opportunity to become an offensive coordinator again, a position where he thrived for many seasons. Norvell spoke on the Malzahn hire during his time at ACC kickoff this week by saying that Malzahn's championship mindset could be a major factor in the Seminoles returning to the College Football Playoff discussion. "I mean, having the opportunity to have Coach Malzahn come and be a part of our staff, it was special. It's somebody that I've had a 20-year relationship with. All the respect in the world for the man, just the coach. He's somebody that infuses confidence in everybody around him because he knows what he wants to do. He knows what he wants it to look like. It's the belief that he's able to pour into others, for what it takes on that journey. You talk about the perspective; he does. He's been a very successful head football coach. The last time he was an offensive coordinator he did win a National Championship. To make the choice and decision he made to come to Florida State, I mean, that is the purpose. That is the reason." Malzahn joined the college ranks as an offensive coordinator at Arkansas in 2006, and has held the role at four different programs. His most success came at Auburn, both as a coordinator and a head coach. He was the offensive mastermind behind the 2010 National Championship team that ranked No. 7 in overall yards with 499.2 yards per game, and produced the Heisman Trophy winner in Cam Newton. Malzahn led the Tigers to the 2013 BCS National Championship Game in his first season as the Tigers' head coach, a season that saw Auburn rank No. 1 in rushing with 328.4 yards per game. Another notable season for Malzahn at Auburn was the 2017 season, where he led Auburn to the SEC Western Division championship and scored wins over Georgia and Alabama when the teams were No. 1. Norvell and the Seminoles will look to Malzahn to bring his offensive expertise to Tallahassee as they look to return to the College Football Playoff for the first time since 2015. What are LSU football's chances of landing five-star offensive lineman Darius Gray?

LSU football is trending towards a commitment from one of the 2026 cycle's best offensive linemen. Per Rivals' Prediction Machine, five-star Darius Gray has a 51.1% chance to land with the Tigers. South Carolina trails with a 32.5% chance. Gray's top five also includes Clemson, Tennessee, and Ohio State. Should Gray choose LSU, he would be the fifth five-star commitment and the fifth offensive lineman in the Tigers' class. It currently ranks fifth in the SEC and eighth nationally in Rivals' Industry Rankings. 247Sports is the highest on Gray. The outlet has him as the best player out of Virginia and at his position as well as No. 16 overall. Rivals slots him at No. 22 overall and No. 2 from his home state. LSU was favorited to land the Richmond, VA native for multiple weeks but head coach Brian Kelly and his staff must continue making him a priority. He isn't expected to commit before the start of his senior season at St. Christopher's School.
