Sarina Wiegman: England have ‘protocols in place' to deal with Switzerland heat at Euro 2025
Heat warnings are in place for the beginning of the tournament, with temperatures in Switzerland forecasted to rise to as high as 34C (93F).

Weigman said the Lionesses had become accustomed to dealing with the high temperatures given England was in the middle of a heatwave before the team departed for Switzerland.
'Of course we have protocols in place, strategies, which players who have been around longer are familiar with that because they've played in circumstances like this — for other players, they get into it for the first time,' Wiegman told reporters on Wednesday.
'We could already practise it in the first week of our training camp because in England it was really hot too, so we have these cold vests, ice baths, ice drinks they can drink, before training sessions (and) they could also cool down a bit, get your temperature a little bit lower with Slush Puppies.
'We have ice cold towels so at rest moments in the training sessions they get the towels if they want. So we make sure we are hydrated. Take another rest, don't go in and out all the time, that is for recovery, and do those things to keep your body temperature low.'

The team also have access to cryotherapy — sometimes referred to as 'cold therapy' — at their base in Zurich.
Substitutes were key throughout England's Euro 2022 success, with Alessia Russo often making an impact from the bench, while Ella Toone and Chloe Kelly both scored in the victory over Germany in the final after being introduced in the second half.
Wiegman said impacting the game would remain the primary reason for her substitutions at Euro 2025, not managing the conditions.
'What we do now is get prepared for Saturday, for France and we're going to do everything to win that game,' she added. 'When we sub we do it because it's necessary to change the game or to sub someone who gave everything that needs to go out, I will not think of managing the heat at that point. After that game, we recover and then we come together as a team with the medical, technical, how does everyone come out of this game and then we move forward to the next game against the Netherlands.'

England trained at midday on Wednesday, with the temperature in Zurich around 29C (84F), but the Lionesses' group stage fixtures take place later in the day, with their opener against France kicking off at 9pm local time, before they face the Netherlands at 6pm, and Wales again at 9pm.
'We did (train at close to peak heat) today, I think it's cooling down over the next couple of days,' Wiegman added. 'We also know that we play (at) 9 o'clock, six o clock, nine o' clock in the group stage, so we don't expect it to be this hot. Today we didn't change the schedule.'
England begin their Euro 2025 campaign against France on Saturday.

Why Liverpool signed Darwin Nunez over Alexander Isak 'as Reds plot huge new bid for Newcastle star'
Amid transfer speculation linking Liverpool with Alexander Isak, the reason behind the Reds' decision to sign Darwin Nunez over the Newcastle star in 2022 has been revealed. Jurgen Klopp's side were linked with both men that summer but eventually opted for Nunez, signing the striker from Benfica for a then-club record fee, leaving Newcastle free to break their own transfer record by bringing Isak from Real Sociedad to St James' Park for a similar price. But while Nunez's progress has stalled somewhat in the seasons since then, leading to repeated rumours of a cut-price move away from Anfield this summer, Isak has grown into one of the Premier League's best strikers. Isak is now thought to be on Liverpool's summer wish list as Arne Slot looks to make a new world-class centre forward the latest addition to his Premier League-winning squad. Given the two strikers' contrasting fortunes, particularly last season when Isak's league goals tally of 23 was more than quadruple that of Nunez, Liverpool's detractors may view the decision to sign the streaky Uruguayan over his Swedish counterpart as a mistake. In an interview with the Financial Times, former Liverpool director of research Ian Graham has suggested it was then-Reds manager Klopp who made the call to pursue Nunez over Isak thanks to the German manager gaining increasing power over transfer decisions. 'Jurgen created a lot of success for the club, so it's understandable why it moved in that direction,' Graham said. 'In 2022, he signed Darwin Nunez instead of Alexander Isak. 'Both players, if you look at top young centre-forwards in Europe, they would be number one and two (at the time), or two and three but [Erling] Haaland was going to [Manchester] City and out of our price range. Jurgen preferred Nunez.' The ex-Liverpool staffer, who between 2012 and 2023 worked to implement data analysis into the club's transfer policy, continued: 'It would be very churlish of me to say, 'It's terrible that Jurgen had his choice', when in the past Jurgen had been persuaded by me and my colleagues of a different choice. And it was still the case that we signed good players - in Nunez's case, one of the best young strikers in Europe.' Graham, now chief executive of sports advisory firm Ludonautics, also claimed that Klopp was persuaded by his recruitment team to sign Mohamed Salah from Roma instead of Borussia Dortmund's Julian Brandt in the summer of 2017. 'I'm happy to talk about my colleagues persuading Jurgen [in 2017] that Mo Salah was the player to buy instead of Julian Brandt,' he added. That momentous move to acquire Salah's services would, of course, shape much of Liverpool's success in the years that followed. Discussing the influence of managers in club transfers, Graham said he believes the role of 'coach as dictator' is specific to England and is also 'something that is dying off'.

Darwin Nunez's could STAY after Liverpool announce new arrival
Everyone thinks Darwin Nunez is off this summer, but perhaps his Liverpool career might be saved. Look the reality is that the Reds want to sell the Uruguayan. He just hasn't got going in a Liverpool shirt and the chances are he never will. Advertisement Arne Slot doesn't particularly seem to rate him and his erratic behaviour on and off the pitch hasn't helped things with the Dutchman. Nunez is a loose wire. He's unpredictable, sometimes in the very best and sometimes in the very worst possible ways. But somewhere deep within him, hides a phenomenal talent. If he can just harness that potential, Liverpool know they have a fantastic player on their hands. Someone who could dominate defenders at ease. Someone who could flourish in this Liverpool system under Slot - especially with the arrival of Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong. Advertisement And in order to do that Liverpool might have just brought in someone who could save his career. Liverpool announced the arrival of goalkeeping coach Xavi Valero. The club released an official post on their website, welcoming the Spaniard's return to Anfield after 15 years. At first glance it may not be immediately obvious why Valero would be the man to save Nunez's career. After all, he's a goalkeeping coach. How could a goalkeeping coach help a striker? Well, Valero is a rather unorthodox goalkeeping coach. He believes goalkeeping sessions should be integrated with outfield players and he is often helping out strikers as well when he does his opposition analysis. Advertisement In fact, when he was last at the club, Fernando Torres credited him for his performances and goals. Speaking in 2008 as per the Daily Mirror, Torres said: "We've a Spanish goalkeeping coach and he has been a genius at telling me every week exactly what kind of task lies in front of me in the following match. Nobody has ever worked with me like this before. It's outstanding. "Basically, I know days before the next game exactly the best way to finish a chance against the keeper I'm about to face. Xavi Valero tells me precisely what each keeper tends to do – stay big, go down early, if they have a preferred side they try to push you to. It's vital information. I've refined the way I take chances as a result." Ten years after that interview, Valero addressed Torres' comments in an interview with ESPN: Advertisement "Because we're training with goalkeepers and we always know how goalkeepers are going to react, I like to let the goalkeepers know how the other team is going to attack them, how they're going to attack our goalkeepers," Valero said. "Sometimes there's some relevant information for the strikers to know about the goalkeeper. With Fernando, and other players at different teams, I always tried to give him some tips. If there's any weak point we can exploit, we tried it. It's good and sometimes helps the striker to have that information when it comes to the very last moment of the game or finishing in one-versus-one [situations]. "We will try to do it [now], but not all the 'keepers have weak points. If you find one then you have to exploit it." Having someone like that giving this kind of information to Nunez before games could be the confidence booster the Uruguayan needs. Valero's work clearly paid off with Torres, and the fact that he is Spanish meaning he can converse with Nunez will be a massive benefit as well.
