Euro 2025: England great Lucy Bronze had fractured tibia through entire title-winning tournament
Bronze revealed the extent of her leg injury after playing through the first period of extra time in England's eventual win on penalties over Spain. The game was tied 1-1 before England retained its title, winning the shootout 3-1.
'I'll do anything to play for England, I've always said that,' said the 33-year-old great, who knew of the injury after a May 30 game against Portugal in the Nations League.
'I knew I was in a lot of pain at the end of the season. All the England players knew,' Bronze said of the secret issue.
Bronze was praised for her inspiring 'crazy mentality' by England coach Sarina Wiegman.

NEW YORK (AP) — Jameis Winston is listed as the backup quarterback and Jaxson Dart the third-stringer on the New York Giants' first unofficial depth chart released Tuesday ahead of their preseason opener this weekend. Winston, a 31-year-old veteran, and Dart, the rookie first-round pick and perceived QB of the future, have been alternating snaps with the second- and third-team offensive groups throughout training camp after Russell Wilson with the projected starters. Coach Brian Daboll early this week has so far declined to reveal his plan as to who might play in the first exhibition game Saturday at the Buffalo Bills. 'We're focused on us right now,' Daboll said Tuesday on a video call with reporters. 'We'll get to Buffalo later in the week. We'll talk about it as a coaching staff and do what we think is best.' Injuries are part of the picture. Rookies Cam Skattebo and Beaux Collins have been sidelined from full team practice drills, and standout left tackle Andrew Thomas remains on the physically unable to perform list as he works his way back from October surgery for a Lisfranc injury in his right foot. Daboll said the thinking varies for every NFL team and does not believe there's one correct formula. 'Is it a series, is it two series is it a half?' Daboll said. 'There's no substitute for playing the game. You have to tackle. You don't do a whole lot (in practice). Some people do some live tackling, but it's not much. There's no substitute for a quarterback when he knows he can get hit. There's no substitute for an offensive guard cleaning the pocket or being very physical in the run game in gang tackling. Collier is sidelined with a sprained right ankle and Stewart has a bone bruise in her right knee. The two teams played an epic WNBA Finals last season, although both sides have downplayed it being a rivalry just yet. 'It's a rivalry because of what happened in the Finals last year and I think it's good that it has people talking,' Liberty coach Sandy Brondello said. 'We have passionate fans. We have people talking about our league and that's a good thing.' Right now only four games separate second-place New York (18-10) from eighth place Golden State (14-14) with a month left in the season. 'The timing of that week is critical, because in August you start to really make that playoff push,' WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert said back when the Rivals Week was announced. 'So it would be great to have those matchups during that period to drive that playoff push into September and crown a champion in October.' Power poll rankings Minnesota remained the No. 1 team in the poll with Atlanta and New York behind the Lynx. Riding a five-game winning streak, Indiana moved up to fourth. Phoenix and Seattle followed the Fever. Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Golden State were the next three. Washington, Dallas, Connecticut and Chicago rounded out the poll. It's the first time since Week 6 that the Sun aren't at the bottom of the poll. Ratings boon Las Vegas' blowout loss to Minnesota on Saturday drew an average viewership of 1.6 million fans, peaking at 2 million. As a whole, games on ABC are up 20% from the regular season last year on the network. Player of the week Collier of Minnesota was the AP player of the week after averaging 24 points, six rebounds and 3.5 assists to help the Lynx win both their games last week. Other players receiving votes included Allisha Gray of Atlanta, Natasha Howard of Indiana and Sabrina Ionescu of New York. Game of the week Minnesota at New York, Sunday.
